Se define la discriminación como tratamiento injusto de una persona o de un grupo basado en prejudicar o el juicio injusto. Ejemplos de los casos de la discriminación:

- Discriminación racial o nacional del origen: tratamiento injusto basado en características de su raza o lugar del nacimiento, características físicas, lengua, cultura, o ascendencia.
- Discriminación religiosa: discriminación basada en su creencia o prácticas religiosas. La Comisión de posibilidad de empleo del igual (EEOC) indica que ésta es la segunda clase de discriminación que más rápidamente creciente.
- Discriminación de edad: discriminación contra una persona o un grupo basado en edad, típicamente contra los ancianos.
- Género o discriminación de orientación sexual: tratamiento injusto de un individuo o de un grupo basado en prejudicar hacia su género u orientación sexual.
- Discriminación de la inhabilidad: discriminación contra las inhabilidades de una persona, incluyendo la comprobación, mental, e incapacidades de aprendizaje o enfermedades crónicas.
- Discriminación del embarazo: tratamiento injusto de mujeres en el lugar de trabajo donde la seguridad de empleo, las promociones, y los salarios a riesgo, durante, o después de embarazo. El EEOC indica que ésta es la clase mayor y más rápidamente creciente de la discriminación.
- Discriminación del precio: Cobrándoles diferentes precios a diversos individuos o grupos por el mismo producto o servicio.
- Discriminación reversa: tratamiento injusto de un individuo o de un grupo que está tradicionalmente en la mayoría.
Leyes Contra la Discriminación
A través de la historia de los E.E.U.U. el gobierno ha pasado actos múltiples para prevenir la discriminación:- Acto de las derechas civiles de 1964 la primera de muchas legislaciones que prohíben la discriminación basada en la raza, el color, la religión, el género, o el origen nacional.
- Discriminación de edad en el acto del empleo de 1967 - protege a personas 40 años o mayores contra la discriminación de empleo y también fija las pautas para las ventajas y las pensiones del empleo.
- Acto de las derechas civiles de 1968 - prohíbe cualquier discriminación (raza, religión, sexo, desventaja, estado de familia y origen nacional) para afectar la venta, el alquiler o el financiamiento de viviendas.
- Acto de la discriminación del embarazo de 1978 - protege a mujeres contra ser despedidas de empleo o negadas consideración para empleo o las promociones debido a un embarazo actual o futuro.
- Acto de Americanos con Las Inhabilidades de 1990 - prohíbe la discriminación basada en la inhabilidad de un individuo. Esta ley protege a ésos con inhabilidades físicas y mentales y enfermedades crónicas tales como cáncer, HIV/AIDS, o epilepsia.
