McKesson Corp. to pay $13.25 million settlement in drug abuse lawsuit.

Pittsburgh, PA: (May-26-08) The US Drug Enforcement Administration brought a civil lawsuit against McKesson Corp., a giant San Francisco-based drug and medical products distribution company, related to the distribution of its lifestyle dugs such as alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug, and hydrocodone, a narcotic pain reliever. The suit was filed after the company came under intense scrutiny by the Drug Enforcement Administration, after federal officials stated that the drugs had a potential for abuse.

Officials on both sides said that the parties had reached a settlement agreement, in which the company will pay $13.25 million to resolve all claims. The settlement resolves all federal claims against McKesson, and calls for a temporary suspension of distribution of the two drugs from two of its 31 distribution centers. Sources stated that shipments to affected pharmacies will be handled by other McKesson sites. Though the company agreed to settle, it did not agree to any liability or admit any wrongdoing. McKesson officials said that the US Attorneys' offices involved in the settlement are in CA, CO, FL, MD, TX and UT.
