Tulane University: The Katrina Class

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
My first week at Tulane was the week of September 11, 2001.

My first week of law school was Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Needless to say I'm pretty awesome at attending the first few weeks of classes in a zombie-like state.

It wasn't awesome to get this email from the Dean my first week of law school:

In reviewing the College of Law records we determined that you either
attended college in the region affected by Hurricane Katrina or may have
lived in that area and/or have family that lived in that area.  If you
or any family or friends have been personally affected by Hurricane
Katrina, please know that XXX University and the College of Law are
here to help. Please know that all of us at XXX are deeply saddened by
this tragedy and would like to help in any way we can.  Please call on
us if you need us at any time during the school year.

Just like I boarded a commercial airliner the day the FAA allowed civilian travel after September 11, I went back to New Orleans the January after Katrina and gutted homes for a week. It was some of the hardest most back-breaking work I've ever done. It smelled, it was rotten, there were animal carcasses and filth for miles. That said, I'd do it again. I'll continue to spend my money there, to support New Orleans, to attend Mardi Gras & Jazzfest and simply sit on a porch and drink in the sultry air while enjoying a crawfish or fifty and a cold Abita beer.

This video reminds me why I went to Tulane - why I'm so incredibly proud of my degree from Tulane- and why I know what it means to miss New Orleans:

I can't wait to go back.  I can't wait to get a home in Uptown or the Garden District with a front porch and big oak trees and a small spot to park the car. I can't wait to hear the rumble of the trolley as I drift off to sleep and to know that a long Friday lunch at Galatoires in sundresses and fancy hats is only a reservation away. I can't wait to be back in the city that is part of my soul...or at the very least is holding some of it hostage.

I just need to figure out how to convince BISMOW that the week long, Napoleonic code based Lousiana bar exam is no big thing.
