So I was very impressed by how calmly I handled the TT issue. I emailed the principal late Wednesday night, informing her in no uncertain terms that this new policy would not apply to my children and that it was inappropriate and unlawful. I was fully prepared to argue to the death if I encountered any resistance...

Pissed Off Mama Bear

TT had an accident at school today because the teacher wouldn't let her use the restroom when she asked. Now, I was horrified by the thought of this, but thought perhaps TT's account was skewed to her benefit. So I calmly emailed the teacher and asked her if TT's (haha, I just got the pun!) account was accurate...

Well that was interesting

Today I had to do a doc review at the firm that offered me a job before Satan f/k/a Big Boss torpedoed it by refusing to waive a conflict. The associate working on the case for the other side was actually one of the many, many people with whom I interviewed at that firm...

It Sucks to be the Little Fish

Busy day. I had to finish up my off-site doc review and then rush back to the office for a meeting with a new client, followed by a long chat with Big Boss.Attitudey Judy will not be getting the boot, at least not until after the holidays. It's not my call, or the outcome would have been different...

Holding Pattern

Posted on November 12, 2009
Don't know what's going to happen with secretary aka Attitudey Judy (I love that Gillian!) I do not have the authority to fire her. Big Boss is supposed to be handling it, but he is out of town.Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Attitudey Judy sent an email late today informing the office that she has a "follow-up doctor's appointment" tomorrow...

Pirates and Princesses and Rodents, oh my!

Posted on November 10, 2009
Looks like we are all systems go for spending Christmas at Disney. I got the ok from my bosses, sent vacation letters to the courts and made the final payment last week. We're booked for breakfast in Cinderella's castle on Christmas morning, and I just made reservations for pirate makeovers for the girls, thanks to a 50% discount for resort guests...

Yep, it's Monday

Posted on November 09, 2009
Learned first thing this morning that the other female association put in her resignation. That will definitely mean more on my plate, and I am pretty darn busy already. And that leaves just me with all the guys. Also learned that the situation with my secretary was even worse than I thought...

Mommy Fail

Posted on November 08, 2009
Last night at dinner I accidentally sent a naughty text intended for DH to PS. Oops. Fortunately I immediately realized my mistake and demanded her phone to delete the message. And it was more innuendo than overt, so hopefully she won't be scarred for life if she manages to pull the deleted message out of the trash can...

Crazy Week

Posted on November 04, 2009
We've known for weeks that this week would be crazy, and it has lived up to the hype. DH left on Sunday for a conference--which left me playing the part of the single parent for the first half of the week. I have to say kudos to the single and military moms out there--I'm found it exhausting for only two days, and I have a nanny/housekeeper to help out...

Frustration

Posted on November 01, 2009
So the problems with my secretary have continued this week, culminating in a Friday afternoon showdown where she informed me that I was "condescending and micromanaging." I responded that I would absolutely continue to micromanage her because she had made several calendaring errors, even when I had given her explicit instructions, and that it was ultimately my responsibility to ensure that all

Smackdown

So, I know that I sometimes complained about my secretary at my old firm, but today I seriously contemplated sending her a email telling her how much I under-appreciated her.I am having major issues with my new secretary. We'll call her Thelma. She started the same week that I did and she is assigned to me and the other young, female associate...

My brain hurts

Posted on October 22, 2009
I have spent the last two days researching issues that take me right back to 1L civ pro. In retrospect, I'm not sure that civ pro is a great first year class--or maybe its just the way it was taught to me. I mean, I know that civ pro covers fundamental issues that are relevant to every type of case, but I just did not really understand the impact back when I had absolutely no understanding of

Last Thursday the twins brought home a form to enroll in an after school club that was starting today. The school does club sessions once a semester and they usually fill up quickly, so there have been times when the girls did not make it into the club they wanted...

Maintaining the balance

Posted on October 18, 2009
Finally we have had a nice, even week. All of the kids are healthy again. I left the office before 6:00 every day. No emergencies--except for the microwave suddenly quitting for no apparent reason. But in the scope of the disasters that we have had lately, replacing the microwave was fairly easy and inexpensive...

Ummm, no thanks

Posted on October 15, 2009
I received an email early this morning from one of the secretaries at work. It said that there would be a potluck on Friday and suggested that we would all need to bring dishes. And then I saw that the email was addressed only to the females in the firm...

Boo!

Posted on October 10, 2009
I can't believe how far into October we are already. We got a costume magazine in the mail a few weeks ago, and the kids have been pouring over it. Unfortunately, most of the pre-teen costumes are trashier than I am comfortable with. So I promised PS that I would make her an awesome (non-slutty) witch costume...

The beat goes on...

Posted on October 09, 2009
I keep thinking we're in the clear with all the kid stuff ... and I keep being proved wrong. PS was feeling better on Tuesday, but had to stay home because she was not yet fever-free for 24 hours.I asked the nanny to come in at 10, planning to leave PS alone for a couple of hours after I left at 8...

Yes, children are resilient

So the sick kid decided to put her ticket money plus her birthday money into an ipod touch. She spent all evening loading it up with tunes and apps, and seems to have forgotten about the concert she missed.I do feel a little indulgent allowing my 11 year old to have a $200 device that I couldn't have even dreamed about at that age...

blogging, not working. Took PS to the doc this morning. Yep, she has the flu. No concert for her tonight. She's taking it fairly well, and DH managed to sell the tix to a coworker. Now I'm just trying to line up childcare for the rest of the week. I am fortunate to have a nanny willing to care for flu-infected children and PS doesn't seem to be nearly as affected as her sisters were...

Problem Girl

Posted on October 04, 2009
I somehow managed to survive the last week, although there were moments when I was not sure that I was going to. The work/mommy balance has been a real struggle--harder than it has been since my first year of law school, I think (when SS had pneumonia 4 times!)After DH missed work on Monday and Tuesday, the nanny stayed with the kids on Wednesday, but I left work early to take them to the doctor

I'm exhausted

Posted on October 01, 2009
Between sick kids, insanity at work, and my pro bono client demanding action after she sat on her petition for two months I am just about at my breaking point.Fortunately, PS seems recovered from her kidney stone and the twins are quickly getting over the flu...

Not getting any better

Posted on September 30, 2009
SS was sent home from school yesterday with a fever and TT was sent home today (and we checked her this morning and she was perfectly fine!) Turns out they have the swine flu. Seriously--I have three kids and two get the swing flu and the third gets a kidney stone ALL IN ONE WEEK? Meanwhile I have an MSJ response due tomorrow...

Update on Other People's Parents

Posted on September 28, 2009
I just received another comment on this post, which reminded me that I needed to update this story. So the week after Friend spent the weekend with us, she disappeared off the face of the planet. Apparently she came to school on a Thursday, told some kids that she was packing up to move, was pulled from school early the same day, and hasn't been seen since...

Sunday's post: Blogging from the ER on my iphone

Apparently I jinxed myself with yesterday's post. There has been plenty of butt-sitting today, but it has all been at hospitals.Turns out, PS has a kidney stone. Who the hell has ever heard of an 11-year-old kid getting a kidney stone? The poor kid spent most of her day curled into a fetal position...

My life in chaos has continued this week. My to-do list at work was frighteningly long at the beginning of the week, but it is manageable again after I knocked out a couple of research projects that took much less time than I anticipated. We have been car shopping for DH, so I had to rush home Monday night so that we could return a car that we had been test driving over the weekend to a

I live at the circus

Posted on September 14, 2009
I really wonder if other people have to endure the craziness that we do.On Friday, we were late getting out the door to school. Then TT knocked over her bicycle and was completely incapable of picking it up. I couldn't get to it because the car door was open and blocking the way...

Friday PS called me at work to ask if a new friend could come over. PS said Friends moved to her school late last year and hadn't yet made very many friends. Probably 90% of the lawyers that I work with are trustworthy people. You make an agreement with somebody, and that is it. Of course, being lawyers we CYA and put it in writing, but there is rarely an issue. Then there is the other 10%. Those are the ones who give the rest of us a bad name...

Maybe I'm smarter than I thought

Leaving old firm may have turned out to be a better decision that I realized. As I was heading into the office Friday morning I saw one of the secretaries from old firm crossing the street. I know she takes the train to work, and she wasn't especially close to a station, so I pulled over and offered her a ride...

It's raining men--or jobs, as the case may be

When is free really free?

PS and I were playing with a keyboard at Costco the other day. She asked if I could play anything, and I responded with the truth: the only thing I can play on the piano is Silver Bells. She was quite impressed with my ability to peck out the first few bars as I sang out the notes ("C-A-G-E, C-A-G-E, E-D-C, A-A-A")...

Cell phone demons

Posted on August 29, 2009
Would you be concerned if your lawyer whipped out this phone? I LOVE this case. It screams something, but I'm not sure it's professionalism. PS said, "it doesn't mean your not a grown up, it just means you're a grown up who likes to have fun."

Perfect Day

Posted on August 26, 2009
Left the house at 7:15 so that I could make it to the office by 8 for an 8:30 meeting with a client. Made it to work at 8:35. (Fortunately both boss and client were late as well.)Spent all day doing off-site doc review with client.Broke for lunch and backed into a low concrete wall that was completely invisible from the driver's seat of my ginormous SUV--with client in the car...

Crazy day. I had a dentist appointment that made me about an hour late for work. (I had to be fitted for a crown. I have been putting it off for, oh, 2 years, but I am losing my dental coverage at the end of the month, so it was now or never. I've been on DH's health insurance forever, which includes dental and vision...

Reason # 5,928, 546 why I made the right decision when I left Old Firm

Posted on August 16, 2009
Friday afternoon I was talking to New Boss when Old Firm came up. New Boss said, "Boy, Partner really didn't want to talk to me when I called for references. He told me that my call should be directed to human resources, but I would talk to me because it is you...

To celebrate 2 weeks of gainful employment and my first paycheck in 3 months, I finally got my iphone last night. I had been debating between the iphone and blackberry, and since my office runs macs and our calendaring email system is a mac-based system, the iphone seemed to make the most sense...

The bane of youth

Posted on August 13, 2009
Today I met a client with whom I telephone conferenced earlier in the week. He asked if I had been doing this very long. My boss piped in that I had just started with the firm, but that I had been practicing for a couple of years. Client said, "well you couldn't have been practicing very long, you sure don't look very old...

New job: week 2

Posted on August 12, 2009
Tomorrow marks 2 weeks at the new job. I think this week is going much better than last. Last week I was feeling pretty overwhelmed with getting up to speed on several cases at once. At old firm I was finally at the point where I had brought most of my cases up from their infancy and I was very familiar with them...

Holiday

Posted on August 09, 2009
We've never taken the kids on a big vacation, for several reasons, I guess. For one, the cost for 5 people to travel anywhere becomes astronomical very quickly. When we were living on a single income, most trips were simply out of our budget, so we tended to stick close to home...

Enjoy the silence

Posted on August 06, 2009
So I guess my posting has slowed now that I have rejoined the ranks of the employed. My week started off slowly, with a little bit of thumb-twiddling. Now my desk is covered with projects and I already feel like I'm behind. I have worked later than I would prefer nearly every night this week...

First Day in the Office

Posted on August 02, 2009
I have moved from a mid-sized firm in a big shiny building downtown, to a smallish firm in a smaller shiny building not downtown. In one of my interviews with another firm, someone asked me how important it was for me to remain downtown. I responded that it was not at the top of my priority list--which is true, I could not care less about the "prestige" of working downtown...

Day 1

Posted on July 30, 2009
Well, I survived Day 1 of the new job. Thanks to all of you who wished me luck!I wasn't in the office--instead they sent me to a seminar being presented by the female attorney who initially interviewed me. I am sure that the reason I got the job began with her...

Karma and the Pessimist

Posted on July 28, 2009
I'll admit that I am a little stunned at the way things worked out. I ended up with a much better job that the one that I would have taken had previous Big Boss not acted like a manipulative asshole.I am finally out of the insurance defense mill. This is a good thing...

I got the job!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With Conservative Firm. And it comes with a nice salary bump, and a substantially lower billable requirement. They want me to start ASAP--as early as this Thursday! I must now go do the happy dance!

Still no offer

Posted on July 27, 2009
Had my third interview at Conservative Firm today. I met with two junior partners, and both of those seemed to go fine. Then I met for the second time with the two named partners for whom I would be working. They still seem a little hung up on my grades, but the repeated how impressed they were with me personally...

Good weekend

Posted on July 26, 2009
Friday we had Birthdaypalooza for the twins. First we headed out to the waterpark, where we spent a good part of the day. The kids had a great time and TT was finally brave enough to try the BIG water slides. We headed home, showered, and let the birthday girls choose where to go for dinner...

So, am I just a pessimist?

Posted on July 25, 2009
So I emailed conservative firm my ranking and honors info yesterday, but I got a weird auto-responder, so I followed up with a phone call this morning. I relayed the information over the phone, but couldn't really gauge Partner's reaction. But, this afternoon Partner called and wants to set up another meeting for Monday morning...

Eight

Posted on July 24, 2009
Today is the twins' eighth birthday. It's hard to comprehend that they have actually been in the world for 8 years. It doesn't seem like it's been that long.I'll admit that infant twins were hard. The first 5 months were a complete blur because I got virtually no sleep and I felt like all I ever did was feed babies...

Another hit

Posted on July 23, 2009
I contacted the registrar's office today regarding my ranking and honors designation. While they do not give specific rankings to students, they are provided to graduates upon request. So I now have my exact ranking. I am not as close to the top third as I had anticipated--which seems to render the honors designation almost meaningless if almost half the class graduates with honors...

Is this good or bad?

Posted on July 22, 2009
This evening I received a call from Partner at Conservative firm, who had a few follow-up questions for me. It seems I confused them with my complicated, nontraditional background that is not really explained by my resume. He wanted to verify when I graduated undergrad, if I had started right after high school, and when I started law school and when I transferred...

Always check your rear view before leaving the house

This morning I had my second round of interviews with Conservative Firm. I carefully selected my black skirt-suit with barely-there pinstripes and even pantyhose.I was feeling pretty good about the interview when I arrived home, but when I reached behind me to unzip my skirt, I found that it was already unzipped...

To be or not to be

Posted on July 20, 2009
Conservative Firm just called to set up an interview with 2 named partners (I already interviewed with one of 3 named partners). Woot! This is my last glimmer of hope of landing a job before my end of summer deadline, and then it is full speed ahead with my solo gig...

I have good kids

Posted on July 19, 2009
The twins woke DH and I this morning blaring "They Say It's Your Birthday." It is DH's b-day and playing the song first thing in the morning and dancing like crazy people is our family ritual, but this is the first time it has been kid-initiated.Then they presented DH with a breakfast menu...

Real life and movies

So this morning we we headed out to the early showing of Harry Potter (which saves us $15 - 20 vs. going to afternoon or evening showings.) Just as we were about to leave our neighborhood, I noticed a car on the side of the road with the door slightly open and the driver jerking around...

The Last Unicorn

So I worked the Legal Aid intake clinic last night. I think it was good for me. A little slap upside the head to remind me that there are plenty of people with even worse lives than me right now. And it was nice to have a reason to put on my suit and heels and look like a lawyer again...

A little of this and a little of that

Posted on July 16, 2009
Finally met with my pro bono client yesterday. At least I have something to do, now. I'm also working the Legal Aid intake clinic tonight. I'm trying to increase my positive karma.***I emailed the firm that was waiting 3 weeks to do call backs. They said they are still interested in me--just moving slowly...

SuperBob Update

Posted on July 16, 2009
I got a call back from the low-cost vet clinic today. They will do the heartworm treatment for $265--which is less than 1/3 the cost from the vet. But they can't get him in until the end of August. They said it was ok to wait, but he needed to get back on the heartworm preventative...

The Amazing Adventures of SuperBob

Last night as we were about to head to bed, DH and I heard Bob going nuts outside. We peeked out the back door to find Bob nose to nose with a curled up snake. At that point, we could only see that it was bigger and darker than a garden snake--and was possibly a rattlesnake...

Really, God? Really??

Posted on July 14, 2009
I feel like I just keep getting punched in the face over and over.I took Bob to the vet this morning for his annual checkup and shots. He was a couple of months overdue, and this was our first visit with a new vet.The vet kept going on and on about what a good-looking dog he is, coat was in good shape, ears were perfectly clear, teeth were pearly white, no fecal parasites...

Facebook and Tragedy

Posted on July 13, 2009
Facebook seems to have a way of putting us within 6 degrees of separation of tragedy over and over again. I guess I've lived a somewhat charmed life in the sense that I have not personally had to handle any stunning tragedies. Today I learned via Facebook of a father (the ex-husband of a friend) who drowned in front of his children this morning--right after saving one who had fallen into the

Yummy summer entertainment for kids.

Today we made ice cream in a bag. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it actually worked and tasted really good! You do have to shake pretty vigorously and the kids weren't the best shakers, so theirs were more like milkshakes, but mine hardened up pretty well...

Sotomayor hearing

Posted on July 13, 2009
So, being unemployed with nothing better to do, I am watching the Sotomayor confirmation hearings. This is my first go 'round watching confirmation hearings--so perhaps I am just naive. But some of these senators are major asshats. Some of the Republicans seem to be taking an opportunity to lecture, bordering on a personal attack in their opening statements...

Thank God I'm Married

Posted on July 12, 2009
I met a friend for drinks last night at this tiny divey honky tonk where the beer is cold and cheap and served in a can. We met at 7 and ended up staying much later than either of us intended. (We had to refill our parking meters twice.)When we first arrived, there were only a couple of others in the place, but as the night wore on, the crowd thickened and shots started pouring into plastic cups

Adventures in finding office space

Posted on July 09, 2009
My biggest challenge with my plan to go solo is finding office space. I need to keep my overhead as low as possible, and office space ain't cheap. Ideally, I could work out some kind of office-sharing agreement with another attorney--but I'm not sure how to go about that...

Another fabulous day in the fabulous life of LC

Posted on July 09, 2009
I knew it was too good to be true when it only cost $220 to fix the A/C in my car last week. Today I was heading out on an errand when it started making a funny noise. Every time I accelerated it sounded like a baseball card stuck in bicycle spokes...

This is why I didn't want to practice family law

Posted on July 09, 2009

Today's conversation

"Mom, Bob's pink thing is hanging out." (Bob is the dog.)"Mom, what is the pink thing?""It's his pen!s.""But how come you can't see it all the time?""Because it only sticks out when he's happy. The rest of the time it is shriveled up where you can't really see it...

Food

I have to say that I made some fabulous dishes to take to my neighbor yesterday. I baked Poppy Seed bread with Glaze that is so yummy and super easy. (It made 2 loaves, so I kept one and gave the other away.) The glaze really makes the bread, which reminds me of the poppy seed muffins that I would occasionally splurge on at Paradise Cafe when I was working...

Ups and Downs

Posted on July 06, 2009
The A/C problem was only a broken belt--yea! I had been poking around the internet and reading of $1200 repairs, so I was anticipating the worst. My car is ready, but I have no means of retrieving it, so I guess I'll be hanging out at home today.I called to reschedule with the recruiter, but she is leaving town, so we can't meet for 2 weeks...

I feel like a jerk

Posted on July 05, 2009
I was awakened last Tuesday night by flashing lights outside my window. They were from an ambulance in front of my elderly neighbors' home. As I was contemplating whether to go offer assistance, an EMT got in the rig and left. I never saw them load anybody into the ambulance and there were no lights or sirens and no apparent hurry...

A little advice

Posted on July 04, 2009
Do not shout to whatever random deity may be listening, "Can you please throw a little more shit at me? Please?" Because, the answer is "Yes." It can always get worse.DH and I hopped in the car today to run an errand. About 30 seconds after we pulled out of the driveway, the A/C stopped blowing cold air...

Ugh!

Posted on July 02, 2009
I just received a phone call from my former secretary--at 5:15 on the eve of a 3-day weekend. Stupid Mom Move

I told the twins to let the guinea pig run around in SS's room while PS cleaned out her cage. We have a little carrier, but the poor creature spends her whole life in a cage, and I though she might like the chance to roam a bit. (She is more timid and apt to scratch than our previous guinea pig-maysherestinpeace-so the kids don't play with her as much...

Weird Facebook Friend

Posted on June 30, 2009

I'm sure that we went to high school together, but we didn't hang out together and I have only a vague recollection of them.Once such person, we'll call her Sue, friended DH shortly after she friended me...

I have a case!

Posted on June 29, 2009
LegalAid finally called me back today, and I agreed to take on a pro bono case. I am excited and freaked out at the same time. It's a divorce case, and one that could turn nasty. I do not practice family law--although it is a direction I would have to take if I end up going solo...

The Evil Force

Posted on June 29, 2009
At some point in the middle of the night last night I moved from my bed to the couch. I kept having bad dreams and would wake sitting upright and trying to figure out what was happening. I can't really describe what the dreams were about--but I had this sense of something closing in on me, sort of encapsulating me...

Grumble, Grumble

Posted on June 26, 2009
I just received an email from Conservative Firm that they do not intend to conduct call back interviews for another 3 weeks! On the one hand, I take it as a good sign that they bothered to tell me this. On the other hand, I need to start working. My psyche needs to start working, and my bank account needs me to start working...

The most interesting interview to date

Posted on June 26, 2009
Today I had an interview at a firm 60 miles from home. Their offices are in a turn-of-the-century house that they have fully restored. It was just gorgeous--beautifully restored and beautifully decorated. They obviously observe casual Friday, as all of the staff and the first partner (Partner A) whom I met were wearing jeans...

Today ...

Posted on June 24, 2009
I applied for at least 5 jobs. One was a temporary position at a firm with an office dog. I like the idea of an office dog.I took PS to the library for a workshop on making flip-flops out of duct tape. (Don't ask me-but it was so popular that not all of the kids who showed up could participate...

Interview

Posted on June 24, 2009
I was pretty apathetic going into today's interview. I am tired of being rejected, and I wasn't sure how interested they would be in me because I have virtually no exposure to the type of law that they practice. But it went much better than I anticipated, and now I'm afraid I have my hopes up once again...

Another day another hill to climb

Posted on June 22, 2009
I think the hardest part about job hunting is the roller coaster emotional toll. Initially I was rolling uphill--I was leaving old firm, but I had several interviews lined up and I convinced myself that my unemployment would be short lived. I eventually hit the peak and plummeted downward when none of those interviews transformed into jobs...

"Don't be such a pu$$y!"

Posted on June 18, 2009
That's what one of my twins told the other when she started freaking out about a bug. Being the fabulous mom that I am, I burst out laughing. "Wha-at?" said SS."Sweetie, do you know that is not a nice word?""What do you mean--it's just another word for kitty?"By this point SS is obviously embarrassed and realizes that she unintentionally said something that she shouldn't...

8 pounds

Posted on June 15, 2009
No, not the sequel to the Will Smith movie. That's how much I have gained during my one moth of unemployment. (BTW, today is my 1 month unemployedaversary--yea for me.)Apparently I should have been following gudnuff's workout advice. It's not hard to figure out the source of these 8 pounds...

Inlaws

Posted on June 13, 2009
I love my inlaws--I really do. But I though I might strangle my FIL this weekend.DH and I made an impromptu road trip Friday afternoon to help out FIL because MIL, who had been receiving outpatient treatments at a cancer center 700 miles from their home, was admitted for inpatient care...

LC Unveiled

Posted on June 11, 2009
'Cause I know you've been dying to know what I look like. (I love it when I get sneak peeks at the bloggers that I follow.) DH found this app and has been making Obamicons of the entire family. PS picked out the caption. On the job front, I have been much more relaxed since the girlies have been out of school...

Kid Funnies

Posted on June 10, 2009
To make up for my downer post yesterday, here are comments from random children I have encountered lately. My little monkey girl, SS, got a little carried away climbing a tree at a park and got stuck about 10 feet of the ground. I eventually went to rescue her, but she was well above my head and I had to coax her to back her way down the tree...

Sadness

Posted on June 09, 2009
DH attended the memorial service today for a teen who took his own life last week. I simply can't imagine a worse pain for a parent to endure. This child was getting ready to go to college--on the cusp of a whole new life. But at that age, and in such a state of depression, I guess it is hard to have perspective for what is in front of you...

Contemplations

Posted on June 08, 2009
So my little unplanned 3 week vacation has had me thinking. I really like spending more time with my kiddos, cooking real dinners for my family, not having to cram all of my errands and chores into the weekend. And the relief from the constant voice in my head saying I should be working more, working harder, doing something other than whatever I happen to be doing at the moment...

No more teachers . . .

Posted on June 05, 2009
Yesterday was the girls' last day of school. We did the awards ceremonies and then went out of ice cream. It's hard to believe that I now have a 6th grader and 2 3rd graders. I don't feel old enough to have a 6th grader--although my brother, who is 3 years younger, will have a high schooler next year!PS still has friends over who spent the night--they are blessedly past the running around and

Why yes, yes I have been wallowing

Posted on June 03, 2009
This week has been tough. No interviews and no prospects. Yesterday I got a rejection letter from a firm where I thought the interview went really well. I have worked just about every networking contact that I know of. I am beginning to sink into a deep muddy pit of depression...

No napping today

Posted on May 27, 2009
Met with temp agency recruiter. Definitely not the highlight of my day--meeting the recruiter, who was wearing a polyester suit, in a bare-bones windowless office. But they'll help me out with finding a permanent position, and in the meantime, there is a doc review project starting in another week...

I am such a wussie

Posted on May 26, 2009
I got all teary when Sotomayor was talking about her mom. I thought her speech was pretty good, although she was obviously nervous. I will be interested to learn more about her as the confirmation hearings progress. I like that a female Hispanic was nominated, but I don't want to see someone on the Court merely because of her ethnicity or gender (coughPalincough).

Okay, so I may have wallowed a little bit today.

Posted on May 26, 2009
I watched a little too much television. I made good progress through a book (it really seems to be dragging--I am sooo tempted to peek at the end and just get it over with). I took a nap. A temp agency called to set up an interview for a doc review project...

The Great Outdoors

Posted on May 24, 2009
This morning we headed out to go geocaching and hiking at a nature preserve about 40 miles from home. We ended up hiking about 8 miles. I am shocked--we usually get about a mile before the kids are ready to give it up. And the terrain was quite a bit more rugged that we are accustomed to...

Still not wallowing

Posted on May 22, 2009
I've managed to stay remarkably busy for someone who doesn't have a job. In fact, my kitchen still isn't painted. I though I was ready to hit the ground running with the paining on Tuesday, but instead spend half a day taping and draping--a bigger project in the kitchen than in other rooms...

The Ancestral Tree

Posted on May 21, 2009
Today's interview went much better than yesterday's. It is a smaller, start-up firm and seems to be a really great environment. But apparently every firm that I have interviewed with stems from the same great tree. We'll call that tree C & T. I actually had a co-defendant who worked for C & T and mentioned all of the offshoots (groups of partners and associates who left to form their own firms)

Disappointed

Posted on May 20, 2009
I can't say that today's interview went particularly well. Although I perfectly fit the description in the ad that was posted, I would now not even consider this position if I were not unemployed.First, it is coverage work. I have done coverage work and I do not like it...

Today I scheduled two interviews for later in the week

Posted on May 18, 2009
For real jobs, not contract jobs. Woot! One is downtown, a few blocks down from old firm. The other is in the 'burbs, a few blocks down from DH's office.Hopefully one will pan out, but I applied for several contract positions today, just in case.

I will not wallow

Posted on May 18, 2009
I refuse to wallow in a pit of self-pity--which would be oh so easy to do--during my unemployedness and while the girls are still in school. So I got up and started prepping the kitchen for painting. I painted the rest of my downstairs the last time I was unemployed, right after the bar...

The End

Posted on May 15, 2009
Today went well. My secretary ordered a big cookie and invited the office to come say goodbye. (Which in true Cake Wrecks fashion said, "Will Miss You"--I loved it!) It was noted by many that Big Boss would have flipped had he come upon our little get together--which just made it that much better...

Advice for life: Always be nice to everybody

Posted on May 14, 2009
This is something that I tell my kids a lot. Be especially kind to the ones that every one else is not so kind to.I was recently friended on Facebook by a high school classmate. He was a nerdy kid who was pretty much ignored by everyone. We didn't hang out together, but I always tried to be nice to him, and we had all of our honors classes together...

Sitting on my couch.I was up at 4:15 this morning to make a 7:30 flight for an out-of town deposition. I have already billed 9 hours today. Typically, I would be expected to return to the office and put in at least another 4 hours. It was nice to come home...

Done

Posted on May 12, 2009
So, it looks like I am unemployed as of Friday. Partner wouldn't even look at me today (Big Boss was out all day). I think it speaks volumes that my superiors are incapable of being mature and professional while I am continuing to do my job through Friday like I said I would...

Monday did not go well, either.

Posted on May 11, 2009
Today I had to tell my firm whether I would accept their counter offer. When Partner asked, I responded that I would withdraw my resignation assuming we could come to an agreement regarding my hours and salary. He did not think that would be a problem...

I am being held hostage.

Posted on May 10, 2009
Friday did not go well.Big Boss told me that he would talk to the client with the conflict during a planned meeting on Thursday evening. I had my doubts that this would actually happen, because Big Boss is a manipulative, vindictive asshole. Partner attended the meeting with Big Boss, so when I saw Partner on Friday morning, I asked him how the meeting went...

Bitten in the ass by karma

Posted on May 06, 2009

Can I have one more uncomfortable conversation today? Please?

Posted on May 04, 2009
So I turned in my resignation to Big Boss this morning. It was obvious that Partner had already tipped him off. He pretty much just said, "ok, whatever."Well, then he added, "But you know there's a conflict with the X case? I mean, that could be a problem for you...

Good weekend

Posted on May 03, 2009
This weekend has been exactly what I needed--relaxing. The twins had a sleepover Friday night, so it was just PS, DH and I. We thought PS was overdue for some mommy/daddy time, so we went out to dinner and then to a new hangout for bowling, go-cart racing and video gaming...

I'm neck deep in now.

Posted on May 02, 2009
Friday did not go at all the way I intended, but the waiver shouldn't be a problem and I talked to Partner about leaving. I was told that I was up for a big raise and offered more money to stay. I was surprised by how they want to keep me.I was very forthcoming with my reasons for leaving and I think I set off some alarm bells...

Drunk Dialed

Posted on April 30, 2009
I received my first drunk dial from another attorney today. It was from this guy. He left a very long and rambling message at 9:00 Tuesday night. You could hear country music playing in the background. I have no idea what the point was or if he expected me to return his call, but it was entertaining...

So, the case didn't settle.

Posted on April 30, 2009
And I am left to make the big decision.DH is telling me to take the offer.I spoke with an associate at work today about her thoughts on my chances of getting the waiver. It is the first time I have uttered a word to anybody at work. She didn't know if this had ever been an issue in my firm--and recognized the predicament this put me in considering the unpredictability of Big Boss...

A Sticky Pickle

Posted on April 28, 2009
The Good:I got an offer. And it is for more $ than originally contemplated. The Bad:The offer is conditional. Apparently there is a conflict because of a case that I know absolutely nothing about, within another practice group that I do not work with at all, and with attorneys that I rarely see or speak with...

Round 2

Posted on April 27, 2009
I had my second set of interviews this morning, this time with 5 different attorneys. I think it went pretty well. I think I gave the answers they wanted to hear--and they were the truth. I haven't heard anything back from the recruiter yet, but I really didn't expect to today...

Self-Analysis

Posted on April 23, 2009
When I took trial ad in law school we covered a mini-part of a trial in each class section (e.g. the opening statement or cross examination.) We would "perform" in front of our classmates, who would critique our performance, and then we would review a videotape of our own performance with one of the instructors so that we could see our problem areas for ourselves...

A change of fortune

LC and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Did not sleep at all last night. Apparently my husband was replaced by Darth Vader in the middle of the night, and no amount of shoulder punches could make it stop. Crickets Chirping or Are My Neuroses Showing?

Posted on April 19, 2009
The recruiter called me Friday morning to ask how the interview went. I was surprised that she had not heard from the firm. I haven't worked with a recruiter before, but DH has, and he says that they usually speak with the employer very soon after an interview--he has had second interviews scheduled within an hour of leaving a first interview...

Deposition Gold

Posted on April 19, 2009
Friday I took depositions of a corporate rep. and employee in a case that should be straightforward, but is turning into a circus. About 2 minutes in, while working through my standard introductory questions I hit the jackpot. The question: "What did you do to prepare for your deposition today?" The answer, "I just looked through my notes...

Reminder -Secretary's Day is this week

Posted on April 19, 2009
I didn't hear about it until about 3:00 the day before last year, so I thought I'd pass it along. I'm sending my secretary orchids. Last year I did a fruit bouquet, which she seemed to like.

Exhausted

Posted on April 16, 2009

Strange day

Posted on April 09, 2009
I emailed in that I had an appointment and would be late coming into the office. I left the "appointment" part vague and ambiguous, as I always do, which enables it to cover a host of personal issues. My plan was to drive to my office, park at the top of my parking garage where I would get decent cell phone reception, and take the call there so that I could immediately go to work afterward...

The Guilt

Posted on April 08, 2009
So I have a phone interview scheduled tomorrow at 10:00. Which is a pretty inconvenient time as far as not interrupting my work day goes. I'm not quite sure how to handle it. I can 1) go to work and then disappear for an hour to do the interview; or 2) just go into work and say I had an appointment...

Crazy Boss Gem o' the Day

Today is better

Weekend Business

This weekend has been busy, but not overly hectic. Lounged for a bit yesterday morning, then decided to sort through the girls' dressers to evaluate the need for new spring clothes and weed out the outgrown, faded and holey clothes that they always manage to wear whenever I am not around to object...

Nope. I don't have a competitive streak

Posted on March 22, 2009
Is it perverse that I get a thrill when I get to draft a response that pummels the other side? Really, it doesn't happen all that often. And while I enjoy the challenge of the craftily argued motion, it is really more fun to pick apart the other side's motion apart and hammer them into the ground...

I still don't know what's going to happen with the paralegal. Had a meeting with Big Boss and the other attorney. I-again-had to do the rundown of what I had discovered. Big Boss was practically cross-examining me, but I stood my ground. He hinted that perhaps it was my fault that the paralegal's work wasn't double-checked...

Rules for grownups: Fess up your fuck ups

Posted on January 05, 2009
I think one of our paralegals is going to get fired. When I was working on responses to an RFP today I discovered that we had inadvertently produced a duplicate copy of a CD instead of 2 different CDs. So I asked the paralegal who was handling the production to confirm that the bad CDs had, in fact, gone out to all other parties...

MIL's cancer is back. Even though the stupid moronic doctor that she saw a week ago said that there was no sign of cancer. She has already fought off this shit twice--and she's only 53. They said that its too deep to biopsy and plan to start chemo again...

Where to go?

Posted on January 04, 2009
Since we just celebrated our 13th anniversary, DH and I have been discussing what to do for our 15th anniversary. I was in law school for our 10th and finances were tight, so we didn't do anything special. I think we are due for a big trip. The problem is that we are the most un-traveled people in the world...

13 years is a long time.

Posted on December 30, 2008
And today, that's how long I have been married. I've made more than a few bad decisions in my life, but I seemed to do pretty well with picking a spouse. Actually, it's something of a miracle that I managed to find someone who's willing to put up with me! We're keeping it low-key this year--since we been lucky enough to have a few kid-free nights out in recent weeks and, quite frankly, we're

Can't a girl take a day off?

Posted on December 30, 2008
So I took off from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day. Litigation tends to be slow during the holidays, and I know that January is already shaping up to be quite hectic. So I thought I'd take the opportunity to hang out with my girlies (and save the cash that full-day child care would cost...

Home Sweet Home

Posted on December 29, 2008
We survived the trip to Hometown and it was a whirlwind. We spent Friday night with DH's sibs, Saturday morning and afternoon with my dad's family and Saturday night with my mother. Sunday morning we hung out with DH's parents and his sister who was home with a sick baby on Friday, then visited with my mom's parents before heading out of town...

Merry Christmas!

Posted on December 25, 2008
I hope everyone had a joyful holiday. The girlies have been little angels since yesterday afternoon. We went to my uncle's house last night, where my kiddos were the only kids around and they were perfect--even while we were having an adults only gift exchange...

Toothpaste for Santa

Posted on December 25, 2008
We're waiting out the kiddos we can do the Santa thing. I am pooped and really just want to go to bed, but that's not gonna happen any time soon. SS insisted on leaving toothpaste for Santa. Because in the letter he sent, he mentioned that he was packing his toothbrush, but didn't mention toothpaste...

I am the meanest mom in the whole world.

Posted on December 23, 2008
I have been begging, pleading and screaming at my kids for the last two days to clean their rooms. They have been rotten little brats for the last two weeks who completely refuse to do what they are told. And they have a huge case of the gimmes. I refuse to raise bratty kids! I have been so tempted to leave lumps of coal in their stockings this year...

Facebook weirdness

Posted on December 17, 2008
So, being the uncool thirty-something that I am, I have only recently joined Facebook. (Thanks a lot PT--I totally blame you!) Anyway, the first person to request me as a friend came out of the clear blue sky. It was a guy that I knew in high school but wasn't really friends with...

Snow day!

Posted on December 16, 2008
Or rather, ice day. There is not a bit of snow, but the highways are covered in ice so the kids' school canceled classes. (It really seems kind of ridiculous since we live about 4 blocks from school--I know that my brethren in the great white north would laugh if they saw how little it takes to start shutting down schools and government around here!) I am working from home--at least for now...

OMG I feel like I am taking a Contracts exam!

Posted on December 16, 2008
The legal issue that I am working on feels straight out of 1L Contracts. (Have I mentioned that Contracts was my worst class. There is a reason that I am a products liability lawyer, and its because I rocked torts--and my procedure classes, which are very handy for a litigator...

Good news for me!

Posted on December 12, 2008
We got our bonuses this morning--that was enough to make my day a good one. But the office manager also came in my office and told me that I got one of the best bonuses--especially for someone with my level of experience. She said that my supervising attorneys were very complimentary of me and that Partner is the one who suggested my bonus...

The best part of Christmas

Posted on December 12, 2008
Tonight we went shopping for our "angels." DH and I started adopting angels from the Angel Tree when we were in college. It was so much fun to shop for a less fortunate child--especially when we had no children to shop for. Now we let each of our girls pick one child off of the angel tree every year...

I could kill him

Posted on December 11, 2008
My brother, that is. A few weeks ago he got into major trouble. Think of all the really bad things that could happen to you at the same time--financial problems, criminal charges, family issues. Much of it was his own fault--or at least his willful blindness...

The not so fun part of being a lawyer

Posted on December 09, 2008
So, it turns out that I did not get my paralegal in trouble. He got in trouble for taking 3.5 hours to do a task that should have taken 30 minutes. I have known for a while that my supervisors are not especially fond of Paralegal. But 75% of his assignments come directly from me, so I have been doing my best to advise him on how to do better and to protect him from my higher-ups...

Walking the tightrope

Posted on December 07, 2008
I think one of the biggest challenges for new lawyers is learning to balance. And I'm not talking about work vs. life. I mean things like taking initiative versus appearing presumptuous and completing one supervisor's tasks before another's. The first is the biggest challenge for me...

Sucky stuff all around us

MIL has been having lots of trouble with her kidneys lately. They put in a stint about a month ago, but it got blocked so they took it out again. She has continued to be in a great deal of pain, so they went in yesterday to replace the stint and found some kind of blockage in her bladder...

I love the stuff my kids write

We were just going through the kids' school folders and found what must have been TT's Thanksgiving essay: I am thankful for K.V. because she is my best friend in the whole world. And Mrs. B. is the best teacher in the world. And P.M. is also my best friend in the world to...

Does Amazon Still Suck?

Posted on November 30, 2008
My Amazon Sucks post, written about this time last year, is probably my most frequently hit post of all time. It seems a lot of people think Amazon sucks. I have pretty much boycotted Amazon since last year because they pissed me off--but I found a few good deals there this year and decided to give them another shot...

Our Lady of Grace Continues her Reign

Posted on November 30, 2008
So, I recovered from my little incident on Friday, but managed a repeat performance (minus the excruciating injury) this morning. DH and I were leisurely reading the ads in the Sunday paper when he came across the Roboquad in the Target ad for $35. PS has been going on and on about the Roboquad for over a year now...

I spent most of Thanksgiving allowing DH and the Kiddos to wait on me, while supervising DH's preparation of our feast from the sofa. He did a pretty good job for a first-timer (except for his refusal to salt and pepper the mashed potatoes, which led to a rather ridiculous fight...

So, I survived

Posted on November 25, 2008
The gallbladder surgery went much better than I anticipated. I had a tough time with the anesthesia after my ablation a couple of months ago, and I expected to feel like crap most of the day. But they pumped me full of zofran and phenergan (and morphine), and I only had a few minutes of nausea...

Spending my last hours bonding with my gallbladder

Posted on November 24, 2008
Today has been predictably crazy. It was my only day at work this week. The next 6 days will be the most consecutive days I have had off of work since I started there a year ago. (And I haven't told them yet that I have booked a 7 night trip to Disney World this summer!) So this morning I had to go to the hospital for bloodwork...

Last week the twins wrote letters to Santa while they were home with the nanny and promptly put them in the mailbox. We meant to pull them from the mailbox after the girls went to bed, but forgot...

I am beginning to feel overwhelmed. I have been super-busy the last month or so. In fact, I was the top biller in my firm last month (we get statements each month of the most & least hours billed and the average--do all firms do this?) And I'm on track for a repeat performance...

Socializing

Posted on November 08, 2008
This week I met my first MILP. I've never met anyone that I knew through the internet before. Probably because I am inherently non-trusting--but a fellow MILP seemed pretty safe. I May Have Been Given Just Enough Rope to Hang Myself

So remember that list I posted earlier in the week about what I wanted to do in the next year? Well, I may be ticking things off more quickly than I anticipated. On Wednesday, Partner told me that I was taking a corporate rep depo. On Thursday, Partner told me that he wanted to "shift responsibility" for three cases to me...

Today marks the one year anniversary of being a licensed attorney. So I guess tomorrow, I am officially a second-year. A lot has changed in the last year. This time last year, I was wondering if I would ever find a job and if I had just spent a hundred grand on the biggest mistake of my life...

What the hell were their parents thinking?

F.U. Part 2

Posted on October 28, 2008
The little fucker did it again. They finally sent back redlined settlement documents (changing shit they had already agreed to), but didn't copy all parties. So I forwarded their revisions to the rest of the parties along with the corrections I made to the Addendum...

F.U.

Posted on October 26, 2008
I have spent the better part of the last month preparing settlement documents in a big case for a substantial settlement. This was my first time to ever prepare settlement documents, and I was pretty much left to wing it. But I pulled it off. There are 5 parties involved in this settlement, and we had everybody in agreement by the 5th revision--and most of the changes were pretty minor...

Date night --woohoo!

Posted on October 18, 2008
DH and I rarely ever go out without the kids. Because we work long hours and don't spend a lot of time with the kids during the week, we make it a point to spend a lot of family time together in the evening. And we spend enough on childcare that there is not much that will provoke us to drop another $80 or so on a babysitter so we can go out...

The lawyer you don't want to be...

The Chatty Cathy. This is the lawyer who is apparently completely unconcerned about her billables, because she will spend excessively long stretches of time yapping your ear off if given the slightest opportunity. This isn't a friendly co-worker stopping by to say "hi" or to give you the 10 minute run-down on her date last night...

Boss's Day--WTF?

Posted on October 15, 2008
I grabbed a sandwich for lunch and decided to splurge on a cookie from the bakery in the basement of my building. As I approached the line I saw my secretary. I walked up behind her and tried to say something, but she was oblivious to my presence. Before I can catch her attention, she asks the bakery worker--"so what are you going to have available for Boss's day?" I hightail it out of there,

Partly because life has just gotten busy with PS's gymnastics on Monday nights and TT's football practice on Thursday nights and all those other things that get crammed into a week. Partly because it's the time of year where allergies are kicking in and my eyes hurt so badly by the end of the day that I want to scratch them and the thought of looking at a

Sucky, sucky, sucky day

Posted on October 02, 2008
Today just sucked. It was one of those days where everything is just off-kilter all day long. It started this morning, when I had to go into the school to drop the girls off and speak to the cranky ladies in the office. Then traffic sucked. Then I got to work, and before I even make it to my office my secretary informs me that I am on the naughty list...

My car is jinxed

Posted on September 17, 2008
First, it was broken into in my driveway (it is almost always in the garage--a total fluke that it was in the driveway) and DH's fancy HD radio was stolen. Then I got a crack in the windshield coming home from a work trip. Then the driver's side window spontaneously shattered while sitting in my garage overnight...

Every Freakin' Year...

Posted on September 17, 2008
My kids' school, like many schools around the country, have subscribed to the AR reading system. Basically, they test at the beginning of the year to determine their AR reading level. Then they are required to read books on their assigned AR level and take 10 question quizzes which allegedly test their comprehension (I have my doubts)...

Parties and Projects

Posted on September 14, 2008
My Sunday is being spent helping the twins with a school project and prepping for PS's upcoming birthday party. PS really wanted to go to a super-touristy spot that was going to cost a fortune to take even a couple of friends. I told her that if we did that she could only take 2 friends, and it would take all of the money that I budgeted to spend on her birthday, meaning no big presents...

Feeling Crappy

Posted on September 05, 2008
I had my endometrial ablation today. Accounts on the internet had led me to believe that this would be an easy breezy procedure and that I would be feeling great by dinner-time. Not so much. I am much crampier than I anticipated. I had a D&C following a miscarriage a few years ago, and asked the doctor if recovery would be similar...

PSA - Watch out for your kiddos on your outdoor playsets

Posted on September 01, 2008
Much has been made on the news this summer about the heat that can gather in playground equipment. I had kept the girls indoors during the extreme heat, but yesterday morning, I wasn't even thinking about anything happening. PS's BFF got about a 2" square burn on her lower back/butt when she was over here yesterday --from going down the slide in my backyard!! She was wearing thin pajama shorts

Sometimes I feel like my life is a sitcom

Busy day

Posted on August 28, 2008
After a slow start to the week, the last couple of days have been insanely busy at work. There may be layoffs everywhere else, but my firm has been hiring like crazy to keep with all of the new cases we have been taking on. TT had her first football practice today...

My football girl

Posted on August 24, 2008
DH took TT to buy a football yesterday, and she has been carrying the thing around ever since. I have to say, she never showed so much enthusiasm for soccer. We are not a family known for its athleticism. DH and I are not jocks by any stretch of the imagination--although all of our parents were pretty athletic...

Nintendo CS is awesome!

We came home today to find the wii completely dead--no power at all. Tried turning it off and on and then tried unplugging it for a bit. Nothing. We were already mourning the loss of our beloved wii when I found the cs 800 number in the back of the owner's manual...

Interesting Day

Meanest mom in the whole world

At least that's how I feel today. We loaded up all the kitties and met a couple of people to adopt them out today. Unfortunately, the first two that we adopted out were PS's favorites. I didn't think it was a big deal, because she has really taken care of and played with them all...

Free kittens to good homes.

Insane Week

It has been a late night every day this week. Big Boss has been out of town a lot lately, but now he is back and throwing stuff at me left and right. A lawyer's thoughts on lawyers

If you wish hard enough, sometimes your dreams do come true

PS is obsessed with cats. She talks all the time about getting a cat. She has cat posters all over her room. When we went to the library this week, she got books all about cats. So she pretty much thought it was Christmas morning when one of the neighbors knocked on the door to tell us that something was screaming in our flowerbeds...

Our Grand Plan

Posted on June 09, 2008
We noticed the mama cat wandering around and decided that it would be best for her to take care of her babies. Except that we think she is feral, and we didn't want her to just come and take the babies, because we didn't know where she would take them and we didn't want the babies to die in the cool weather and rain...

Decisions

One Year Later

It?s been a year since I graduated from law school. I can?t say that the last year was an easy one. The joy of both graduating from law school and passing the bar were seriously mitigated by the stress of not having a job. Although I loved law school and knew that I was in the right career, there were moments when I wondered if I had made the biggest mistake of my life...

"You're the most in charge 'cause you're the one who gave birth to us"

Posted on May 11, 2008
Said SS yesterday. We were in the used bookstore and found the motherload of clearance children's books. Each of my kiddos had a stack of 6-8 books when TT piped up and said, "we better stop, Daddy might not like us getting all these books." To which I responded, "why do we have to have Daddy's permission to buy books?" To which SS said, "Yeah, you're the most in charge 'cause you're the one

Just Ewwww

Both yesterday and today while I was doing research on two completely different cases, with completely different issues, and in completely different jurisdictions I came across cases involving decomposing mice in coke bottles--that someone actually drank from...

Baby Cravings

Posted on May 05, 2008
I have been having huge baby cravings for the past few months. I miss having babies--I loved it when my girls were little and sweet and loved to snuggle with mommy. They are all getting so big now. My twins are still loving and snugly sometimes, but they are also growing into wonderful and hilarious little people...

A day in the life of a first year attorney

Posted on May 01, 2008
Today was crazy. It started out having to break it to my boss that it was going to take another $600 to close a deal we thought we were done with. I thought my head might roll, because I was pretty much responsible for everything--although this issue was truly beyond my control...

Peanut Butter & Saltines

Posted on April 30, 2008
I happened upon someone eating this for lunch today and I am 89% certain that its because she couldn't afford anything else. Which stirred up some strange feelings for me--because this person reminds me of how I grew up. I remember taking crackers and peanut butter for lunch to school because there was nothing else in the house to eat and my mom didn't have lunch money for me...

Old and Cranky

Posted on April 28, 2008
So the Supreme Court decided today that it's ok to ID people trying to vote in the presidential election, and apparently my PTA decided to go along. Yep, I was carded tonight trying to get into my 1st Graders annual Spring Melody Presentation. Because it was a thinly veiled guise to get enough parents in the building to hold the PTA elections...

Life

Posted on April 26, 2008
Got my whopping $51 back from Uncle Sam yesterday . . . and already spent it on dinner last night. But we have been doing pretty well with our cutbacks on food spending. We have limited our eating out to the weekends and I have been taking lunch to work about 4 days a week...

FYI-Tomorrow is Secretaries Day

Posted on April 22, 2008
I did not realize this until mid-afternoon today, so I had not done anything for my secretary. (And have I mentioned that having a secretary is really cool?) I've never had a secretary before so I am pretty clueless about what to get and how much to spend...

Holy F'ing Crap

Posted on April 19, 2008
I just saw on my news reader that I case that I worked on for a firm that I clerked for in law school just resulted in an $87 million verdict. I knew the case was worth big money when I worked on it, but I wasn't really expecting that big. I can't even believe it already went to trial--it was in the discovery phase when I worked on it, and that was just about 15 month ago...

Will Travel for Food

Posted on April 18, 2008
So Big Boss came in my office today to find out if I was amenable to attending a hearing in Washington D.C. next month--a three week hearing. The office is spread pretty thin lately, with weekly hearings on the other side of the country and a few other cases that are about to explode...

Worker's Comp for Lawyers

Posted on April 17, 2008
When I was hired I smart-assedly laughed at the worker's comp coverage, thinking "what am I gonna do--get a papercut?" But now I've figured it out--the law is going to drive me blind. I started getting dry-itchy eyes when I was studying for the LSAT...

...or so I thought

Posted on April 15, 2008
I filed my taxes last night and thought I was done. Until I got to work this morning and found the email from the IRS stating that my return had been rejected. Shit. Of course I had done my taxes on my home computer and had no access to have a look-see to figure out where I screwed up...

$51 and I'm out.

Posted on April 14, 2008
Yes, I just filed my tax return. I have never waited this long before. We are getting a whopping $51 back, and I am just happy that we are not paying anything. Especially considering all of the previously untaxed earnings from my contract work.

Fighting-ugh!

Posted on April 10, 2008
DH and I just had a huge blow-out and there appears to be no resolution in sight. He is a web developer. That is his day job, but he occasionally takes on contract projects on the side. He recent did a project that took a fairly short amount of time and paid a pretty significant amount of money...

Budgeting

Posted on April 05, 2008
DH and I finally sat down and prepared a budget. This is something that we couldn't really do before because my income fluctuated so much. But now it is set and we have a real idea of what our monthly income is. Although our income has essentially doubled since I started working, our expenses are significantly higher, too...

How I'm spending my Sunday

Posted on March 30, 2008
I'm writing a paper to be presented by my boss at a big important conference that will be attended by lots of big important people. The working title is "The Most Boring Paper on the Planet." It is due Tuesday. I have known about it for about 3 weeks...

This is how brilliant I am

Posted on March 27, 2008
I was supposed to have my picture made for the firm website today. And I had a client meeting (woohoo, yes I am actually getting to meet with clients now). So I put in an effort to wear my favorite suit and pearls. Halfway to work I realized that I had only put on half my makeup...

Recharging

Posted on March 23, 2008
Saturday was the first day that I have had off in 3 weeks and it was much needed. I have been billing 60 hours + lately, and all of the travel last week left me exhausted. Tuesday I left the house at 6 and drove 4 hours to close a deal. Met with the appropriate people, drove another hour to the bank and then 5 hours back home in terrible pounding thunderstorms...

Who knew snow globes were a security threat?

Posted on March 18, 2008
I haven't flown in a while, so, since I have a business trip tomorrow and would prefer not to check my luggage, I went to the TSA site to make sure I would my makeup in my carry-on bag. The list of prohibited items is pretty entertaining. Please leave your blow torches and hand grenades at home...

Holy cow

Posted on March 17, 2008
The whole office has been crazy busy with the big new case. Good news for me in that I am getting plenty of hours and the opportunity to work on a really big case--even though my work is basically all in the background. But it also means that my supervising attorneys are so busy wrangling Really Big Case that some of the smaller stuff is being punted to me...

Its midnight, do you know where LC is?

Posted on March 16, 2008
Blogging in the bathtub. Don't worry, there's no water in it. But my house is bursting with company and I didn't want to keep DH up, and so here I am. I'm just not tired. Don't ask me why. I worked all day at the office and will probably need to put in some time from home tomorrow...

Life is mostly good

Posted on March 12, 2008
Thanks for all the congrats! Everyone at the firm has been very nice and happy that I am finally sticking around. But I have been so busy. We got a big case that is getting a lot of attention. The good news is that I am having no problems getting my billables right now...

Party at LC's place

Posted on March 10, 2008
It's official--I have a job. (9.75 months after graduation) They made the offer today and I will switch from contract to associate on the 15th. It is such a huge relief to finally have some degree of security. (Now I just have to worry about keeping up with my billables...

Rite of Passage

Posted on March 09, 2008
I worked 12 hours straight yesterday (yes, that would be Saturday). And I'm going back today. It sort of seems overdue. What kind of lawyer doesn't have to lose an entire weekend every once in a while. But I did have a bad mommy moment. When I explained to TT that I had to work yesterday, I watched her face scrunch up with worry as she said, "But it's Saturday...

The world revolves around families of 4

Posted on March 09, 2008
Which is irritating when you are a family of five. Most restaurants can easily accommodate 4, but with 5 they feel like they have to seat you at a giant table for which you have to wait an extra 15 minutes. (I have learned to tell the hosts that, because my children are small, we can fit into a standard size booth...

So...

Posted on March 07, 2008
Today I sent the reminder email to Big Boss (per his instructions) that my (3rd) 30 days is up. Although I am anxious to end my perpetual contract worker status, I didn't really want to do this today because the timing is terrible. Big Boss is having a medical procedure next week which will keep him out of the office for a while and he is trying to wrap everything up...

Did I jinx myself?

Posted on March 03, 2008
I hired a housekeeper--yea! My inlaws are coming in two weeks and the serious cleaning has been seriously overlooked, so their impending visit pushed me to find somebody. I've needed someone for a while--it's just so much trouble to go find and hire someone...
