$125,000 settlement reached in infant neglect lawsuit.

Harrisburg, PA: (Feb-07-08) Patricia Shope brought a lawsuit against the department of Children and Youth Services (CYS) in Lancaster County, after her baby Breyonna, was taken by the agency and fell ill. Medical records showed that Breyonna visited the doctor for ear aches about a dozen times. The suit claimed that despite the proof, CYS kept the baby for nearly two months from her family. The suit was filed after the family got her back, claiming that the baby had been to the doctor too many times in the course of a year.

A settlement had been reached by the parties, in which the Children and Youth Services agreed to pay Shope $125,000, resolving the lawsuit. Agency spokespersons stated that the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing, but an effort to avoid costly litigation. Following the deal, the state board that oversees these agencies put new regulations in place to keep situations like this from happening again. [WHP TV NEWS: INFANT NEGLECT]
