Posted on July 09, 2009
This is my 637th post at Legally Blonde Ambition. I've been here for awhile- my archives tell me I started on February 27, 2007. That is a lot of words, a lot of milestones & a lot of rambling. I've grown up since then, my life has changed and evolved...

End Scene

Posted on July 08, 2009
This evening BISMOW was late at work & I had invited my close male friend over. By "close" of course I mean in a platonic way - he is good friends with BISMOW and he and I have been remiss of a good, long chat. We were able to talk about many things before parting ways (although I realized we sat rather formally at the opposite ends of my long table) but the funniest part was at the beginning of the evening...

I Ain't Seen Sunshine Since I Don't Know When

Posted on July 06, 2009
Today was one of those days. The day where I wasn't that busy, where the office was eerily quiet in a post-holiday-weekend kind of way and I felt it. I felt this sad ache, where I missed the buzz of litigation. I missed the (crazy) client phone calls, the buzz in the office, the scanning of the schedule to make sure that I'd taken care of what needed to be done for the next court call, the next motion argument, the next trial...

A 4th of July Message From Baby Z

Posted on July 05, 2009
Baby Z is perplexed as to why lawyers freak out so much about things like "bar exams" and "character and fitness" and "long handwritten exams on constitutional law." He thinks lawyers should relax a little bit more. He thinks certain lawyers should visit him more but he isn't pointing fingers...

4th Of July For Lawyers

Posted on July 04, 2009
For most the country the fourth of July means barbeque's and hotdogs and fireworks and sunburns. For the unlucky few taking the bar exam, it is The Weekend. The Weekend that you have to stop screwing around (if you haven't been taking it all that seriously) or the weekend that you have your nervous breakdown (because you've been taking it way too seriously) and suddenly it hits you...

Back Again

Posted on July 01, 2009
I apologize profusely for the long, long hiatus from the blog. Somehow The Move morphed into THE MOVE and my computer was tucked away and then when I found it (Surprise!!) I had no home internet. That situation was remedied moments ago and now I have super crazy oh my goodness fast internet that takes my breath away...

A Bar-Related Giveaway!

Posted on June 21, 2009
Yes, it is true. I'm holding my very own, very first blog give-away. Now this give-away might not be exciting for all of you, but for those of you studying for the bar (or in future summers) this might be just what you need. I have, in my possession, one pack of the PMBR lecture CD's...

Moving On

Posted on June 17, 2009
At the rate we are moving we should be into the new place by Christmas. Which is difficult considering I need to schedule a walk through and key hand over on my old apartment for sometime next week. A total conundrum I tell you. I suppose we could move faster but with the elevator not being legal to use (read: elevator works but doesn't have an emergency call button up & running and therefore it is about a $600 fine for using it) and the massive amount of books both BISMOW and I own, we keep bringing over winter clothes and random assortments of oven mitts as though somehow, miraculously, the books will lug themselves up the stairs...

New Digs

Posted on June 15, 2009
In an effort to not talk about the fact that I spent all day yesterday not eating (doctors orders) and how I subsequently spent my morning under sedation having lots of photos taken of my insides I'm instead going to talk about my shiny new house we started paying for today...

Fat Something

Posted on June 12, 2009
Right. Fat Baby Friday. I know, I know. Unfortunately my evil step-mother (just kidding, my parents have been happily married for 30 years) has not sent me any photos of my adorable little guy and neither has the sibling unit/parent of my adorable little guy and that leaves me Fat Baby Friday photo-less...

Things I Learned

Posted on June 11, 2009
If you are on the phone chatting while climbing down from a step ladder, stepping backwards with all your weight and stepping on the 2" edge of a Le Creuset cast iron baking dish with the arch of your foot is an incredibly painful experience. One that will cause you to painfully moan/moo like a cow whilst on the phone...

Did Anyone Ask Your Opinion?

Posted on June 10, 2009
Behold, my Save-The-Dates: Of course mine don't look exactly like that because I changed the font, did thermography instead of flat print, only used chocolate brown ink, changed the envelope liner to chocolate brown, put in my own information, took out the palm tree, added a fleur-de-lis on the 3rd page, and did not write a cutesy note to my guests...

The Bar Exam Continued: Daisy's Strategy

Posted on June 09, 2009
I wish I'd followed all of my own advice when I took the bar exam. I took more of a foolish "OHMYGOODNESSI'MNEVERGOINGTOPASS" approach that led to a lot of compulsive outlining, reading & pacing in my living room and eating far too many cupcakes. Live and learn, eh? Some things though I think I did a great job on...

The Bar Exam: Revisited

Posted on June 04, 2009
I don't know if I'm mentally strong enough to go back to The Bar Exam (Also known as The Plague, The Badness, The Horrible Thing of Which We Don't Speak, It Which Must Not Be Named, and also, why is it named after a magical location that serves elixers of the Gods that you can no longer frequent due to studying for it?) but I'm going to try...

If Wishes Were Horses

Posted on June 03, 2009
BISMOW & I bought a lottery ticket this past weekend. After a stroke of good luck we decided to push that luck a little further and we purchased a ticket. We had a fun time discussing what we would do- and what we wouldn't do- with such a sudden windfall of money...

Roger, Roger

Posted on June 02, 2009
I'm going to divert from the usual fodder here and turn to a recent event I'm sure you've heard about- the missing Air France plane that is presumed to be in pieces in the Atlantic Ocean. Some of you might know this but my Dad, Papa Duke is what we call an "experienced aviator...

Library

Posted on June 01, 2009
Awhile ago we had a book club here at Legally Blonde Ambition. It was fun. We read neat books! Everyone (seemed) to enjoy it. And then, like many good intentions, it fell by the wayside. I'd love to get it going again but I realize that perhaps I should start slowly...

In The Next 365 Days

Posted on May 31, 2009
- I'm going to become Mrs. Bismow and Bismow will become The Hubs - I'm going to have my first "real" house (with BISMOW) with a guest bedroom - I'm going to let the summer bar exam go by without any stress - I'm going to make it to New Orleans & show BISMOW my old haunts - I'm not going to spend the summer searching for a job- I'm going to celebrate my nephew's first Christmas & first birthday - I'm going to attend five weddings of family & friends - I'm going to watch some of my best friends start their medical residencies - I'm going to go to Los Angeles & visit Overflowing Brain & Dr...

FBF, A Year In Review

Posted on May 29, 2009
Baby Z wants to help me go over what's happened in the past year.... he's pretty excited about Titi Daisy's upcoming birthday, even if he is too young to partake in the cake & champagne. Needless to say 25 was a big year. In addition to be that quarter of a century marker, it was kicked off by my first day of Saturday Bar/Bri- no rest for the weary I suppose...

We Interrupt This Program For a Comment

Posted on May 28, 2009
Oh was I ever amused & tickled by your various comments on my last post. In fact, I'm often tickled & amused by your comments- so much so that I often want to reply back. But then I'm not sure...should I comment in the comments beneath yours? Or are you like me and often don't go back and scroll through comments on another persons blog because, I don't know, you have a life? Or should I edit the post to add a "post script" or is it easier to just start the NEXT post out with comments on the comments...

Going To The Chapel

Posted on May 27, 2009
I know some of you are not all that interested in wedding updates. Those "some of you" are same ones who roll your eyes when I post yet ANOTHER photo of Baby Z. I'm sorry but who can resist this kind of striped cuteness: But alas this isn't a Baby Z post but a wedding post...

Fat (Baby) Tuesday

Posted on May 26, 2009
To make up for my lack of Baby Z photos last Friday I'll give you some today on an unofficial Fat (Baby) Tuesday. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the bloggers you'd like to meet and y'all even introduced me to some bloggers I'd never stumbled across...

Memorial Day Monday

Posted on May 25, 2009
"Four score & seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty & dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure...

Oh Hi. Is This Thing On?

Posted on May 21, 2009
It is almost Memorial Day Weekend, it is almost my birthday, Chicago (finally!) got warm and um, yeah. BISMOW & I sign the lease on our fabulous shiny new house next week. Less than 5 months to my wedding. The Red Wings lead the Blackhawks 2-0 in the Western Conference Finals...

Tulane University: The Katrina Class

Posted on May 19, 2009
My first week at Tulane was the week of September 11, 2001.My first week of law school was Hurricane Katrina in 2005.Needless to say I'm pretty awesome at attending the first few weeks of classes in a zombie-like state. It wasn't awesome to get this email from the Dean my first week of law school: In reviewing the College of Law records we determined that you eitherattended college in the region affected by Hurricane Katrina or may havelived in that area and/or have family that lived in that area...

Friday In Photos

Posted on May 15, 2009
I have been informed my brother (along with the Namby Pamby) is very worried about having an obese child and is already researching homemade baby foods & putting the kabosh on sugary snacks. (Seeing as how Baby Z is only 3 months & exclusively on a dairy-diet old I keep telling him he needn't think about this for a few more months at least...

A Few of My Favorite Things

Posted on May 13, 2009
BISMOW & I got a thumbs up/approval on our very own first home together. Of course anything could happen between our signature on the paper and a set of keys, but so far it is looking good. The new place has 1300 square feet of goodness and of course as a woman my mind has slipped to home decor...

Exile

Posted on May 12, 2009
Have you ever walked away from work with a sinking feeling that you are the weakest link? That people like you but that secretly you are creating more work for everyone? That truth be told they are not sure how happy they that you are on the team? Today I was scheduled to work from home which was supposed to be glorious- productive, in my comfy clothes & a few extra minutes of sleep before hitting the deck...

I Heart Hockey

Posted on May 11, 2009
Tonight I'm going to the Blackhawks game with my one & only Dysfunction Junction (hereinafter DJ). I won't lie, my heart always lies with the Detroit Red Wings but when I need a second team to love it is the Chicago Blackhawks. Please don't remind me they might be playing for the Western Conference Championship because the thought of it makes me stick my fingers in my ears, close my eyes and go "neeener neeeener neeeener I can't heeeaaar you" while twirling in circles...

Things You Never Knew You Never Knew

Posted on May 10, 2009
I haven't over-shared with The Internet People in a long time so I figured I could scrape up some fun-facts and give you a glimpse into my inner psyche. Or my inner crazy. However you label such things. 1. I have pudgy fingers. I have tiny little hands with pudgy fingers...

My Friend. She Has a Blog!

Posted on May 07, 2009
A friend of mine, we'll call her Lindsey, has a new blog.  Actually we can call her Lindsey because unlike ahem, some of us she isn't anonymous. Whatever I say!  Whatever. Don't come crying to me asking me to pick up the pieces of your hacked up body after some crazy stalker finds you and hunts you down...

Blame It On That Woman

Posted on May 06, 2009
Because Jillian Michaels is evil and she won't let me "phone in" my work-out, I'm phoning in this blog post. I'm sorry guys. Don't take it personally. That and there is some sort of ridiculous rain storm with lightening outside and I had a simultaneous thought of "Hmm I should probably unplug my computer" followed by "And perhaps take my left foot off the metal trashcan, my right foot off the metal doorknob & the possibly soon to be fried laptop off my (slightly) sweaty lap...

I Can Barely Move (But I'm Ready to Move)

Posted on May 05, 2009
Let me just say that any sort of movement requiring muscle is painful for me right now. I CAN FEEEELLLLLL THE BURN. And so I'm just popping in to say that perhaps, maybe, I'm not sure but fingers crossed, we found a fabulous place to live. That said it has some hoops to jump through (Hoop # 1: Convincing BISMOW we must have it right now) and really, until my check is cashed, I've signed on the dotted line & have a set of keys in my hand, I'm not holding my breath...

Working On My Fitness

Posted on May 04, 2009
Apparently when you get married you have to wear the least flattering color ever in front of your family and friends. With netting sticking out of your head & bare arms.Who knew? And while I'm by no means gigantic or Titanic-sized, the last year of law school and the bar exam were killer on my health & body...

Dear Namby Pamby, Attorney-At-Scum

Posted on May 01, 2009
Dear Namby Pamby, Attorney-At-Scum: We present you with Fat Baby Friday. Ms. Duke has received your cease & desist letter and most politely and charmingly informs you to "buzz off" followed by a hair flip. After the flip she then says in a nice drawl, "We'll see you in court" ...

Stuck In A Rut

Posted on April 30, 2009
This is it guys. I'm not even married yet and I'm stuck in a "What's for dinner?" rut. We have our go-to recipes: healthy Mexican, homemade pasta sauce, red beans & rice, pork tenderloin & grilled chicken. The meat dishes are served with steamed or sauteed veggies & sweet potato something (baked...

Safety First

Posted on April 28, 2009
(Why yes I did notice a cease & desist letter from the one & only Mr. Namby Pamby Attorney At Law, and yes, I'll be responding shortly. Muahahaha. ) A few weeks ago I suggested a genius blog-tweet-meet up. This of course was a brilliant idea that would blossom life long friendships & rainbows and butterflies...

The Value of Time. And Space.

Posted on April 27, 2009
With all of the traveling & parents in town & new job starting some things slipped by the wayside. One such thing was laundry. This weekend, BISMOW and I found ourselves staring at a combined 6ish loads of laundry. We resigned ourselves to an evening of spaghetti, Food Network & laundry and slowly hauled all of it down to the community laundry room in my building...

Fat Baby Friday....24 Hours Late

Posted on April 25, 2009
I apologize for the chirping crickets around these parts. I appreciate all your advice & will keep you updated on the Daycare That Holds The Children of Satan. I've also been playing around with the time I leave for work so as to get out earlier thus avoiding the traffic-y (is that a word?) drive home and my schedule has been a wee bit crazy as a result...

This Means War

Posted on April 21, 2009
I live on a small, one way residential street. Like everywhere else in the City of Chicago, parking is at a premium. People will rip bumpers off their car to beat another into a spot. There is a motto around here and it goes something like "Learn to parallel park or get out of my way b*tch"...

Delete!

Posted on April 20, 2009
First, I would like to  promise Anonymous that I did not delete your comment! Mostly because when I switched back to the blogger-comment platform (from Haloscan) I forgot how to delete comments. I don't even know if I can delete comments. I have however noticed some wonky things going on with my comments (like readers getting messages saying they can't comment on my blog which is most certainly not true) so I wouldn't be surprised if The Internet ate your comment for dinner...

Weekend Wrap-Up

Posted on April 19, 2009
My parents have been in town and the weather has oscillated between glorious and horrific and all in all we've had a lovely time. My Mother & I ordered Save-The-Date's for the wedding while the men-folk (BISMOW & Papa Duke) spent some time at the boat yard doing who knows what with copper paint & wax & sails...

Sometimes Inspiration Hits

Posted on April 15, 2009
Often when you write a post you think to yourself, "Self- this post is brilliant! Those readers will come out of the woodwork!" Then of course you get crickets chirping. Nada. Other times you write a post about LIFE and IMPORTANT STUFF and in the middle of it you mention you like pudding and suddenly you get all these comments about pudding and you think...

Cheezburger

Posted on April 14, 2009
Today on Twitter the Yat Pundit and myself discussed the nation's best burger. He and I heartily agreed on the burger that falls in second place - Port of Call in New Orleans...but we also heartily disagreed on the burger that falls in first place. My vote? Easy, a double-double animal style from In-N-Out (tragically it is only found on the West Coast), but the Yat's vote was for a delectable bite from Bud's Broiler (also in New Orleans)...

The One Where I'm Stabby & Angry & Then I Cease to Breathe

Posted on April 13, 2009
(Oh yeah. Before we get going, the first day at work was fine. Rainbows & unicorns.) Before I left for Utah whenever I went out there about a week ago, Bank of America charged me an overdraft fee that I disagreed with vehemently. Irate I went into a banking location & set up overdraft protection that was hooked to my meager savings account...

Etiquette

Posted on April 10, 2009
For the first time since the big engagement, BISMOW & I are traveling back to his old stomping ground in Michigan. We are staying at his parents and while they are dear, dear people his Mother has a padded/cushioned toilet seat and that is all I have to say about that...

Um. What?

Posted on April 09, 2009
Ahem. Dear readers. My last post was for charity. And all it required was a comment. (Namby Pamby? Grace? Artful Blogger? I'm looking at you.) So I'm now I'm just going to not post until I get some more comments. Not because I'm a comment-whore but because it is for charity and it is coming out of my pocket...

What Goes Around Comes Around

Posted on April 09, 2009
Wow. I gave y'all some time & to say that I'm overwhelmed with both your charities and the help we are giving would be an understatement. The votes were fairly close & I'm going to round up and give both The Liz Logelin Foundation and The Anti-Cruelty Society $25 donations...

For A Good Cause

Posted on April 07, 2009
I've always been a big fan of supporting charities. Certainly there are many out there, and we all probably have one or two or five that hit close to home. I'd much rather write a check to a charity than to the government or my electric company, and I try to remember to give a bit each year...

Learning Curve

Posted on April 06, 2009
Things I Learned While On Vacation - Finding the coffee section in a grocery store in Utah is very very difficult. Mostly because the coffee section in a Utah grocery store is about the same size as the Ethiopian food section in your grocery store.- Finding the wine section of the grocery store in Utah is downright impossible...

Ohh-La-La

Posted on April 01, 2009
I'm home-ward bound! Excited for April (the new job and of course the Month of the Alleged Lady, followed closely by none-other than the MOD or Month of Daisy) and hoping that upon my return Chicago has finally warmed up. And I shall close with a recipe for some of the simplest yet tastiest barbecue sauce you have ever had...

I Should Have Listened To The Internet People

Posted on March 31, 2009
Today I heard back from the company I interviewed with last week. I was nervous when their number popped up on my caller id as I knew they had interviewed quite a few candidates after me. I was pretty sure I was one of the least qualified candidates who interviewed, at least on the number of years practicing...

Hollywood

Posted on March 31, 2009
I fully admit that at least half of the movies on your "must see" or "favorite" list I haven't seen. Even if you roll your eyes and deem it a classic and tell me how you've watched it 100,000 times, every single weekend in college, anytime it comes on television you stop and must...

Minding Our Pennies

Posted on March 30, 2009
I think this has been a topic of discussion around these parts before, but with today's economy it never hurts to come back to it....... the topic being what we do to save money. As my unemployment drags on, I find myself cutting out more things (no more pedicures! goodbye to delivery food!) and looking for more ways to make a dollar last...

In The Nick of Time

Posted on March 28, 2009
Fat Baby Friday!! Someone found their hands this week...way to go Baby Z! And then he quietly modeled his latest pair of pants that come with a little monkey in the pocket. If only grown-up clothes were so cool.

Color Blind

Posted on March 27, 2009
A recent conversation bewteen myself and my Crazypants Grandma: Daisy: So Grandma, I wanted to let you know that for the wedding, most people are going to wear fall colors. Mom said you wanted to wear something that would like nice in the family pictures...

Letters

Posted on March 26, 2009
Last night and today I worked on forms, paperwork and letters regarding my employment and money or lack thereof. I am trying to see if I am eligible for some assistance with some old medical bills in addition to deferring my loans because right now I am unable to make the payments...

Like A Bloodhound

Posted on March 25, 2009
Among other traits, I have an incredibly keen sense of smell. Hearing, pffft I'll probably be deaf by the time I am 50- but smell? I can smell just about anything. If BISMOW is cooking I can tell what brand of hot sauce he is using from the other room...

And Then I Cried

Posted on March 23, 2009
I hope everyone had a lovely first weekend of Spring! Mine was certainly busy busy busy- so busy in fact that I forgot about a photo for Fat Baby Friday. Have no fear ~ and adorable photo of Baby Z arrived in my in-box along with another extra special delivery...

This That & The Other

Posted on March 19, 2009
First thing first, Dr. Slappy (husband of Katie at Overflowing Brain) got his residency match today and they are happily moving back to Los Angeles! In the same vein, two of my closest friends from college matched together at the same hospital (and residency program) in New Orleans, which makes them and their friends very very happy...

Stolen Lines # 3

Posted on March 18, 2009
There's something that I've been thinking about and wondering about and I'm very curious: am I the only one who knows?* A "kosher" dill pickle is not kosher in the sense that it has been prepared under rabbinical supervision, which would ensure that no non-kosher ingredients were used, and that no utensil in contact with the pickles had ever been in contact with food that was not kosher...

There Isn't Much To Say

Posted on March 17, 2009
Other than the fact that I really, really need to find a job. I'm not going to bore you with details or whining or my current state of freaking out, but seriously. I need a job. I'm willing to do the rain-dance. Or the job-dance. Or the what-have you dance...

This Post Was Way Cooler In My Head

Posted on March 16, 2009
The part of blogging that I didn't realize was part of blogging until I started blogging was that you look at things in your life as blog fodder. I find myself constantly rating situations, parties, conversations in many ways. BISMOW being excited not about the great deal on our honeymoon but instead the king sized bed? Ehhh, mildly funny...

Pizza Pizza!

Posted on March 15, 2009
I love home-made pizza. We made it a lot growing up, and my Mother would split the pizza into quarters to "decorate" as we pleased. Her quarter was piled high with sauteed veggies and the dreaded olive (one of which always hid under the cheese and sneaked over to my quarter) my Dad was a pepperoni and ham guy, Bubba was solely pepperoni and I always did extra cheese with one pepperoni in the middle...

The Power of The Internet People

Posted on March 12, 2009
So I know I'm pretty lucky over here with my super-supportive fabulous readers. You all supported me during The Studying Of The Bar Exam and then cheered when I passed said bar exam. You were excited when I got my job and indignant when I was laid off...

A Play, In One Act

Posted on March 11, 2009
It is a unseasonably warm March night in Chicago, albeit a rainy one. The scene unfolds in a small vintage apartment with cheery hardwood floors & a young couple. The gentlemen watches ESPN. The lady is seen in the kitchen. (Surrounded by a blender, a food processor, cookie sheets, an Oktoberfest mug from Munich and various other small appliances, she searches, frantically...

Titi Daisy & Other Tidbits

Posted on March 10, 2009
Last night after about 4 hours of delay I finally made it home. And then waited 30 minutes for the bags to even be assigned to a carousel much less start coming out. It was a late night indeed. But! I am home and discovered that BISMOW cleared out my fridge and pantry so today I will buy groceries and roast a chicken as an "I'm sorry" for just spiriting away so quickly...

Ranting. Perhaps Some Raving.

Posted on March 09, 2009
Rant # 1: I have been sitting in the Salt Lake City airport terminal for three hours. I have at least another hour to go. And then a three hour flight to Chicago, where BISMOW (who I miss very much and it is only because of this that I'm leaving my adorable nephew) is picking me up...

Technology Blues

Posted on March 07, 2009
My parents have been living in the house they built for almost a year now. It is a lovely house. It has lovely views. It is filled with extras & features that I dream about. The steam shower in the master suite? Divine. The super-fancy-schmancy washer & dryer that hum a little tune when your clothes are done? Fantastic...

BISMOW's Secret Family Recipe

Posted on February 26, 2009
Not so secret anymore is it? During his life, BISMOW's grandfather was a head chef at a well known upscale hotel in downtown Detroit. BISMOW & I still cook with his knives, a hodge-podge assortment that he picked out over the years.  Supplemented with a few Wusthof purchases, BISMOW and I love our knife collection, even if they don't all match...

Following The Leader

Posted on February 25, 2009
I'd like to start by publicly saying that if you are going to follow my blog, you should definitely follow Katie (Overflowing Brain) as well, because, well, think of it as two for the price of one. That and she did house & feed & wine & dine me for five days, and if I beat her out in followers, my planned thank you of spice drops probably won't be enough...

Stick A Fork In Me

Posted on February 24, 2009
I'm so tired I can barely form sentences or thoughtsfppllll...................................... see what I mean? I'm leaving for the airport soon where I will, fingers crossed, catch a non-stop flight back to Chicago and then take the El and a cab and finally stumble in the door where, fingers crossed, BISMOW will have made me my most favorite lemon chicken dinner that he makes so well...

Lundi Gras Catch Up

Posted on February 23, 2009
I'm still in New Orleans (um, it was 60 degrees here yesterday...I heard it was 11 in Chicago....need I say more?) and having a wonderful time.  Katie and her husband Slappy have been lovely hosts, even if Slappy has nicknamed me S.K. (Serial Killer) and I awoke to find a stuffed-animal Mardi Gras throw hanging from Mardi Gras beads from the chandelier outside my bedroom...

I'm Still Alive, Much To Slappy's Chagrin

Posted on February 21, 2009
I'm still alive. I've ingested a shrimp po'boy, red beans & rice, Kyoto sushi, Popeye's mashed potatoes & biscuits, Cooter Brown's oysters, and pancakes at Slim Goodies. Needless to say I'm having a lovely trip. Slappy is trying to figure out when I'm going to become the serial killer he's labeled me ( my new nickname: S...

Made Or!

Posted on February 19, 2009
Whew. I'm here. I'm still not sure how- I woke up at 4:oo in the morning (also known as O'Dark Thirty or Butt Crack of Dawn) and slid my way to the closest cab, as Mother Nature graced all of Chicago-land with a weather phenomena that can only be described as "wintry mix" that then froze to every surface, creating an uneven ice rink...

"Ghosts definitely live here," I say. My roommates look around in disbelief. "Ghosts.....or fraternity boys," mutters one of them. I can't help but think that the so-called "charm" we saw in this dilapidated old apartment was something we had invented...

This is the view from my parents

Posted on February 17, 2009
This is the view from my parents house, looking at it every day is akin to being on crack:It just makes you a little wobbly & light-headed. I suppose I could blame that on the altitude, but I prefer to blame it on the view. I like to look at it while sipping a glass of wine and listening to Papa Duke & BISMOW debate the PAC 10 and the Big 10 just one more time...

And The ___ Goes To.....

Posted on February 16, 2009
Monday morning at O'Dark Thirty BISMOW & I are heading back to Chicago. Until then here are the much promised & anticipated (well at least for me?) awards going out to 7 blogs who are new(ish) to these parts. Many thanks to always adorable & informative Preppy Princess for sending the honor my way in the first place! (Please remember I fudged the rules, but of course to all the recipients, please pass it on as you deem fit...

All In A Days Unemployment

Posted on February 11, 2009
The phone rings. Daisy: Hello? This is Daisy. Career Services: This is career services from you law school. We are calling to take the employment survey for the class of 2008. Do you have a moment? Daisy: Well how long will it take? I'm packing and running out the door to catch a flight...

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other

Posted on February 09, 2009
I have a few topics to discuss tonight so here we go. First. Let's talk about grammar. I don't want to harp on this or seem irked but rather I just want to say, I love my readers- but if my grammar, my topics, or anything else bother you, please, spend your time reading elsewhere...

Analyze This

Posted on February 08, 2009
Like most bloggers out there, I use a stats tracker to see who comes around this page of the internet. Don't worry, I really can't find out who people are, rather, where they live (city & state) and how they came here. For instance I can tell when people come through a search engine (most come from Google) and what they searched that brought them to this crazy corner of the internet...

January Round Up

Posted on February 06, 2009
Last weekend there was a sailing conference in town & BISMOW and myself had the pleasure of hanging out with The Errant Yachtsman (see blog linked on the right) and I completely forgot to tell y'all about it, what with the frantic scrubbing that ensues prior to a visit from Mama Duke...

Aaaand Take!

Posted on February 04, 2009
Mama Duke is safely back in Utah (skiing I'm sure, the lucky duck) and I'm sort of sitting around blinking going "Whaa?" because it was a lovely trip but it was a whirlwind trip, all the while the winds were swirling around Chicago (Why yes, it was a high of eleven degrees today) and we were finding ourselves walking! everywhere! in the wind! and now I'm just tired and content and want to snuggle up into my couch and not move for awhile...

Scrubbing & Sweeping

Posted on February 02, 2009
I apologize for the silence, but my Mom, she is coming to visit. Which means I'm busy scrubbing & cleaning & doing laundry and trying to look nice and show her that I'm looking for a job. (Then I can hit her up for money. Or at least a shopping trip or two...

Talking About Things Ladies Don't Talk About

Posted on January 29, 2009
My parents are two fabulous, albeit very conservative people. I was the kid who couldn't go to a party in high school unless the host's parents were home (and I had to prove it by having said parents call my parents upon my arrival....such a nerd) and my parents are generally of a conservative approach to most things in life...

Valentines Day

Posted on January 28, 2009
A few weeks ago (specifically, say, the first week of January) I walked into a large grocery store with BISMOW and found myself assaulted by the Valentines Day crap. I can't call it stuff because it isn't stuff it is crap. If BISMOW (or any of you sneaky buggers) ever purchased me a 4 foot tall white bear with a satin heart for a tummy that says "I LOVE YOU" I'd decapitate it and use the head to stuff down his/your throat...

Dream Walking

Posted on January 27, 2009
Last week I had a dream about an old friend of mine, who through a falling-out, is no longer a friend of mine. It is and was a situation that smelled badly from the beginning, and I think back sometimes and wonder if it could have gone differently. My ultimate conclusion has become that the "thing" that caused the end might not have happened...

Whew

Posted on January 26, 2009
After a whirlwind and fantastic weekend -including a wine & dessert party complete with Overflowing Brain, The Namby Pamby, Law With Grace, The Artful Blogger, The Alleged Lady, and our sidekicks PAG, Melissa & Scuba Steve (gold ribbon baking awards to Artful, Melissa, Katie & myself) - I finally ventured outside today and went down to jury duty...

Things You Didn't Know

- I only buy cleaning supplies in citrus scents and candles in citrus or "fresh linen" scents. I also try very hard to buy "green" cleaning supplies. - My hair was very very curly as a toddler, but it straightened out until high school when it started getting curly again...

Random

Posted on January 22, 2009
There are a lot of things that I don't want to do these days. With this job hunt being a mind-numbing experiment in "awful" I find myself without a lot of motivation these days. Laundry? Don't wanna. Wash my hair every day? Don't wanna. Clean the floors? I really don't wanna...

Dear Anonymous

Posted on January 22, 2009
The best part about having my VERY. OWN. BLOG. is that it is like my very own playground that I get to moderate. So here is the deal: Break-ups are hard, personal & messy. They often stem from relationships that have been spiraling down the toilet for months or years...

Success

Posted on January 20, 2009
This weekend I met up with one of my blog readers, Melissa. I was worried (the aforementioned reasons, most notably, what if she found my real life-persona not nearly as cool as my blog persona?) but I'd say the outing was a smashing success. We went out in search of mittens, which were found (including a gl-itten pair for me so I can iPhone in the winter) & purchased...

Yum.

Oooh. I bet you thought I?d never share the recipes all of my darling readers sent in for the holidays. Between the inability to post while on vacation, to the lack of a job, to the funeral, well, I?m behind. I?m sorry. Please accept my apology. The nice thing is?...

Happily Ever After

Posted on January 16, 2009
I don't know if this is something other (read: normal, adjusted women) women keep track of but I'm dismayed to find that with two exceptions, every guy I ever dated (high school & college) is now engaged to be married, or in fact, married. Most of them to the girl they dated directly after me...

Internet Friends to Real-Life Friends

Posted on January 15, 2009
Sitting behind a keyboard, writing to y'all isn't very scary. If I'm in a sad mood but feel like the blog has been a depressing-suckhole-of-lame I can either not write or try to find something light hearted. I could tell you that I weight 100 pounds (I don't...

Career Goals

Posted on January 14, 2009
Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments on my Stolen Lines post. I look forward to when Grace "hosts" it again- maybe I can tell you a more uplifting story, one that doesn't involve snot & flooded apartments? Your comments let my mind wander to where it often does, "Hey! I could write a book!"...

Stolen Lines # 1

Posted on January 13, 2009
I tried to think of the right answer. Unable to think of that, I spoke anyway. "Of course I want you to be happy. It is just that you make me happy. Don't you want me to be happy?" It didn't matter. It was over. We were over. The relationship had begun quickly, we'd met our first night of our sophomore year of college...

The Preppy Princess Cheers Me Up

When The Moon Hits Your Eye Like A Big Pizza Pie

Posted on January 12, 2009
No, we are not talking pizza...but spaghetti sauce is Italian & so is pizza, so I figured, why not? I recently got a comment from a new reader (hi Sarah!) and she was wondering if I had a good spaghetti sauce recipe. The short answer: yes. The long answer...

Hip & Cool

Posted on January 07, 2009
My family, for the most part, it fairly technologically savvy. My Grandparents have matching tiny Nokia phones. When my Grandmother had emergency surgery last year I received a text message telling me the news, sent from Grandpa's phone. My parents both have iPhones, and type text messages on the twee little keyboards...

The Pros & The Cons

Posted on January 06, 2009
Being unemployed gives me a lot of time to think. I now have many hours to think about many important things.  I can research the case law & rules & constitutions regarding the Senate's refusal to seat Roland Burris. I can read every article available on the conflict in the Middle East...

The Hits, They Just Keep Coming

Posted on January 05, 2009
BISMOW's Grandmother passed away today, with family by her side. She had been sick for a long time & has earned her much deserved rest. As for me, I hope that this is 2009's way of saying "Look Daisy, it can only get better from here."  Because it is, isn't it? I mean, at some point it has to be ok...

It Was Funny To Me At Least

Posted on January 05, 2009
As far as girls and sports go, I think I do fairly well. I love college football. Hockey is exciting. A summer afternoon spent at a baseball stadium is one of the best ways to pass the day. I try to understand the rules & the traditions- and just the other day I turned to BISMOW mid-football game and exclaimed "Holy Crap! Did Utah just run a hook and ladder? That was beautiful!" So yeah...

Resolution Revolution

Posted on January 02, 2009
Here we are. January 2nd, which technically means I'm a day behind in discussing this whole "Resolution" thing. Some people abhor New Year's resolutions. Some make many and keep none. Some people make one big resolution and keep it. And some make a bunch of small ones and keep them...

Upward Swing

Posted on January 01, 2009
In my opinion, 2009 is already looking a little brighter. First I changed my blog template (if you didn't notice, you might want to get your eyes checked) so thanks to everyone who commented positively. If you don't like it, alas I apologize. I'm not changing it, but I'm sorry it bothers you...

Don't Let The Door Hit Your Ass On The Way Out

Posted on December 31, 2008
For myself, my family & friends, and my internet friends, 2008 has been a doozy. A real humdinger. A real kick in the pants. Before I write about all the crap that I am so deliriously happy to bid au revoir to, I will focus on the good. Because, no matter what, there is always some good...

Day 1 of Unemployment

Posted on December 30, 2008
If it wasn't so depressing, I'd probably do a daily something on it. Maybe on the bottom of all of my posts I'll count, a little reminder to the world that Hello! Daisy is unemployed during our nation's "worst modern day financial crisis." But again with the depressing...

I Don't Like Mondays

Posted on December 29, 2008
I'm here with news I never thought I would write. Or share. Or have to deal with. Today I was let go by my firm. I'm not going to get into the messy details other than to say I think it was unfair, but um, not much I can do. Everything happens for a reason and other than my increasing worry over keeping the heat on, I am repeating a mantra to myself that everything happens for a reason...

One Week Later....

Posted on December 28, 2008
I am so sorry I went MIA with little explanation. I was thinking about this little corner of the internet while I was on vacation, and keeping my fingers crossed y'all wouldn't be too mad I was late coming with the recipes. I also thought about throwing caution to the wind and posting from BISMOW's parent's house...

Dear Chicago Mayor Daley (And Zeus):

Posted on December 18, 2008

A Two-For-One Epic Fail

Posted on December 17, 2008
Lets chat about the two things in my life that have failed so miserably lately that I'm beginning to wonder why I don't just move back to New Orleans. (Then I think about taking another bar exam and then I laugh and shelve that idea.) divbr //divdivFirst, the iPhone...

I Dream A Dream...

Posted on December 14, 2008
Part of what I love/adore/pine for about the holiday season is that you have full reign to dream. You can dream of world peace, getting along with your family (even if it takes two bottles of wine to get there), the perfect gift for your persnickety Dad, or just the perfect gift you are hoping is sitting under the tree or by the Menorah...

Christmas Bark (Of the Edible Variety)

Posted on December 11, 2008
The last post showed my inability to work with numbers (pfffffft lawyers don't use numbers) and the fact that some of you have sadly lived a life without bark. Williams Sonoma makes a popular peppermint bark (white chocolate & mint and..uhh..stuff) that many are obsessed with, but I promise this one is tastier...

Is It Friday Yet?

Posted on December 10, 2008
So much & yet so little has been going on. I'm almost done with all of my holiday shopping (The Artful Blogger is proving especially difficult to find something for as he has everything & buys whatever he wants when he feels like it, thus leaving the element of SURPRISE to pure chance) and I just need to ship a few more things off before I can relax on the couch for a few moments before I start my holiday baking...

Sunday to Monday Reader's Poll

Posted on December 07, 2008
A few weeks ago (back when I could actually think about food without rolling my eyes and wondering if it too will make me feel horrible) I asked every about their favorite holiday food, and there were answers. Many answers that sounded delicious and made me want to be a part of your family...

Oh Hospitals, You are So Funny

Posted on December 05, 2008
Daisy: Hi, I'd like to make an appointment, hopefully for today. I've been sick for the past three days, and I have a history of stomach problems since college, so I'd like to get it checked out.  My work won't let me come in until I'm cleared. Appointment Lady: Mmm ok...

Decay In Two Parts

Posted on December 04, 2008
Ta-tap. Tap tap. Are you there? Anyone? Hello? Awfully quiet around these parts lately, on both your part & mine. So rather than tell you stories about the horribly horribly delayed flight home from Savannah, or Puke Fest '08 courtesy of either some bad food or an even worse virus, or how two of my closest friends from college came to visit during Puke Fest (but they did not cause it with any of the wine, nope, in fact it was a legitimate evening spent on the bathroom floor) and how even through the stomach pain I wanted to figure out a way to wrap them up and keep them here for forever...

Top 10 Books

Awhile ago I talked about Grandma Duke, who in addition to many other lovely life accomplishments, was at one point the book reviewer & critic for a major US newspaper. She still writes the occasional review & her home has two personal libraries in it...

Stuff It

Posted on December 01, 2008
Moving right along from books (see below for Top 10 Books of All Time) to cooking. Everyone loves cooking. Or eating. If you don't love cooking, I'm going to assume you at least enjoy eating good cooking. So to start off the holiday recipe sharing (don't worry, there will be one big post with all of the recipes, after you share yours and allow me to cook a few up, hint hint) I'm going to discuss stuffing...

Odd Day

Posted on November 29, 2008
This morning started out with a car accident. BISMOW and I were off to a meeting in Savannah when someone (some idiot) ran a stop sign and we just smacked right into him. Airbags deployed, the front of the car was banged up, and we have some bumps and bruises...

ThankFULL

Posted on November 28, 2008
Whew. I'm stuffed. Yesterday's turkey-day extravaganza was nothing short of spectacular- shrimp salad, fried oysters, sweet potato souffle, mashed potatoes with gravy, prime rib with horseradish sauce, all topped with cheesecake. Sigh. It was delicious & the only meal I could eat all day...

Monday Night Football Readers Poll

Posted on November 24, 2008
Well, technically this poll has nothing to do with football, but I'm writing it while watching the Saints (Geaux Saints!) on my new 42 inch televison, therefore it works. Or at least takes the spotlight off of the fact that I'm a few posts and/or days behind my last post...

In All Seriousness

Posted on November 20, 2008
Beside the usual grumblings of the whole bar exam, finding a job, LIFE IS JUST TOUGH nonsense I seem to spout, I've left out the fact that my personal life has gone to hell in a hand basket. Ok, maybe that is a *slight* exaggeration. However, in the past 4 months there have been more shifts and splits and tears and just plain awful then I think one person is truly equipped to deal with...

Monday Evening Poll, Free With Advice

Posted on November 17, 2008
This poll starts with a story. Followed by a lesson. Which is followed by a poll. And finalized with photos of how dinner turned out last night. Ok? Ok. On Friday night, BISMOW was invited to a very posh dinner at a very posh site, for some work-related revelry and fun...

Reader Appreciation

Posted on November 16, 2008
I don't think I mention enough how wonderful my readers are. A diverse group for sure, but lately you've been coming out of the woodwork, leaving comments, letting me explore your blogs many of which make me laugh. A lot.  And those of you without a blog that still stop by and leave the nicest comments and often cheer me up when I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed or under the weather...

New

Posted on November 13, 2008
I'm getting ready to finish the second week at The Firm. I mentioned earlier that I'm not talking about the job, and I'm going to honor that. I needn't risk my job security, if for no other reason than y'all might get bored by the daily blog post of "SEND HALP PLS! NO EMPLOYMENT! CARTOONS R ROTTING MAH BRAIN!" What I will say is for many people, myself included, change is very hard...

Tuesday Evening Reader's Poll

Posted on November 11, 2008
I know. I know. I've been absent, again. I'm currently trying to figure out when/how to post. Work is out, and I'm there from the wee hours till after 5, and I tried posting from my iPhone's twee little keyboard, but apparently Blogger and Apple hate each other and set up some weird obscure "email your post" system that I do not have the mental capacity to understand...

Cole Haan, Ooh La Laa

Tap tap Tap... anybody there? On Monday I just kind of started "working" at my "new job" at "The Firm" and it just so happened to coincide with a few other small things like a national presidential election, my parents and grandparents coming into town, and the week I get sworn in as a real-live-malpractice-insured-lawyer...

First!

Posted on November 03, 2008
Today is my first day at my new job. I still have not settled on a name or acronym for this lovely little firm that is sparkly & new and has a 401K plan and health care and, ohmygoodness, a real-live salary. SNF = Sparkly New Firm? Thoughts? I'm just not sure...

Onward, Upward & November-Ho!

One Day More!

Posted on October 30, 2008
Today is the day. I'm going to skedaddle out of here a few minutes early (physical therapy appointment at 5) and then, the end of an era. I'm done at BPLF. Monday morning I'm off to shiny-new-real-lawyer job complete with an office & malpractice insurance...

Hodge Podge

Posted on October 29, 2008
Right. So the election has a few people confused, candidates & campaign managers included- but that has more to do with their late night out spending their hard-earned donation dollars on booze & call girls. But that I suppose that is a scandal that should break later...

The Dirtiest Election...Ever

Posted on October 28, 2008
Thought I was talking about the 2008 Presidential one, didn't cha? Well I'm not. I'm here to discuss an election that is dirtier. Darker. More twisted. With more mud-slinging than ever seen before. The best part? You are all eligible to vote. If you can find some dead people, they are eligible as well...

Monday Mid-Morning Reader's Poll

Posted on October 27, 2008
There is nothing like a Monday morning to slap you back to reality. I'm having a bit of a lousy one, with a lot of gritting my teeth & reminding myself that as of 5 pm on Thursday, I'm blowing this joint and never looking back. Oh how I would love to turn on my heel & walk out today, but alas, that seems "unprofessional" and "immature...

Fuzzy Line

Posted on October 24, 2008
After the love-fest that was yesterday, I find myself with nothing. I've got nothing for you people. Nothing interesting, exciting, funny, or unusual. Other than the fact that I'm in loooove with my physical therapist as I spent a lovely 45 minutes this morning with a deep tissue massage to all of mah afflicted shoulder muscles with the occasional request to move my arm and report back if hurt more or less...

Why

Posted on October 23, 2008
When I started this little corner of the internet I was kind of just opening a little place to talk. To myself of course. Nothing screams "normal law student behavior" than starting a blog on which to bitch & moan & complain about your classmates, your workload, your dumb stupid (expensive) law school, your writing assignments, your reading assignments, oh my goodness how did I end up here? In law school? With, gulp, only a few friends...

Blogging Along

Posted on October 22, 2008
Let me be the one to tell you that the only thing worse than showing up an hour early for an appointment you rushed to, is to find out that your early-arrival was totally your fault. And could have been avoided had you just looked at your day planner...

Cookbook

Over the years I've amassed my much-loved recipe collection in many forms. Snippets from magazines. Recipe cards. Many a good idea printed from The Pioneer Woman & her cooking site.  PAG's Mama, who is quite the accomplished Italian chef, photocopies recipes she once typed up on a type-writer...

Monday...Afternoon...Reader's Poll

Posted on October 20, 2008
Ok. It is the afternoon. In my defense I had a hell-ish morning in court being a pseudo-lawyer and I've had a headache for 3 days. I realize I've got nothing, nada, on Katie at Overflowing Brain, who is on day 30 or so of her headache. But, uh, yeah my 3 day headache has kind of sucked...

An Open Letter

To The Man On The Bus: I realize that your project for law school is rilly rilly important. And that your project partner is rilly rilly dumb. But your repeated explanations, in a LOUD LOUD EVENING VOICE at 8 am on a commuter bus, which is probably chock full of people who have also been to law school & graduated from it are totally judging you for your messenger bag with your law school name written across it...

I grew up in a household that under no circumstances, 18 or not, would any sort of piercing or tattoo be acceptable...

One Day, When I'm Not Busy, I Will Be Invincible

Posted on October 12, 2008
Well okay...that isn't the exact title of the book. But I got the feeling that September was a busy month, so busy in fact that while BISMOW finished the book, and I've seen it sitting on the Artful Blogger's end table, I only got a few reviews....neither of which was from them...

A Monday Morning Reader's Poll

Here we are again. Monday morning. So much has happened since last Monday - I found out I passed the bar, my new job was solidified, and BISMOW bought me flowers- so I'm feeling introspective. Pondering. Musing the great mysteries of the world. But in the meantime, lets get to what really matters...

Another Hurdle

Remember awhile ago when I alluded to a job that would come to fruition if I passed that ridiculous test in July? Well I passed. And now I have a corner office at a fabulous shiny new firm. Doing the same thing but on the opposite side of the aisle. While before I "chased ambulances" and sued "poor innocent doctors" I am now going to defend those helpless doctors and insurance companies from being sued by "greedy orphans and widows...

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS. * * * Edit: I got an email from IBABY! Telling me I passed...Character & Fitness. As in, I'm morally cleared to become an attorney if I pass the bar exam. Jerks.  Huge fat jerks. (stomach. churn. churn. churn. nausea. churn.) So um, I'll pop back in here a few times today to let you know that, yup, still nothing! And in the meantime, I'm doing a Q & A (and A for questions already posed in the comments section that I have not yet answered or responded to...

The Bar Exam: A Waiting Game

Posted on September 30, 2008
I still have no news, other than an awkwardly worded apology that sounds/reads like it was written by my "BFF Jill"- it contains the word totally and "so" as in, they are "so sorry". Supposedly results will begin posting over the next two hours but they are begging us not to log onto the site until we get our email telling us our results are up, so we don't crash the site again...

The July 2008 Bar Exam Results

Posted on September 29, 2008
So. Today a message went up on the Board of Admissions website saying (in Daisy's words) the following: "We know we told people in their official bar-examination packet that results would be mailed via USPS on October 15, with results going online shortly thereafter...

A Poll! Of a New Variety!

Posted on September 29, 2008
It is Monday morning which means it is time for a Monday Morning Reader's Poll. However we are stepping away from wedding-etiquette today and moving on to another and much more pressing topic. Bar Results & The Dissemination of Your Pass or Failure First I shall explain the dilemma: After three years of law school, of competing with the same people for the top 10% (which incidentally, to all you new-law-schoolers out there, let me remind you that 90% of you can't be in that club), of vying for CALI awards (top mark in the class overall), and just, well competing...

I Love This Crazy, Tragic, Sometimes Almost Magic, Awful, Beautiful Life

Posted on September 26, 2008
That post I wrote. About karma & good deeds and paying it forward? Well I'm continuing the challenge through the weekend to see how many good deeds we can get and also because while you might look and say "17 comments, yay!" about a million of those are taken up by the Namby Pamby and his deeds that FAIL...

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

-Bonus points to anyone who can name that musical- Things around this blogger world has been pretty dismal lately. Katie, over at Overflowing Brain is dealing with a headache (going on over a week now) with no answers, Lanny is dealing with yet another death in her close circle of friends, and BISMOW has just taken another shovel-full of crappy health news regarding loved family members...

So, here we are. Tuesday. I find Tuesdays to be the worst day of the week, and as such my creative juices are zapped. So instead I shall share a few things with you that I bet you didn't know.  Or wanted to know. And keep in mind that the October book, chosed by Anonymous Hottie will be revealed early next week...

A Monday Morning Reader's Poll

Posted on September 22, 2008
So last Monday I discovered that there were many strong opinions regarding the money dance and wedding manners in general. During a very scientific data analysis of all comments, I think the general thought- by you, the readers- was: The money dance was once traditional, can occasionally be cute, but now, due to the rising cost of attending a wedding, the money dance is a wee bit outdated and tacky...

The Wedding: A Recap

Posted on September 21, 2008
This weekend myself, BISMOW, and some other law school friends (including blogging compatriots The Artful Blogger & Anonymous Hottie) attended the wedding of one of our close law school friends. At a location a few hours away, the (beautiful!) Legal-Beagle-Bride married a wonderful guy, the ceremony was touching & the reception was, well, booze-filled & lovely...

And The Oscar Goes To....

Posted on September 19, 2008
Shut up. I could totally win an Oscar. I was an amazing actress in elemetary school. I even played Clara in the school production of the Nutcracker. Which was awesome until my gorgeous white linen nightgown & robe that I had to wear (cause Clara was supposed to be in bed when the Nutcracker came alive) turned sort of see through when the stage lights shone on me...

Indigestion

Dear People At the Restaurant Last Night:  Last night, BISMOW & I went out for a quick dinner. We had been running around and stopped in a local pub for their fabulous Wednesday night special of $5 burgers. That and they have a burger with a fried egg on top (for me...

Procrastination

Posted on September 16, 2008
So remember when I was studying for the bar exam and physically I just sort of fell apart? My shoulder hurt, my eye twitched and I actually, (shudder to think about it) developed a sore on my elbow from leaning on it while I studied for nine-gazillion hours a day? And then I sort of stopped talking about it, because listening to someone whine and coooommmplaaain really isn't fodder for an exciting blog...

Grace

Posted on September 16, 2008
Who knew that wedding etiquette was such a hot topic? As such, maybe next Monday I'll take another informal poll. We can discuss wedding showers (who really can make that invite list?) or registries or the dreaded lack-of-a-thank-you-note. Or...gasp....

Monday: A Reader's Poll

Posted on September 15, 2008
Today I'm going to take a poll, so please vote below. Your vote could also include "I don't care, I'm drinking margaritas & watching Law & Order reruns". I'm also going to keep my opinion regarding the matter to myself, but I am very curious about where y'all sit on this topic of wedding etiquette...

A Task From God (An Email)

Posted on September 11, 2008
(A note from Daisy: This is, in fact, the greatest email I have ever received. I hope that you too see it as such. Sparkler is one of my closest friends from college...a true kindred spirit & New Orleanian lover. And the Beach Music review post is below, so please, lets discuss!!!)Greetings all,Please do not be fooled by the subject of this email...

Melting Pot of Words....Beach Music****

Posted on September 11, 2008
First & foremost, I ask that every one of you takes a moment to think about what this day means & the ultimate sacrifice thousands of American's made in New York, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon in 2001. I am sure we all have our own memories, none pleasant, but let us never forget both the horror & the aftermath of that Tuesday morning...

Books & Politics

Posted on September 10, 2008
First off.... Beach Music reviews...get them to me!! Post will (hopefully) go up sometime tomorrow but I've only gotten maybe 5 reviews and I know around 20-25 people were reading the book... so all I can say is get'r'done! And now, politics. I'm taking today to officially announce that beyond reminding all of you to vote, I won't be discussing politics or the election on this blog, other than to say "Whew...

Things I Would Have Done Differently Had I Known: - This morning I would have put on tights because um, hello crisp fall morning. Brrr. Elephant In The Room

Posted on September 07, 2008
Why yes, I did in fact allude to a job offer. And no, we can't talk about it. Mostly because it is contingent on that pesky little exam I took in July and I just don't feel right opening a bottle of champagne or sharing any life-changing plans until, well, the ducks are in a row...

Curl Up With A Good Book

Posted on September 05, 2008
First, I am officially calling for all Beach Music reviews. For those I have already received, thank you! I really enjoyed reading what you had to say. For those who haven't had a chance (don't worry, hurricanes count as a valid reason!!) I hope you find time, but if not, don't worry...

Pressure

Posted on September 03, 2008
The only thing that can possibly make the pressure & anxiety of bar exam results worse? Knowing you have a (real) job waiting for you if you pass........ Some might call it a "dream" job but at this point I'm calling it a "contingent" job & refusing to let myself get too excited until I find out my bar exam results...

Make Levees Not War*

Posted on September 02, 2008
So I'm going to try to the best of my ability to explain New Orleans: its sea-levelness, its levee system and why it is so vulnerable. I'd like to start by saying I'm no expert, this is my best shot at an explanation but if any natives (NolaNotes & the like) find an error, please feel free to correct...

Relief, Exhaustion & Thanks

Posted on September 01, 2008
I'm too tired to write anything....but tomorrow I will start plugging away on a post to try explaining the levee system & just why New Orleans is vulnerable...and why it wasn't just a bunch of idiot settlers who built below sea level. The story is fascinating (at least to me) and I'll try my hardest to shed some light on the levee system to the non-New Orleanians among my readers...

Deja Vu

This post is a substantial repost of what I posted on this date, last year. This year of course I tweak my writing with thoughts of Gustav hovering over the Gulf. I pray it does what most hurricanes do....misses New Orleans, allows for that substantial sigh of relief, and a continuation of the slow, sultry life in the Big Easy...

About That "Job Search"

Posted on August 27, 2008
So. The job hunt. The job search. The never-ending, never-ceasing stream of rejection. That thing my parents ask about, hopefully, wistfully, somewhere in every phone conversation. The job search is going swimmingly thanks. To date I have:- Been told that I am over-qualified by virtue of working at BPLF- Been told that I am under-qualified by virtue of not having a license to practice yet- Been asked if the pipes at BPLF are made of 24 Karat gold- Been asked what Mr...

I just wanted to remind everyone that the end of the month is growing near....so soon we will be moving on to the next book. I have the privilege of knowing the September book and plan on picking it up this week to begin reading (maybe some car-reading on the way to Ann Arbor?) so I can properly introduce it...

If during the course of a conversation Best Buy informs you that if you do not solve the dispute regarding your "broken" (according to them) hard drive in the time frame they have provided (1 week) they will in fact give it back to Sony with all of your personal information on it, and you subsequently respond that would be a poor corporate choice by Best Buy thus lining them up for a lawsuit based on conversion of property, Best Buy will, in fact, hang up on you...

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

Posted on June 12, 2008
This recipe is so easy that I challenge all non-cooks to it. Seriously. You can't screw it up. You make the batter, pour it into two loaf pans & bake. You remove from the oven when the toothpick or knife comes out clean. It freezes well (just give it a few hours to thaw before you hack into it) and I've been known to bring it to breakfast meetings or eat it for an afternoon snack...

Blind & Selectively Deaf

Last night, in all my stressed out anxiety, BISMOW was over and came into the kitchen as I was cleaning it up and told me not to worry about it, that he'd take care of it. Specifically I was unloading the dishwasher when he came in.So imagine my surprise this morning when I went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea and found the sink still full of dirty dishes and the almost empty BRITA filter on the counter, not in the fridge, and the trashcan full of smelly trash...

Overwhelmed

The End of The World

Posted on June 08, 2008
BISMOW and I drove through the apocoli (plural for apocalypse) going back and forth to another Midwestern state for a wedding this weekend. We actually pulled over and sat in the car waiting & watching for a tornado funnel to come down upon us. We determined if we saw a funnel we were ditching the car (but I was bringing my new handbags with me, for real, they were in my lap in case of running) wearing BISMOW's sailing-rain gear jackets (that we had already donned) and booking it for a nearby filling station that looked sturdy & windowless...

I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying the recipe sharing. I love to cook, and while I don't claim to be the worlds best (or even close) I have been cooking for a looong time and so I think I've figured a few things out along the way. Law School Class Selection

Posted on June 04, 2008
My comments on "what to take" vs. "what not to take" have garnered a few responses so I figured I'd touch on it again. "S" makes a good point that not everyone wants to be a litigator and you might not have the option of taking your state-civil procedure class...

Deviled Eggs & Commercial Paper

Posted on June 02, 2008
Why yes, they do go together quite nicely now don't they?Commercial Paper ala Daisy:Blah blah blah. Maker Makee. Blah blah blah. If people didn't write checks I wouldn't have to memorize the holder in due course rules...again.Deviled Eggs ala Daisy:I won't begin to press my feelings about deviled eggs on you in the sense of what to put in them- vigorous debates could be had about dill or sweet pickle (dill is best), to paprika or not to paprika (I like a little color on top myself so I say sprinkle away), if some egg white should be in the filling mixture (I say yes, best way to use the eggs that boil all funny and can't hold any filling), if celery is necessary (do you like crunchy food? if so, throw some celery in) to mayo or not to mayo (as much as I dislike mayo, a dallop of real, full fat Hellman's mayo is necessary- don't even think about cheating and using Kraft (it is for Yankees according to my Grandmother) or, yee gads, Miracle Whip which is just for the dogs if you ask me) and of course, mustard or no mustard (always use mustard, of the cheap yellow variety, for good color and flavor)...

Well other than this: Appalling. As I've less than a month left as a clerk at BPLF (Which, um, maybe I'm coming back to? But maybe I'm not?) I'm wondering what the exit protocol is, considering more than likely I won't have any answers on that situation...

Anti-Climatic

Posted on April 22, 2008
Last night was my last night class ever. And it was going well until the police came in and said we had to evacuate the building immediately.Note to all jokers out there: Bomb threats on schools are taken very seriously. And so I left and took a cab home with the lovely Legal Lucy where we discussed the awesomeness that is not knowing what exactly we are doing upon graduation...

I've worked 30.3 hours past my normal 30-hour a work week schedule in the past 7 days. I was out of town for two of them. And I still made it to one of my classes this week.The. End.(Um but this 2" trial brief? With six attachments? Is going to cause opposing counsel to freak...

Overtime

Posted on April 15, 2008
I was supposed to work for two hours today & then go to school.I'm approaching hour twelve in the office. I ate lunch & dinner at my desk. And my head still hurts. The sweet sweet smell of overtime, I mean, success. Or sleep deprivation. One of the above.

Hypochondriac

Posted on April 14, 2008
I'm fairly certain this horrific splitting headache (complete with nausea, photophobia, and dizziness) is the exact same thing our client (in the current trial) died of.That or a sympathetic manifestation of the same symptoms. But I'm going with an intra-cranial brain bleed because oh man it hurts...

They Won!

Posted on April 13, 2008
And all was well. Now back to the grind. (Sigh. Big, big sigh.)Only two weeks of law school classes left. So very overwhelming yet underwhelming at the same time. Considering I have to immediately start studying for the bar after I graduate I have a feeling it will be a big anti-climatic moment...

If you are ever going to trial, I would highly recommend you "google" all the parties to the case as well as any expert witness you or the other side have proffered.Because you might just hit paydirt. It might be inadmissible paydirt, but it might also add the perfect fuel to the fire to make you remember why you do this...

Mushy: An Update

Nola of Nola Notes went to my favorite restuarant and ordered my favorite thing in the whole entire world, what I have dubbed "heaven on a plate".It made me smile as I tried to unbury myself from the 8 binders of depositions & paperwork I'm wading through for trial next week...

Mushy

Posted on April 09, 2008
A few weeks ago when Eddie & HASWOE came to visit, Eddie gave me a parting gift: a mushy stress ball in the shape of a heart. It is red and covered in the logo of some company...highly scientific description I'm sure. Anyway, BISMOW and I think that this mushy heart is quite funny and BISMOW threatened to hide it where I would least expect it, so the mushy heart would jump out and scare me...

Change

Starbucks had new cups today and I almost died, right there on the spot. We all know how I feel about Starbucks Red Cups, so any change in the cups is something I need some advanced warning on. Then, right before I died there on the spot I had to pull it together and ask the Barista to please give me a new-new cup because he had just sloshed half my drink down the side of the one he was about to hand me...

Good Morning Sunshine

Getting back in the swing of things after a little vacation is never fun, but what is less fun is being the office-mate to the person bitching about being back in the confines of meetings & deadlines after their faabulous, relaxing vaacation so I shall strive to not be that person...

Scarlett, PAG and myself just finished breakfast on a balcony overlooking the ocean. It was divine. Not so divine: the raging hangovers AND my horrific sunburn on a patch of my right knee and my left bicep. Hollywood

There is a movie with a very, very famous set of actors and actresses filming on my block this week. When I say filming on my block I mean right in front of my damn apartment. I can't tell you which movie or actors in case, say, some internet-weirdo does some research and finds where I live and shows up and hacks me into bits for saying something they didn't "agree" with, but um, in the meantime, think big...

Or something like that.Let me just say that if, lets say, hypothetically you opened a neat boutique-y dog kennel, then hypothetically you would avoid:a- opening one two blocks from another kennel of the exact same concept ORb- having basically the exact same name as the aforementioned kennel of the exact same concept And, lets say, if you hypothetically opened said dog kennel and did not avoid a OR b, then I would say that you should have a really really big sign telling customers at the front door that you are not the kennel of the exact same concept and almost the exact same name located a mere two blocks away...

Congratulations!

BISMOW started his new job today. For a variety of boring reasons (i.e. financial and the like) this is a very good thing. He is a lawyer and with the dismal market out there, the fact that he was able to make not only a change but an "upward" one at that is pretty awesome...

St. Patty's Day

Posted on March 16, 2008
Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day. The Pope said so, and from what I hear, he has authority on those things. So yesterday BISMOW and I went from party to party and bar to bar and got our green on. It was great. Other than the unruly drunks, the vomit on the sidewalks and the other usual grossness of "Drinking Holidays"...

Wrong Number

Posted on March 04, 2008
Someone is an idiot.Someone, more specifically, who has a phone number that is clearly similar to mine. And this idiot, being completely unaware of what their phone number is, is giving my number out instead. The incoming calls have been crazy. I haven't actually had a chance to answer any of them as these individuals always seem to call when I'm in class, at work, or running an errand that requires me to interact with other people, preferably without my phone glued to my ear...

Atonement i.e. Paying For Depression

Posted on February 27, 2008
Just in case anyone was wondering, I saw Atonement.Let me rephrase that. I asked BISMOW if he wanted to go to a movie and when he said yes I told him that Atonement had been nominated for a lot of awards and was set during WWII. In my defense, this was really all I knew about it...

Steam Cycle

Papa Duke just sent me a text message telling me that he flew over my college and was hanging out, eating red beans and rice, in New Orleans. And The Oscar Goes To.....

Posted on February 25, 2008
So, like many people, American and otherwise (otherwise? really? sorry guys, it is Monday, and with that comes a complete lackofvocabulary...) I watched the Oscar's last night. Actually, after spending five entire, horrible hours of my life learning about being an ethical lawyer or, rather, learning the finer topics usually tested on the "how to be an ethical lawyer" mandatory exam I crawled home, ordered a take & bake pizza (Ahem! New favorite pizza combo! Whole wheat crust, sauce, cheese, fresh garlic and basil...

Does Daisy Have OCD? Vote!

Posted on February 19, 2008
Sometimes people (a/k/a, PAG, Anonymous Hottie, Bismow & Mama Duke) inform me that I'm weird. As in organized and OCD. Here is my closet...I don't think it is that organized. If you look closely in the lower right hand corner you can see the embroidery on my traditional German wear for Oktoberfest in Munich...

Lent....

Posted on February 08, 2008
I should preface this by saying I'm not actually Catholic, so giving up something for Lent is not something that my church asks me to to do...but the idea of giving something up for 40 days before Easter doesn't seem like a half bad one, and so for most of my college & law school years, I've given something up...
