new and old
Posted on October 01, 2009So I started a new job. The transition was expected?I’ve been waiting to start this job for over a year now, in fact?and it’s been pretty smooth so far. The biggest change is that I get up every day knowing exactly what I’m supposed to do that day...
bistro dinner
Posted on August 06, 2009Somehow I managed to pull off a major win tonight with dinner. Skirt steak, green beans, and mashed potatoes doesn’t sound all that groundbreaking?or even interesting?but it managed to kind of be both. First, I marinated the skirt steak for about half an hour, maybe a touch longer, in a mixture of lime juice (2 [...
keeping busy on a Sunday afternoon
Posted on July 26, 2009I made a dress today. My first dress! It turned out pretty good. The pattern is Simplicity 3875 (otherwise referred to as the Duro Junior.) I didn’t make the more traditional Duro view; I made the v-neck with the crossover banding. Here’s what I learned: My pattern was the wrong size, so I [...
dessert is a good thing
Posted on July 25, 2009Also, I made soufflés tonight. We had a sweet tooth. Buttered and sugared ramekins: Melted chocolate: This recipe always makes THREE, not TWO. One of these days I’ll remember that. The reason this is a problem tonight is that I doubled the original recipe because the ramekins I currently have are 2 cup ramekins, not [...
finished!
Posted on July 25, 2009I finally finished my skirt, and I have to say, it didn’t turn out too badly. The zipper is still completely messed up, and the trim is slightly uneven, but overall, I think it turned out pretty cute. Next up: a cute sundress in a fun sunflowery fabric...
something fancy for dinner
Posted on July 18, 2009I live in a great city for meat. Despite that, I’ve never bought meat anywhere but at the local grocery store or Whole Foods. The former has a pretty terrible selection and the quality isn’t terrific; the latter is just too damn expensive for every day...
Friday night cocktail
Posted on July 17, 2009It hasn’t been a bad week; things are picking up a bit at work, and I’m still feeling flush with the success of last weekend’s skirt making. I wanted to keep the good going, so I’ve spent tonight doing things I enjoy: watching trash movies and having a cocktail...
working with my hands
Posted on July 13, 2009Snapping out of a funk is sometimes as simple as doing something with your hands. Being in a funk, I decided to do something with my hands–but something that would not cause me to gain weight, as my favorite hands-on hobby, cooking, tends to do...
Gloomy ruminations
Posted on July 11, 2009So it’s been a while. I’m still here. I’m wanting to write again, but there’s not much I can say right now. Work is verboten and there’s not much going on in my life besides work. That’s not to say I’m crazy busy?indeed, my schedule is very manageable...
Finally!
Posted on April 11, 2009I have been pretty busy the last few weeks so haven’t been keeping up with Joss Whedon’s new show, Dollhouse. This morning I am watching the backlog of episodes, starting with the seventh, I guess. That’s one after the show stopped being boring and started having an arc and some actual good dialog (aka, witty [...
congruence
Posted on April 06, 2009It’s nice when things come around. I’m working on a case right now that involves a law in my state that was the basis for my 1L legal writing memo. Even better, the client is extremely cost-sensitive, making me the absolute perfect person to be working on this case, since I’ve already done [...
tired and struggling
Posted on March 24, 2009When it rains, it pours. And I really mean it. Two weeks ago, I got staffed on something that I was told would be blowing up in our faces over the following six weeks. Immediately after that, a long-term matter I’m on also went into overdrive, headed for a filing deadline in, yes, about [...

Posted on March 10, 2009In a final, desperate attempt to lose that summer associate weight (god, almost two years later), I caved and did something I have never, ever done. I bought an exercise video. Namely, the 30-Day Shred. I thought I was in decent shape, even if a little flabby and a few pounds too heavy...
somebody’s got a case of the Mondays!
Posted on March 09, 2009I think God has a finely tuned sense of humor. Or at least, he enjoys irony. Yesterday, our landlord emailed us asking if we thought we’d be renewing our lease. We spent some time crafting a response to her, opening up a negotiation. We’d like our rent to go back to the original [...
football snacks
Posted on February 01, 2009My best friend’s mom (and my best friend, for that matter) make this excellent dip called prairie fire, and I gave it a whirl tonight for the Super Bowl. Their recipe calls for using New Orleans style red beans, because they’re from Louisiana...
dinner tonight
Posted on January 21, 2009The only thing left in the fridge tonight was pork chops. Good ones, from Whole Foods, but still, pork chops. I was a little later getting home tonight, so I didn’t have a ton of time to cook anything, and with pork chops, there’s always a big risk of a fast cooking method causing [...
disaster.
Posted on January 19, 2009I suppose there is no chance that they won’t completely screw this up.
food with pictures!
Posted on January 19, 2009I made braised short ribs again tonight. This time, I used boneless short ribs, substituted cremini mushrooms for the carrots, and used fresh rosemary instead of dried thyme. It turned out nicely, but not as flavorful as the last batch. Thankfully, short ribs are cheap, so I can keep trying this! I also [...
food is good
Posted on January 09, 2009I haven’t sewn anything in a while?I’m waiting on a new order of fabric to finally make myself a rockin’ tote bag?so I don’t have any new crafty things to post about. But I do have food to post about. I decided to branch out from my usual weeknight cooking this week, and bought some beef short [...
Happy New Year!
Posted on January 01, 2009Every year, Mr. Angst and I have a special New Year’s brunch at home?eggs benedict, mimosas, and cafe au lait.[1] We have our own special way of making the eggs benedict, though. A now-closed restaurant in our old hometown used to make what they called eggs commodore: poached egg and hollandaise, yes, but [...
Last crafty post of the year
Posted on December 31, 2008I made the last bag of 2008 tonight. Also, my mother opened her birthday present early?the penultimate bag of 2008, as it turns out?so I thought I’d go ahead and post pictures of them. Mom’s bag is rather big, made of very similar fabric as the brown one I made for my sister-in-law...
crafty success update
Posted on December 26, 2008Nephew’s hat was too small. Kid has a big head! Luckily, my mother-in-law has a sewing machine, so we stopped by a fabric store down the road, picked up a remnant of fleece pretty much the same color as the original hat, and I made a new one...
holiday travel blues
Posted on December 24, 2008Bad weather is never a good thing, but it’s even worse when it coincides with the holidays. Mr. Angst and I are anxiously watching the radar in advance of our drive to the Angst-in-laws’; I have friends currently stuck in a variety of airports, wondering if they’ll be spending Christmas alone instead of with [...
pictures, at long last
Posted on December 21, 2008I promised pictures! Here, first, is the froggie. There’s nothing posed with them to indicate size, but the body (sans legs) is about 5 inches long. Second, this is the bag with the lining that I LOVE. Here is the adorable hat I made for my nephew...
more with the making of things
Posted on December 20, 2008As much as I complain about my Saturdays being taken up with stuff, I would rather be busy than sitting on the couch trying to figure out what TV to watch. To wit, today I got up, went to yoga, made lunch (migas! yum!), dashed out to Target (in the snow, no less), and [...
squee!
Posted on December 17, 2008I am pulling within shooting distance of being done with Christmas gift-making. I finished the first of the nephew-bound stuffed animals?a cute little froggie, of which I will post pictures sometime. In order to finish it, I had to take a quick after-work trip to the craft store, though, and left with twelve [...
success!
Posted on December 06, 2008I made a bag today. I’m pretty proud of it. Despite a few mishaps (like the lining not lining up with the outer bag at the corners, and completely missing the lining while doing my topstitch), it turned out pretty nicely. Of course, it’s also about 65% of the size I thought [...
painstaking
Posted on November 19, 2008The only problem with hemming your own pants is how damn painstaking it is. I have a machine that will do a blind hem stitch, but it’s damn hard to do that on a heavy pant, like a denim trouser. Frankly, it’s hard to do on a pant hem generally, nevermind the fabric, [...
a different kind of success
Posted on November 16, 2008Last month, I bought a cute, short-sleeved cardigan on sale. It didn’t fit all that well?like a lot of ready-to-wear clothes, it was too baggy in the waist for my body, adding 10 pounds to my frame. But it was $10, so I bought it anyway, thinking it might be OK as a [...
updates
Posted on October 03, 2008I haven’t updated in a while. So here’s what’s going on. First, I started work this week. That entailed lots of orientation sessions involving things like benefits, computer systems, and cost-effective online research, getting my office set up, and jumping into a kick-ass first assignment that I LOVE LOVE LOVE but that will probably have [...
quick Monday night saute
Posted on September 15, 2008I didn’t feel like doing the grocery shopping after choir yesterday (and I had plans to eat with friends, so I didn’t want to be late), so I shopped today after work instead. Since I was running short on time to make dinner when I got home, I threw something together on a whim...
is this a message?
Posted on September 10, 2008My solitaire game has suddenly started giving me two sixes of diamonds, and no nine of diamonds. I do not understand it but the problem has persisted through a couple of reboots. I don’t play enough solitaire to make it worth any more dramatic troubleshooting measures, but I’ll admit that I’m a bit [...

Posted on September 09, 2008If anyone has insight… How does one go about doing extensive research for an academic-style paper without unlimited and free Westlaw and Lexis access? (I’m not looking for someone to say, “Go to the books!” One, I have no time for that and two, my topic isn’t caselaw based...
thoughts on publication
Posted on September 08, 2008After some helpful advice (thank you, ^k^, I don’t know why I didn’t ask The Boy first), and some close rereading of emails, I chose the offer I wanted to accept, and did. Now all I have to do is sign and send back the publication agreement...
advice that I am actually a little embarrassed to ask for
Posted on September 04, 2008So I have a problem, which is not really a problem, and I sort of hesitate to even post about it because I hate when people do this kind of thing, but I genuinely want advice and I’m not posting this as a means of being falsely modest or getting people to shower me with [...

Posted on August 13, 2008. . . aaaaand I just got my first student loan bill. Hi, splash of real-life cold water in the face.
ready or not?
Posted on August 11, 2008I’m back from my vacation, (pretty) rested, tan, and, to be honest, a little at a loss. I’m currently sitting on my couch watching the Olympics, catching up on news and blogs, and feeling a little nervous, like I should be doing something else...
post-bar wrapup
Posted on August 01, 2008I am human again. After consuming not-too-much-wine on Wednesday night, I fell into bed at midnight, but woke up promptly at, yes, you guessed it, 6 am. I rolled over and went back to sleep, but it wasn’t a very good sleep, and I was up by 8. Which was OK...
bar over, sober fail
Posted on July 30, 2008So I’m done with the bar. I’ve consumed approximately 1/3 (give or take) of each of two bottles of wine (which I guess is 2/3 give or take of ONE bottle of wine), a very good steak[1], and now I have nothing to do but laze around until tomorrow at about 10:30 when I [...
things that bug me enough to blog about them when I’m also in the middle of the bar

TGIF, for seriousness
Posted on June 13, 2008Today has been a good day. Mind you, it didn’t start out that way?I discovered what I thought was a major snafu this morning (OK, it was a snafu, though it wasn’t as severe as I thought it was). It got me really down and I was, to be honest, really, really unhappy...
oh, so that’s what good teaching is like
Posted on June 12, 2008Finally, a Bar/Bri lecture that was useful, informative, and, frankly, bearable. After two days of “They almost never test this, but here’s the rule anyway,” we finally got a lecturer who gave us informed, frank estimates of how many questions on a given area we’d see on the bar exam?and then spent a proportionate [...
a case of the mondays?
Posted on June 09, 2008As if it weren’t hard enough to get back into reading for Bar/Bri after a four-day break, the power? services? something? in our building went off earlier tonight. Basically, all of the building-central services?cable, the water pump, and general building electricity (elevators, hallway lights, but not unit electricity) just stopped, all of a sudden...
i hate wasting time
Posted on June 08, 2008I just spent several hours building clerkship applications in Oscar and printing my cover letters and resumes for non-Oscar judges, only to discover that my resume stated I graduated from college last month. Oops. Problem is fixed now (reprinting resumes as I type), but what a waste of time!
saturday morning couchblogging
Posted on June 07, 2008I’m enjoying my weekend without Bar/Bri. I ran errands yesterday, confirmed a few things on my clerkship applications, drank a margarita, and then got a good night’s sleep. I have several things to accomplish today, but I think I can do them at a leisurely pace, so I’m hoping to continue enjoying the [...
adjustment
Posted on June 06, 2008Forget the four day break from Bar/Bri; I need a weekend. Getting my body used to getting up for work every day has been . . . unpleasant. Mostly because I still haven’t gotten my body used to going to bed at a decent hour. And there’s no real reason for me [...
obligations
Posted on June 04, 2008Bar/Bri continues apace. Today’s lecture was WAY too long and the lecturer spends too much time repeating the stuff in the notes instead of highlighting the nuance. He is, at least, entertaining. I have given up on the Paced Program for the time being and am instead just trying to keep up with [...
a little less freaked out
Posted on June 02, 2008So Commercial Paper wasn’t as bad as the outline made it out to be. Which is sort of what I thought might happen?it’s not that the topic is all that hard, it’s just promissory notes and checks and the like, it’s that the terminology used is non-intuitive and confusing...
And I thought Torts was bad
Posted on June 01, 2008Commercial paper is the first subject I’ve encountered where I honestly don’t understand half the words I’m reading. Reading the outline is like reading a overwritten contract, and it makes my head hurt to try and decipher what the hell is going on...

Posted on May 31, 2008I did my first set of practice questions today, and I only did about 10 of them because, oh my God, I don’t know ANYTHING. I have been hearing people talk about flash cards and only now do I understand the utility of making such things. I may actually have to go to [...

Posted on May 30, 2008Chicken Magazine posted this (as did E. McPan) and I thought I’d jump in. These are the top 106 books tagged “unread” at LibraryThing. The idea is to bold the ones you?ve read, underline the ones you read for school, and italicize the ones you started but didn?t finish...
what a summer vacation
Posted on May 29, 2008Bar/Bri sucks the life out of me. It’s bad enough that I have ANOTHER sinus infection; do I have to sit through videotaped lectures for four hours a day, too? But they tell me that this is the way to pass the bar, so I do it. Because of the aforementioned sinus infection, though, [...
the bar, she looms
Posted on May 27, 2008Bar/Bri starts today. I’ve been looking over all the materials they’ve given me?the class schedule, the Paced Program, a handout called “The Bar/Bri Method”?and I’m put in mind of that silly essay-writing-method class some of my classmates were fearmongered into taking our first year...
coming full circle
Posted on May 22, 2008It’s been a week since graduation, and I’ve been doing some thinking about the blogging thing. First of all, this blog was initially intended to be about my “journey” through this law school adventure?application, admission, and all three years of being educated...
ending thoughts
Posted on May 17, 2008After a whirlwind few days, my family have all gone back home and I am officially a law school graduate. I’m looking around at the detritus from the commencement festivities?a kitchen full of dirty dishes from brunch, a broken china cup and a missing vertical blind[1], a slightly wigged out dog, and an exhausted [...

graduation looms
Posted on May 10, 2008I was planning to write a sort of lengthy post about the end of law school and all of the myriad emotions I’ve been feeling since taking my last exam, and about wandering around the city feeling unemployed, and how sort of strange I felt today, particularly...

Posted on May 05, 2008I made pho Saturday night because I really wanted pho, but didn’t want to wait for delivery or go get it myself. this is the end, my only friend, the end
Posted on May 02, 2008I’m really in the home stretch now, and I’m starting to feel it. That’s mostly because I just got comments back on my second draft of The Task. I’m really proud of what I’ve written, astonished that I cranked out 21,000 words and that most of them don’t suck, and, most of all, gratified that [...

Posted on April 30, 2008Craigslist is amazing, but only for electronics.[1] Mr. Angst and I found ourselves with an extra flatscreen monitor and I wanted to get rid of it. Posted on April 29, 2008I admit it. I’m a HUGE nerd. So much of a nerd that when I read this Volokh post, I actually tried to explain my hysterical laughter to Mr. Angst by briefly recounting the constitutional requirements for administrative appointments.[1] Note that at least part of my hysterical laughter was inspired by the masthead on the [...

I seem to like the lists lately.
Posted on April 17, 2008I seem to like the lists lately. Here’s another one. I did a quick search on Westlaw today, looking for additional authority for a section of The Task that I’m reworking. It was very gratifying to note that of the top 10 results, I already have?and have read?seven of them...

Posted on April 14, 2008I picked up my disgustingly purple graduation gown this week. The purple color is really not the worst part. The worst part is the two gold-embroidered medallions Right. Over. My. Boobs. ROCK. I had to do my financial aid exit interview this week also...

It feels like Monday because Monday I was too busy to realize it was Monday
Posted on April 01, 2008I am having a bad day, already. OK, I’m not really having a bad day, I’m just not starting out superb. For starters, I got home quite late last night after a long day?one that began at 6:45, and involved driving to a nearby suburb, among other things?and I was just exhausted...
tasking has been taxing
Posted on March 26, 2008I’m pretty sure it’s not good. Oh, I mean, it’s got good parts, and it’s probably a good start, but I’m pretty sure it’s not actually good. I can’t even add “yet” to the end of that sentence; I’m not really sure it’s going to be good...

still tasking, but a little closer to being done
Posted on March 20, 2008I am at just under 14,000 words, and I think I probably need at least 5000 to finish this sucker. But it’s coming along, slowly but surely. I am happy with what I’ve got so far, too, and that, to me, is more important than hitting any predetermined length...

Posted on March 19, 2008I was out of town for four days and it was terrific?I got little sleep, came down with a three day sinus infection (or maybe I was just allergic to my best friend’s hometown), and did absolutely no work. However, I’m back now, and racing towards a deadline...

Posted on March 08, 2008The MPRE is over. I honestly have no idea how it went. What I do know is that I’m back to editing. Editing editing editing.
grr.
Posted on March 07, 2008I am slightly annoyed that the Bar/Bri MPRE practice test answer explanations make reference to rules and exceptions that aren’t stated in the comprehensive outline.
help
Posted on March 06, 2008Between angry authors, summer planning, and class reading, the universe has conspired to ensure that I will fail the MPRE. Can someone give me about six extra hours between now and Saturday morning?
priorities
Posted on March 05, 2008Of all the things on my plate, the one I want to deal with least is the MPRE. That’s just sad. I’d rather be doing some tedious and frustrating editing, or some frustrating and exhausting writing over reading through this big, green MPRE book.

Here, my dears, is the recipe. 1 8-12 lb. brisket, trimmed but not too much (you need some fat for flavor!) 2 tbsp minced garlic or 2 tsp. garlic powder Cavender’s Greek Seasoning Season salt Kosher salt Fresh ground pepper 1 can of Coke (must be COKE, not Diet Coke or Dr...
wrong number? YOU’RE the wrong number!
Posted on February 02, 2008What is it about “I’m sorry, you have the wrong number,” that is so hard to buy? Why do wrong-number callers always insist you are wrong? Why did the wrong-number caller who just called me say, “But this is the number she gave me!” Well, then, she probably didn’t want to hear from you again, sorry...
I wish I were happy for Fridays
Posted on February 01, 2008TGIF my foot. Between the piles of snow that fell on us last night, the frustration of dealing with some administrative hassles, and the never-ending sinus congestion, today has been a pretty pissy day. Fridays always seem to end up like this. I think it’s because, as I finish out the week, I have to deal with all the little things that have piled up over the last five days, and that inevitably leads to me being disappointed in the way someone did something, which leads to me having to put on my “scolding” hat, and GOSH do I hate that hat...
embarrassing factoid about me
Posted on January 31, 2008I’m just going to shamefully admit again how much I love disaster movies, and how pathetic that makes me. Still, watching Volcano in HD?even if it’s not the first movie I’d think of watching in HD?is pretty nice. Back to editing with Tommy Lee in the background.
what do you think?
Posted on January 31, 2008It’s finally happened. After nearly three years of regular abuse, my trusty 12″ Powerbook is becoming a bit gimpy. The handrests are pitted all to hell, the case is a little bent in places, and the power supply connection is getting finicky again...
just . . . shhhhh
Posted on January 29, 2008Dear 1Ls, Your inane, annoying, and mostly inaccurate conversation about getting jobs, being wined and dined, partying, and how you have no idea how to get to parts of the law school that are parts of the law school make me think even less of you than I already did...
a Monday list
Posted on January 28, 2008It’s 1 o’clock. What have I done today? Read background materials for a clinic assignment. Wrote up some questions for my conference call with the supervising attorney this afternoon. Finished my bar exam application. Submitted it online (and paid for it)...
Weekly Law School Roundup #106
Posted on January 28, 2008Welcome to this week’s Law School Roundup, in which I point to a few posts that caught my eye over the last week or so. Apologies for the lateness (and for the shortness) of this Roundup?I’m struggling with the eighty-seven-millionth cold I’ve had since September, and it’s hard to think through the snot...
minivacay
Posted on January 23, 2008My schedule this semester (and Mr. Angst’s, while we’re at it) really precludes us from taking a real vacation before I graduate. (Frankly, if things go the way we hope they willl, we won’t be taking any sort of vacation any time soon...
what I did today
Posted on January 21, 2008Today I: Spilled my breakfast shake all over the kitchen. I had my stand mixer in the accompanying mixing cup, when I left the two of them, upright, on the counter to grab a little more milk?my shake was too thick. I poured the milk, put it back in the fridge, and heard a thud...
why didn’t i go to law school in San Diego?
Posted on January 20, 2008You konw there’s something wrong with the world when you see the temperature display outside a bank and it says “10°” and you think, “Oh, that’s downright balmy.” And, compared to yesterday, your observation is true...
a good start after all!
Posted on January 15, 2008The last week has been good. I’m getting settled back into school, adjusting to my new schedule (which I love), eating healthier, taking more breaks from the computer . . . in general, I think I’ve started the year well. Best of all, I’ve lost 3 pounds by having a homemade fruit-and-yogurt smoothie for breakfast every day, and going to the gym with Mr...

oh gag
Posted on January 08, 2008Look, it’s bad enough that I have to report all my addresses since I was 18. But it’s even worse that, in the four years I was in college, I lived in the dorms (i.e., didn’t have a year-round address of my own at college) AND my parents moved pretty much every year...
party recap and other stuff
Posted on January 06, 2008The party was a success, as these things are measured. The salsa was obliterated, almost all of the tamales (that we put out?I saved a dozen for myself and stashed them in the freezer) were eaten, and our guests even made a significant dent in the sausage cheese balls (which did not benefit from being reheated?next time I won’t make those ahead of time)...
