BISMOW & I bought a lottery ticket this past weekend. After a stroke of good luck we decided to push that luck a little further and we purchased a ticket. We had a fun time discussing what we would do- and what we wouldn't do- with such a sudden windfall of money. First we'd take care of the boring thing- debt. We'd pay it all off, 100%, and close our current credit card down in favor of a high end American Express card. We'd probably buy the condo we are renting and swap out the appliances for Viking or Wolf. Then we'd pay for our honeymoon & invest the rest. Some of the investment would go to Baby Z's education and that of any kids we might have, and the rest would accrue interest to live off of. We'd keep our jobs and go by the idea of "never touch the principal only your interest" and see where life took us.* Not particularly fascinating (unless of course the Viking range does it for you too, and in that case, hot damn!) but certainly exciting. Exciting enough that my eyes grew wide with the idea of freedom from our bills- law school loans can be incredibly daunting & crippling, especially when multiplied by two. Of course when I checked the ticket today, we hadn't won. Not even the any of the lower-tier prizes that get you a check for $2, enough to give you back a little less than half of your buy-in. A twinge of regret went through me when I realized that this pipe dream wasn't meant to be. Then I realized the money was never really mine, it was a gamble -albeit a small one. I'm not sure if the thrill and delight of imagining what I'd do with the prize money is enough to justify that little ache that replaces it when you realize, yet again, you'll be making that monthly payment to The Man.
If you won what would you do?
* Ok fine I'd probably get a pair or two of Manolo's
* * And probably some new cardigans from JCrew
* * * And we'd probably get nicer sheets but thats because I'm a sucker for expensive linens
* * * * But we wouldn't get a new car because we are currently at an American v. Foreign impasse that might never be solved
