Barney Frank Has Some Good Lines

Posted on December 06, 2008
Re Obama's comment that he will defer to Bush until his inauguration because there is only "one President at a time."?I?m a great fan of the president-elect, but I think it?s probably the case that he?s going to have to be more assertive than he?s been,? Frank said, addressing the Consumer Federation of America?s annual financial services conference...

Bonds's Lawyers Ain't too Shabby

Posted on December 06, 2008
They originally gotten several counts dismissed; but the judge let the federal prosecutors amend the faulty indictment. But apparently it was still faulty, and what was once 14 charges is now down to ten, with no charges of perjury.Federal prosecutors dropped four counts of lying to a grand jury against Barry Bonds, leaving him to face trial next year on 10 counts of making false statements plus an addition obstruction of justice charge...

Tragedy on Black Friday

Posted on November 28, 2008
The trampling death of a Wal-Mart employee and a possible miscarriage at a Long Island store (pictured below) during the post-Thanksgiving sales frenzy. Unbelievable.UPDATE: 11:30am PST: The madness is apparently on the West Coast as well.

Happy Thanksgiving

Posted on November 25, 2008
From Slate's Explainer:How do turkeys breed? With a little help from their human friends. The vast majority of turkeys sold in the United States are of the white broad-breasted variety. These birds have been bred to produce as much white breast meat as possible, resulting in males so large and unwieldy that they can't properly mount the females...

Drinking Anarchically

Posted on November 24, 2008
This is sort of the libertarian equivalent of the "drinking liberally" groups that have sprouted up recently. The invitation looks very inclusive, even if I might be a little more exclusive (no 9-11 truthers welcome). In any event, I'll likely attend, and hope to see you there.

Don't Do Interviews in Front of Animals Being Slaughtered

Posted on November 21, 2008
Wow.While the GOP vice presidential nominee talked politics after pardoning a turkey for Thanksgiving, the camera caught workers slaughtering turkeys in the background.Really? No one flagged this? Doesn't she have media people? Amazing.

The sequel to Sloths is only about half as good as the original. Still, it's worth a view.

Opposing violence against Prop 8 Supporters

Posted on November 19, 2008
Here's a good op-ed in the SF Chronicle:[T]hose who oppose the ban should draw the line at excesses: curse-filled picket lines at churches, racial-tinged confrontations and personalized boycotts aimed at opponents of same-sex marriage. These actions deny civil rights, invite violence, and ignore the options that may restore same-sex unions...

Missouri Called

Posted on November 19, 2008
The Presidential election is over. Missouri has been called for McCain.Final EV tally: 365 Obama, 173 McCain. McCain came a measely 97 votes away from the presidency. For the Republican to win the presidency in 2012, assuming a shift of 5 electoral votes toward more populous red states where birth rates are increasing, that candidate will have to flip: Florida, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Colorado...

I Kissed a Girl

Posted on November 19, 2008
Katy Perry is a hot ticket item lately. First "I kissed a girl," now "Hot and Cold."ET has noticed a subtle problem with these two songs though -- when Perry complains, in her song "Hot and Cold," that her boyfriend can't make up his mind about his feelings about her, you can hardly blame him...

Lieberman in 2012

Posted on November 19, 2008
Lieberman is safe for now. But he may want to start thinking about his re-election in 2012. To that end, probably best to take seriously the advice of people at DailyKos.It's time for Joe Lieberman to tap his fundraising network for the benefit of Martin as his runoff election approaches, and do whatever else the Martin campaign asks of him to help a Democrat get elected to the U...

Just Like Old Times

Posted on November 18, 2008
John McCain was never "not the John McCain" his Democratic colleagues "once knew." He continued to me that man throughout the presidential campaign, and remains that man. And his friends are still his friends."John, wait up," called Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass...

Violent Anti-Prop 8 Protestors Aren't Cool

Posted on November 18, 2008
Yeah, this is good PR. Violently assaulting and threatening your opponents with death will win people over for 2010.I think the protestors are starting to understand:We've got the moral upper hand in this fight and every day more and more people see that...

Lieberman is safe. See my prediction here.Obama saved him. See my prediction here. And good for Lieberman to give a shout out to Obama for saving him.

Obama's Ego

Posted on November 10, 2008
I tend to judge people with monster egos harshly, except when their massive egos are entirely justified. This passage from the article "How Obama Won":Obama, who is not without an ego, regarded himself as just as gifted as his top strategists in the art and practice of politics...

Lieberman's Syllogism

Posted on November 10, 2008
Premise A: Lieberman will split from the Dem caucus if stripped of his chairmanships.Premise B: Obama wants Lieberman to stay in the caucus. Conclusion: Lieberman is safe.If Lieberman were to continue caucusing with the Democrats without being punished for his campaign conduct -- Democrats say he broke a promise not to campaign negatively against Obama -- the progressive community will undoubtedly be up in arms...

Dodd, Lieberman, Obama, and Martin

Posted on November 09, 2008
More ideas for Lieberman to stay in the Dem caucus.1. Lieberman still has friends in the Democratic caucus. Like Chris Dodd, his colleague in the Connecticut Senate:"[Obama's] talked about reconciliation, healing, bringing people together. I don't think he'd necessarily want to spend the first month of this president-elect period, this transition period, talking about a Senate seat, particularly if someone is willing to come forward and is willing to be a member of your family in the caucus in that sense...

Reid: I'm Fighting For Lieberman

Posted on November 09, 2008
Good news for Lieberman, if it's true:Reid said it was up to the Democratic caucus to make any decision about Lieberman's future, noting that, "Quite frankly, I don't like what he did." But he pointed out that Lieberman has supported Democrats on most issues, including an important budget vote earlier this year...

Prediction: Obama Saves Lieberman

Posted on November 07, 2008
Lieberman's chairmanships are on the line now that the Dems have at least 57 seats in the Senate.Reid is leaning toward taking them away. But I like the theory that Obama will intervene and save Joe the Lieberman from losing these positions. After all, it fits perfectly with the Obama message of healing and cooperation...

Obama FAIL

Posted on November 07, 2008
Barrels of ink will be spilled over the next four years exploring whether Barack Obama has delivered on his promise of CHANGE. Not change, not even Change. But something nobler, grander, and lasting. In my view, Obama has failed in this regard unless he delivers widespread, lasting ethics reform...

Obama Victorious

Posted on November 05, 2008
As you've heard. Others will dwell better on the significance. But one must imagine the President-Elect, in quiet moments, identifying with FDR:On the night of his landslide victory over Hoover, in 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, Roosevelt had an intimate conversation with his son James:?You know, Jimmy,? Franklin said, ?all my life I have been afraid of only one thing?fire...

"One Anecdote"

Posted on November 05, 2008
Here is an account of DH's Obama experience last night in Oakland, CA:One anecdote. I was at a 95% black event in downtown Oakland. A BBQ place. By the end, there were at least a thousand people there. We all crowded around the screen. When Obama got past 270, everyone was crying...
