Life after Trial Prep

Posted on November 19, 2009
Trial Prep has been the bulk of my work since I started. We had like five trials scheduled through January, but now they're all gone. Either settled or rescheduled, or tried. So now what? Boss Dude has given me a few new cases to work on, and I'm starting to take appointments with new clients...

Trial Fail

Posted on November 18, 2009
I was in court this week for my first trial ever. I generally kill trials, just my very existence makes them not happen. Nine years in the legal profession, dozens and dozens of cases prepped for trial, witnesses subpoenaed, exhibits prepared, all ready to go, and all have been canceled...

MILP Roundup #124

PT-Lawmom has the awesome this week. You'll find it back here next week.

Wing-Nuttery Revisited

Posted on November 12, 2009
In nauseating dread of seeing that ridiculous woman's smug face on a row of books and knowing precious trees died for such a tragic cause instead of being used for a much nobler purpose such as toilet paper honor of Sarah Palin's whine-fest publishing debut, I thought I would link to my previous posts concerning her brief foray into national politics, particularly her interviews with Katie Couric for which she apparently spews hate is quite critical...

Awesomesauce

Posted on November 10, 2009
I found this website from the ABA newsletter, written by a solo practitioner who mocks his former firm's most villainous partners. It's definitely worth a read from the beginning, it's hilarious and outrageous. That dude has giant cahones because, while I could definitely write novels about the sociopaths I've worked for in the past, I would be terrified of having to face them in court over it...

Ich bin ein Berliner

Posted on November 09, 2009
Actually, I'm not. But, technically, my husband is. He was born in West Berlin, where he lived until he was about 8 years old. (A fact that gets us stopped and interrogated during every border crossing, because border control cannot figure out how he was born in Germany, is an American citizen, speaks only a little German, and has a mid-western accent...

Halloween

Posted on November 01, 2009
The first costume attempt was Fail.AHHHHHH!!!! The Peep is EATING ME!!!!But we had great success with the second costume, minus the head piece...Abby Cadabby enjoying the spoils of that whole "Trick or Treating"Halloween was quite fun. I really enjoyed taking Cora Trick or Treating...

Misadventures in Health Care

Posted on October 29, 2009
I woke up in the middle of the night to find I couldn't open my left eye. Nasty case of conjunctivitis, and my eye got so swollen, it looked like someone punched me. I put a compress on it, and went back to sleep, knowing I wouldn't be going to the office in the morning, and need an antibiotic, particularly eye drops...

Lawyering

Posted on October 28, 2009
I got sworn in on Friday. There was torrential rain, a lengthy delay in the ceremony starting because someone's grandma (literally) stroked out in the middle of the court room as we're all waiting in the hallway and had to be taken away by an ambulance, and finally, after an hour of standing in high heels on marble floors, they announced my name wrong before we all swore to uphold the US and state constitutions and not to engage in duels with deadly weapons...

Meteor Shower Madness

Posted on October 21, 2009
I think this bizarre day was caused by cosmic debris. I can't explain it otherwise. First, Cora woke up at 3am to scream at us. She calmed down after a couple minutes and went back to sleep, but I couldn't go back to sleep. So I got out of bed to check on some meteor action...

Toddlerness

Posted on October 20, 2009
Now that the weather is getting cold (and particularly, it appears to always be raining), I'm trying to figure out "stuff to do" with Cora. I know, there was the conversation over at LL's blog about how saying a particular lifestyle would make you miserable is an affront to the other camp and their feelings, but shit, I struggle enough figuring out stuff to do with my kid just in the evenings and weekends, I'd be at a real loss figuring out what to do with her during the weekdays too...

October doings

Posted on October 18, 2009
This past Thursday I attended a family law CLE at my law school. My boss wanted me to go, even though I can't count the credits (they said I could only if I went over to the capitol to be sworn in early... no thanks). He wanted me to go for the information and also the networking...

Getting to Now

Posted on October 13, 2009
It's been a helluva trip.I first gave serious consideration to a legal career back in 2000. I had just gotten laid off from a job doing corporate sales, which I really enjoyed, but even at 20 years old I recognized that would not be a career with much job security...

Proto Attorney, Esq.

Posted on October 09, 2009
I'm completely stunned, relieved, and exhausted. When I got the first Facebook message that the results were up, I couldn't even check it. I sat there staring at the link to the results, I couldn't click on it. Instead I called one of my friends from law school for moral support since I was having a panic attack...

Stuff Other Than the Bar

Posted on October 08, 2009
Going back and forth between responding to motions in limine for an upcoming trial, and freaking out, is not working. So I figured I'd try some happier distractions: other stuff that's going on.Some friends of ours got married this weekend. Husband was a groomsman...

Bar-mares

Posted on October 08, 2009
My concentration is officially shot. It's amazing I didn't wreck and die on the way to work this morning from The City. My hands are literally shaking from the nervousness, lack of sleep, lack of sustenance. I am a hot mess. I don't know why I'm letting them do this to me, torture me like this...

Counting Down

Posted on October 05, 2009
Counting down to Friday, which seems like an eternity away. At the same time, wishing Friday would never come, so I can continue to believe that I actually passed the bar instead of finding out otherwise. It's kinda like 1L grades. That happy bliss after you take finals, turning to nervousness as grades start posting, turning to disappointment as you realize you aren't nearly as smart as you thought you were...

Demons

Posted on September 27, 2009
We have a couple child custody cases at the office involving a particular local family. My paralegal was telling me about Crazy Granny's testimony at the custody hearing, wherein she started talking about "the demons." I'm not sure how "the demons" actually fit into the custody matter, but even in an area of the country known for some crazy backwoods religions, ranting about demons in court is pretty nutters...

Women in Combat

Posted on September 25, 2009
Growing up in a society that told little girls we could be "anything" when we grew up, such inspiration was often diminished by the reality that there were significant limits to what we could actually be. One of the big limits has always been not allowing women in combat...

Verdicts

Posted on September 24, 2009
No matter how good your case is, no matter how excellent an attorney you are, you can really only give an educated guess about how a jury is going to decide. Voir dire is a way to sort through the jurors, get a feel for them, possibly reveal some prejudices and biases, but you can't ever know for sure what goes on in an individual juror's head, nor how putting that specific group of people together will affect the outcome...

No! Don't make me go to law school again!

Posted on September 23, 2009
I hope this isn't an indication that I've failed the bar so badly that they want me to go back to 1L and try again.I just received this email (I hope) erroneously, it made me chuckle:Dear [Proto Attorney]:We have received the electronic submission of your application for admission to [A Law School in Chicago] College of Law...

Toddler Overload

Posted on September 21, 2009
My child is turning into a bigger handful by the day. Cora actually lied to me today. She just would not take a nap. And of course, since she never shuts up, she isn't quite the stealthy ninja about it that she thinks she is. I could hear her in there, chattering to her stuffed animals...

Making New Friends

Posted on September 17, 2009
I might be a little pathetic. I'm at the point where my boss's wife is calling people up and asking them to be my friend. I feel sad for myself in a profound way. The result being, I have a blind lunch date next week with a woman my age, who is in the financial industry, and has an infant...

Negotiations

Posted on September 17, 2009
I am very happy I will soon be sending my first donation to my graduate program. It's not much, just a couple hundred, but I will be so happy to make a contribution. It was such a wonderful experience, and I am thrilled to finally be in a position where I can give back...

Planetary Misalignments

Posted on September 14, 2009
There must just be something wrong in the universe this week. Celebrities and public figures are acting like total assholes (even moreso than they usually do), and it's just been a really tragic and an unusually violent week in our city, with three murders in three days...

When Domestic Relations Law Becomes Criminal Law

Posted on September 12, 2009
A woman in my City was murdered yesterday, just down the street from where a friend of mine lives. No charges have been filed yet, but it seems likely that her ex-fiance did it. The cops found him at his parents' graves, where he'd slit his wrists. Then he fired at the cops...

The Good, the Bad and the Sucky

Posted on September 09, 2009
Boss Dude sent me to the courthouse this morning to watch a med mal trial, which was oodles of fun and most educational. He wanted me to scope out the defense attorney we occasionally have cases with, and also observe the judge. The case was against two family practice docs for failure to diagnose (heart disease)...

Bad-Ass Lady Lawyers

Posted on September 08, 2009
I just posted over at Ms. JD about the lady lawyer in my (former) legal community who took down the three lawyers who ripped off their clients in the Fen-Phen scandal. Ethics anyone? A friend of ours many years ago worked for one of those guys right out of law school (the dude with the chick's name)...

Small Town Practice

Posted on September 02, 2009
Today an attorney from The City came to our office to take the depositions of our client and another witness of ours. This attorney works at Big Law. I sat in on the pre-deposition meeting with the client and witness, where we explain to them to stick to answering the question actually asked, don't start rambling on about crap you don't actually know to be true, don't say anything stupid, etc...

Solo parenting

Posted on August 31, 2009
This has been my first solo week in Small Town with Cora and without Husband. He's got class in the morning, and he worked last night, so he wasn't able to make it out this week. This morning, Cora was in a pretty good mood... until we got to daycare, of course...

Another Week, Another Weekend

Posted on August 30, 2009
There's never a weekend where there's just nothing going on. That's not a bad thing, I love being busy and having stuff to do. But I know it's only a matter of time before I need a weekend of hibernation. I'm an incredibly lazy person by nature (most humans evolved from apes...

Demons of Stupidity

Posted on August 26, 2009
Today was Epic Judge Fail Day. A judge in our county failed to enter a domestic violence protective order for one of our clients who was beat up by her spouse. I won't go into details, but let's just blame it on the Demons of Stupidity, which caused said rejection...

Suckedy Day

Posted on August 25, 2009
I'm in a bit of a funk today. I spent all day researching this horrible mess of a case, trying to do research for a reply to an appellant's brief that is so bad that it doesn't cite any legal authority, or even the record of the case itself. After spending hours trying to figure out how on earth I should even begin to respond to that, I talked it out with Boss Dude, and he gave me some specific areas to research and address...

End of the Week

Posted on August 21, 2009
I got back into the city tonight at 5:30, in time to have dinner with Husband and Cora at our favorite neighborhood Mexican restaurant. I missed them both very much. Of course, I'd been so busy Wednesday and Thursday, that even if we'd been in the same city, I wouldn't have gotten to see them anyway...

Employed

Posted on August 18, 2009
I have a job. It is awesome.I arrived Sunday evening with the whole family in tow. We got everything unpacked and enjoyed some family time/exploration. The apartment is across the street from the park, so we've gotten to take lots of walks through it...

Adventures in Domesticity

Posted on August 15, 2009
I decided to try something today that I don't do very often -- cook. We made plans to take dinner over to our friends' house, and I decided to make lasagna, which I definitely don't do very often. I wanted to try one of Giada's recipes, and I've never been disappointed with one...

Early Morning Insecurities

Posted on August 13, 2009
I woke up this morning (unfortunately before 7am) and my initial thought was that I have no idea how I'm going to practice employment law. How am I supposed to tell my clients that they should fight for their rights against their employers, when I've never stood up to do the same?I was thinking about those assholes who promised my mom a job four months ago and then changed their minds...

People suck

Posted on August 12, 2009
My mother is back to being unemployed thanks to people being giant assholes. Our state's unemployment rate is over 10%, and she is soooo going to end up living with me. With me. Husband said she's not living with him, that I have to take her with me to the new town if she ends up losing her house...

Last Week of Unemployment

Posted on August 10, 2009
I'm planning to enjoy my final week of unemployment. It's going to be quite the adjustment, not only to working in a new city, but just working in general. I haven't worked full time since the summer after 2L. And more importantly, I'm totally not a morning person, not at all...

On government

Posted on August 10, 2009
A couple years ago, our mayor and her city government began a very expensive fight to take over the local water company. The argument was that the city should own the water company, because it would be an investment in our future, and would be overall better for our city's residents...

Bar Exam Advice

Posted on August 07, 2009
Being a week out from having taken the bar exam, I of course don't have my results. So I don't know whether I passed or not (and I go between feeling absolutely confident I passed, and moments of horrific panic that I've failed). But I can tell you what I did and didn't do to prepare, what I'm glad I did and what I wish I didn't do...

Moved

Posted on August 05, 2009
Yesterday we moved my furniture into the new apartment. Fortunately, the torrential rain stopped long enough for us to get the furniture into the apartment without getting wet. We were already a bit wet from moving the furniture from the house into the truck, but it wasn't too bad...

Home, Sweet Home

Posted on August 04, 2009
Or, I guess, part-time home. Tomorrow I'm moving my furniture to the new apartment.Very busy day tomorrow. After Cora goes to daycare, Husband and I are having breakfast with a friend from law school/grad school. Then we're picking up the moving truck and loading up the furniture...

Chillin' in NY

Posted on August 01, 2009
I'm stealing someone's wireless right now to reconnect to the cyber realm. Cora's taking a nap, and I'm taking a break from family (in particular, my mother). So far, we're having a really good time, and we managed to make it up here on Thursday in only 9 1/2 hours, without killing each other...

It's over

Posted on July 29, 2009
Hopefully it stays over. What an awful experience, I want to sleep for a week. Suckily, I'm driving for 10 hours tomorrow, I'll sleep next week. So here's the bar exam recap:Last week, I continuously freaked the hell out, studying 14 hours a day and doing every possible practice multiple choice problem Bar/Bri provided...

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Pray for Us

Posted on July 27, 2009
St. Catherine of Alexandria, by Caravaggio, c. 1598[Patron Saint of Students and Lawyers]And so it goes. I'll be back on Wednesday.Good luck to my fellow bar examiners. See you on the other side.

The End of the Road

Posted on July 26, 2009
Well, it's here: The end of the road. I've got a little bit more studying to do today, but the bulk of it is done. And whatever happens, happens. I'm not as prepared as I feel I should be, but I have the feeling that no one goes in feeling as prepared as they should be...

Radio Silence

Posted on July 19, 2009
After today, I'm going off the radar for the rest of the week until the bar exam. So, you won't hear all the stories about me curling up into a ball and sobbing hysterically, setting fire to my Bar/Bri books, or running away and joining the circus instead of taking the bar...

Diversion

Posted on July 17, 2009
Husband is working tonight, but instead of getting a sitter and doing more studying, I decided I deserved some quality time with the kid. We ate dinner, watched some Elmo (today, Elmo referred to Mr. Noodle as being a "swinger" and I nearly spit Diet Coke out my nose), and played with Cora's new bath toys, these letters and numbers that when wet, stick to the bathroom tile...

Bitterness

Posted on July 16, 2009
I know Husband has earned his leisurely summer vacation. Since he finished his clinicals the first week of June, he only has to work 25 hours per week, which is only two shifts (he works 2 days of the weekend, but gets paid for 40 hours, since he works every weekend)...

Taking a Break

Posted on July 15, 2009
Tomorrow evening, I'm going to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I'm so nerdily excited.I've been watching Goblet of Fire while eating dinner/making more flash cards. It's my favorite of the whole series. It's where the books start getting darker, and more "grown-up...

Countdown

Posted on July 15, 2009
The bar is in two weeks. Crazily, I wish it was next week so it could just be over. I have a lot to do still, both as far as studying and as far as getting ready for the new job. I haven't even started packing, I put Husband on the task of securing a moving van, and there are all sorts of things I need to buy for the new apartment...

Blog RIP

Posted on July 12, 2009
Those of you who read the MILP blogs have probably noticed one of those blogs has recently disappeared. Unfortunately, because of reasons that cannot be disclosed, this blogger has been forced to take down her blog. She wasn't allowed to explain why to her readers, nor even to say a proper goodbye...

Dear Bar Exam,

Posted on July 12, 2009
I hate you. I wish you would spontaneously burst into flames and meet a fiery death so we never meet.I hate you that much. Oh, I'm all over you with some MBE. That's right. The MBE is getting owned on July 29th. Owned. You will be my bitch, MBE. But you are currently kicking my ass with the essays...

Crazy ensues

Posted on July 10, 2009
It's been a bad couple days for me. I've been studying my ass off for Evidence, and it doesn't seem to be doing any good. I think I've hit a wall. So, now I'm trying a different approach and spending the evening going through the Law in a Flash cards for Hearsay and Character Evidence...

Dear University Hospital Administration,

Posted on July 10, 2009
You can suck it.Today, I am mailing my final payment on the massive amount of hospital bills you assholes charged me because I was underinsured during my pregnancy (because I had the crappy university insurance policy). For instance, every week that I needed an ultrasound (which was every week from week 21 to week 36), you not only charged me at least $800 for less than 10 minutes of use of the ultrasound machine, but well over $300 for 10 minutes of the ultrasound technician's time, and 2 minutes of the doctor's time...

Seeking

Posted on July 09, 2009
One of my jobs in our house is finding stuff. Husband is really good at losing stuff, and so I spend a lot of time tracking things down. His wallet, his phone, his keys, his shoes, you name it, I've looked for it. For instance, last night, Husband was tearing apart the house looking for a book he borrowed from a friend which he'd taken on vacation...

Kiddie Stuff

Posted on July 07, 2009
Part of being a parent is, of course, being re-emerged in the world of Kiddie Stuff. Songs long forgotten have to be relearned, and sung, and sung, and sung. Stuffed animals, and cars, and blocks, and crayons litter the house and are part of our daily lives...

Tired, cranky

Posted on July 05, 2009
It's been a long weekend. And not all good.I've been knocking out the rest of the Bar/Bri lectures early so I can concentrate on practice exams for the next three weeks. Corporations guy was really good, even though he was SUPER obnoxious. I wish every lecturer had been as good as him though...

I have a MUG! Oh, and an apartment.

Posted on July 02, 2009
I'm unbelievably excited about the fact that I have a mug. We frequent this British Pub. Sadly, when we came in tonight, the waitress remembered what we ordered three nights ago. That's how often we're there. We even bring Cora (she loves the goat cheese dip on pita)...

Enjoying the Afternoon

Posted on June 30, 2009
... in spite of listening to boring Bar/Bri lectures. I've been working on the review lectures from the Simulated MBE. I rock out when it comes to Crim Law/Crim Pro, so it makes Crimes Lady even more boring. I'm bored with the going on and on about the black letter law...

New Blog, Renewed Focus

Posted on June 28, 2009
I'm trying out some changes with the blog. Give me some feedback!First, I changed the name. I figure I'm no longer knocked up, nor am I in law school, so the old name is kinda inapplicable. But the URL has always been attorney work product, since I started it in 2007, so I went with that...

Make-Over

Posted on June 28, 2009
Please have patience, while I figure out what the hell I'm doing in editing the html. It's been a very long time since I've done any programming whatsoever. Things should be fixed soon!UPDATE: I think I've got things under control now. That's what I get for trying to take some free template, and then customize it...

More wasted days

Posted on June 25, 2009
I spent yet another day apartment hunting yesterday. Four hours of driving, and quite a bit of time just driving around and looking at places. I saw a couple apartments, including a house that was for rent that might have been rather nice if not for the extremely offensive odors...

Relocating

Posted on June 21, 2009
I took a day trip to my new town to go apartment-hunting the week before last. I thought I'd found an apartment, told the guy I wanted it, only to find out his partner had just rented it to someone else. So he says. I'm skeptical by nature. The apartment was too good to be true...

The Comment Box

Posted on June 14, 2009
If you're a new reader, you probably arrived here either from googling "pregnant in law school" or from another "blawg." When I first found out I was pregnant, I too made the same internet search. (LagLiv's blog was the first I found.) Since then, I've discovered a whole network of Moms in Law School/Legal Profession (check out the sidebar for a few)...

Bar Reviewing

Posted on June 07, 2009
Bar review? Hates it. However, the iPod option is soooo much better than sitting in the classroom. I don't know why they even bother paying these dudes to show up to the law schools anyway. No wonder the course is so crazy expensive. Anyway, it's nice to be able to stop the recording, go have some lunch, or run some errands, or take a little cat nap...

Opinions

Posted on May 26, 2009
My kid's been alive for what, like, 18 months now? She apparently believes this entitles her to have opinions of her own. The worst example being that I have purchased three pairs of adorable sandals she refuses to allow touch her feet. Sandals are obviously not real shoes and the world will end if she wears them...

Vacationings

Posted on May 25, 2009
The view from my canopy bed at the pool...If you have some vacation time and a little extra cash, I highly recommend taking a trip to Mexico right now, particularly Quintana Roo. It is super cheap to fly there right now, and it is super empty of tourists...

Vacationing

Posted on May 17, 2009
We leave in the afternoon for Mexico! Hurray! I remember when vacationing was so much more spontaneous. For this vacation, I:1. Purchased interruption/cancellation and medical insurance. How grown-up and lawyer-like.2. Registered our trip with the State Dept...

Life after law school

Posted on May 12, 2009
1. Graduation weekend and partying like a rock star. Friday after graduation, I had a party at my house where we killed two fifths of bourbon, then off to the "homo bar" after everyone left to continue knocking back drinks, including several rounds of shots, and dancing the night away...

No More Law School

Posted on May 06, 2009
I am officially done with law school. (insert cheer here)I took my last final (for Family Law) this morning. I cleaned out my locker at the law school and took off the lock. I stopped by my former office and dropped off my key and said adieu to my former boss and coworkers...

Continuing the Fail

Posted on April 30, 2009
The International Law exam today was disastrous. I know, it's my own fault. I let myself get all worked up yesterday about the stupid NPO grade that I barely even looked at the material, and then completely freaked during the exam. I mean, like, completely...

Mid-finals update

Posted on April 29, 2009
1. International law turns out to be a closed note-closed book exam, which we were all shocked and appalled to find out last week. The last two classes I had with this professor, also international courses, were open book-open note, and so we had all just assumed...

Last week of school!

Posted on April 21, 2009

After the week I've had, I decided to indulge. That's a 4" stiletto heel, 1" platform kind of retail therapy. Better than drinking alone. Although probably more expensive.Seriously, it's been a week of complete suck. I'd go more into it, but I don't have the energy...

Fighting Crime

This past weekend I did a ride along with the local police department (our city has about 250,000 people to give you an idea of the action). Those of us doing the internship with the prosecutors office got to go. They sent us with second shift on Friday, in the more hoppin' part of town (i...

Ask a Mom in Law School: Balancing Schedules, and Interviewing

Posted on March 22, 2009
Cross-posted at Ms. JD.Spring Break has come to an end! I'm seven weeks away from completing my JD, and I have a rambunctious toddler who will be reeking havoc at graduation. Life is good. So, I've been asked to impart more wisdom concerning being both a parent and a law student...

I went for the geek choice (Watchmen), rather than an Oscar pick. Awesome movie, that stays very true to the graphic novel...

Decisions

Posted on March 11, 2009
I had the lunch interview today, which was interesting. We had lunch at this really swanky restaurant that I haven't been to in over 7 years (I actually met my husband at this place, the location of our friends' wedding reception). Lunch was quite good, and I really like the attorney...

Wanted

Somebody wants me. It's nice to be wanted.I got a job offer from the dude I interviewed with a couple weeks ago, the one 2 hours away in the NE part of the state. It is a really good offer.I still have another interview on Wednesday, which is really promising since that dude is taking me to lunch at a really swanky place, so I figure he must be serious about me...

Valentines weekend

Posted on February 15, 2009
We had a good weekend. My mom took Cora overnight so we could have some grown-up time. Good timing too, because Cora was in a seriously foul mood yesterday, and we were definitely glad to be shipping her off to Grandma's. So, we had a lazy day yesterday, did a little homework, watched some TV...

I figure I might as well blog about my suppression hearing experience since I have to write a paper at the end of the semester about all this jazz anyway. In short, we won. Not thanks to any great lawyering by me. When the response to defendant's argument comes down to, uh, no, dude, that's not how criminal procedure works (here's my crim pro outline if you'd like the black-letter law), well, it's not really a big deal...

Licensing and practice

Thought I'd take a break from the lameness that is spending my Saturday night outlining. Even worse, it's re-outlining. My friend and I split the readings for nonprofit orgs to outline and I outlined my portion on Thursday night only for it to disappear into oblivion, now I get to re-do it...

Family bonding

My BFF (and Cora's godfather) is in town visiting, and has been staying with us. She generally sobs uncontrollably the first time she sees him, then warms up to him after awhile. She does the same thing with her grandfather. It isn't stranger anxiety -- she generally flirts with every other man she comes in contact with...

Ice

I haven't been to school in three days. We were on delay Tuesday and today, and canceled all together on Wednesday. We had snow and an ice storm. Christmastime in Hell

div style="text-align: justify;"Only law students understand the special kind of hell that is finals week(s). That's curved so you get a worse grade than you would otherwise have gotten because you had the misfortune of taking the same class as all of the smart people...

Saving my breath

I know this is difficult for people to imagine but, even though I went to school to become a lawyer, I'm not madly in love with the sound of my own voice. Too much husband

This Day in History

Home stretch

It's finally the home stretch. Last week of classes, two weeks of finals ahead. Last night was my Lit Skills murder trial. We lost. We had no real evidence, we had two witnesses that were just terrible and one who was unrealiable at best (the characters, not the folks who performed)...

Sigh

It's not looking good for our international moot court team. While we're pretty sure we can raise the money to cover the registration fee and the accommodations in Vienna, I don't think we'll be able to raise enough to cover our airfare. I have enough rewards points on my credit card to pay for my trip (I use my credit card for everything), so it's not an issue for me...

Apathy

Using my real name, I've cross-posted over at Ms. JD, and I've set up a public blog for our international moot court team, which as soon as the dean's office catches wind of it, is going to have my ass in hot water (hehe, yay, drama!)...

Follow-Up Question

This one will need to be answered by those of you who already had children when you entered law school. (You know who you are!)A fellow mom/future MILP [with a school-age child] asks us:How has spending so much of yourself on school affected your relationship with your child?I'll start with my thoughts, even though my kid came during law school, so I have no real reference point for change...

Church and State

Posted on November 07, 2008
The protests in California to Proposition 8 have specifically targeted the Mormon church for its role in the campaign. The conflict has taken a dangerous ?gay vs. religion? turn. I have little sympathy for the Mormon church itself. Frankly, if you put your church in the middle of a highly emotional political conflict, on a side that seeks to deprive your fellow citizens of their civil rights, and you end up with angry protesters outside of your church? good...

From debate to insult

I'll be glad when the election season is over, mainly because I'm tired of reading incredibly offensive email forwards and such written by classmates, family members, etc. I love a good debate, and I usually take it good-naturedly. Conservative douchebaggery

I don't know why I continue to read conservative columnists. Why, I read the Wall Street Journal, mostly...

The Politics of Character Assassination

Snark? or just Stupid?

Posted on October 04, 2008
This is a follow-up observation to this clip, but it's something I thought about after I had already posted. Does it seem to anyone else like Sarah Palin has a really big chip on her shoulder? She is completely snarky when asked why she had never left the country before, getting defensive that well, she had to work for a living, she didn't have parents that handed her a passport and a backback! Then when asked what newspapers she reads, and can't answer, she later acts like it's an insult, "oh, what, you're saying that Alaskans don't read newspapers?" Huh? Seems to me she immediately jumps on the snark to avoid the having to explain herself, her choices and especially her flubs...

Ahahahaha!!!

Posted on October 04, 2008
Short Sarah Palin:"Doggonit, I didn't want to have to answer real interview questions on stuff I don't know! Like silly questions about what policy I support, or stuff that political leaders are supposed to know! I mean, I wanted to attack Barack Obama to deflect from the fact that I don't know anything! Katie Couric's mean! No fair!"

Sarah Palin -- protector of our privacy rights

In anticipation of the debate

Posted on October 02, 2008
Here is an article from Salon, that I really feel perfectly articulates the Sarah Palin issue. I am a strong democrat, but at the same time, I'm also one of those geeky people that loves a good throw-down election. Not in the dirty politics, skirt the issues and sling mud sort of way, but in an honest debate of the issues, the problems and may the best candidate win...

Women and health

Posted on September 30, 2008
Here is a link to an excellent report from Planned Parenthood analyzing why McCain's health care plan would be disasterous for women (men too, but especially for women). Even if you aren't pro-choice, and might not like Planned Parenthood, you can't deny that McCain's "overhaul" of the insurance system would simply leave women stranded in many aspects of their health, not just in reproductive services...

I've been neglecting the "mom in law school" portion of the blog, in favor of the much more interesting topic of politics, especially regarding foreign policy, which is my big interest. Analysis

Foreign policy?

Posted on September 26, 2008
I'm highly disappointed that half of the debate was on the economy, not on foreign policy, greatly cutting the depth and substance of the foreign policy debate. I guess the economy's important too, whatever. Still disappointed. Bah.Anyway, I think both candidates did well...

Irritation

Day of FAIL

Posted on September 24, 2008
We have definite FAIL going on today. I'm seriously considering skipping class, it's been that good of a day.We wake up this morning, like any other morning, to the sound of Cora crying for a bottle. She generally wakes up about 7:30, plays in her crib, then when she starts getting hungry, cries for us to get her a bottle (usually about 8)...

Bailouts

Posted on September 23, 2008
I'm struggling this semester in BA. The actual "business" part I get, and I know a minimal amount about global economics, but our class keeps going back to accounting and finance, which are two concepts that elude me completely. I'm trying to improve myself, though, and not be a complete moron when it comes to all that financial stuff...

Swift Boats, Part Deux

Posted on September 16, 2008
The "friends" of the GOP strike again. Why actually debate the issues, when you can just participate in a willful campaign of misinformation? (And by that I mean outright lying.) Jerome Corsi, writing "Obama Nation" has once again sacrificed any sort of academic integrity he might have once had on the altar of political smear...

Eggs

Posted on September 15, 2008
I decided not to try out for our school's trial team. The deadline was Friday, and I let it pass. I ultimately decided this for a few reasons. First, I'm doing way too much already, and I'm already getting my ass kicked in BA. I might only have two finals this semester, but I may fail one of them, ugh...

Experience not necessary, knowledge is a must

I know, I'm the world's shittiest blogger. Here I'm supposed to be blogging about my experiences as (now a mom) and being a law student, and all you get here are crickets and tumbleweeds. Anyway, I promise I will post more in the future. Getting back into the groove of school and also working the maximum number of hours allowed by the honor code has been tough, especially since Business Associations is already kicking my ass, and we're only on the third week...

Last stretch

This is my last week of freedom. I can't believe classes start next Tuesday. I have to go buy a textbook tomorrow, since the title was never released in time for me to order it off the web. I'm going to pick up Husband's books too while I'm there, so it'll probably be an expensive trip...

Workin'

I've actually worked hard this week, hurrah! I'm about to finish a depo summary, then go home to relieve Husband of baby duty. Cora has a cold, so she's a ball of fun. Snotty, sneezy and in general, pissed off. Her poor little nose is all chapped from all the snot...

Exercise is hazardous to your health

Only I could possibly manage to injure myself on gym equipment in a most craptacular way.I've been training for a half-marathon in October, so I've been spending a lot of time at the gym doing aerobics. In order to keep myself on the machines, I invested in a portable DVD player, which has been successful in keeping me on the machine for 42 minutes at a time (the length of a television episode)...

The Future

So, I've been absent from blogging for awhile... I've been going through a bit of a funk. I am a mess. There's nothing "hot" about it either. Phase 1: I start out with allergies. Probably caused by cleaning the house. I'm allergic to dust, but it doesn't bother me if it's just laying there two inches thick on my bookshelves. It's when I clean it off that it stirs it up and gets to me...

Stuck

Not much interesting to report. Working part time, and it's been kinda slow (the boss has been enjoying the weather and playing some golf). Spending time with Cora and watching a lot of TV. Mostly X-Files since I'm going back and watching old episodes in anticipation of the new movie, but I occasionally let Cora watch some TV too -- she really likes Baby Monet, she'd watch it all day if I let her...

Husband and I, and three of our friends took a trip to Hawaii in January of '06, and it was fantastic. Three of us stayed with my friend who's in the Air Force and lives in Honolulu, the other two stayed in Waikiki. It was just incredible. I always thought Hawaii would be overpriced and overrated, but it was truly worth every penny spent (not to mention the free place to stay was awesome)...

Pissed

I got a bad grade in Medical Liability, a freaking C plus! I am so pissed off! Tax, I understood the bad grade, but I knew the Med Liability material backwards and forwards. I even actually did all the reading all semester and took good notes and outlined! I'm going to talk to the professor about it in the fall...

Grades

Posted on June 06, 2008
I'm still missing one grade (from an adjunct professor who apparently hasn't submitted them yet), but overall I was pleased with my grades this semester. I stayed within the confines of mediocrity, and got B's, although this was definitely my most solid semester, even going above the curve...

Champagne and sour grapes

Posted on June 04, 2008
Last night was our 2-year wedding anniversary. We technically celebrated on Saturday, sans baby, since we had a sitter. We got gussied up and went to a fancy dinner. Last night we cooked at home, and celebrated by having family time, watching the results come in from Montana and South Dakota, and drinking a bottle of Dom Perignon 1995*...

Pirates! Arrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Posted on June 03, 2008
I'm not exactly a hardcore advocate of intellectual property rights. For instance, I think it's pretty lame that it's illegal to download a TV show off the internet, when you can tape it off the TV with a VCR. If, hypothetically speaking of course, I download an episode of Doctor Who instead of waiting three weeks for it to air in the US on Sci-Fi Channel (trying to avoid spoilers from the Brits who've already seen them), what does it matter? It doesn't harm anyone...

Confidence

Posted on June 01, 2008
For the past two years of law school, I've really felt all along that I just don't know enough. I don't feel that in any of my classes, even the ones I got good grades in, that I fully grasped all of the concepts of that area of law. Some of them, I'm pretty sure I didn't grasp a single concept of the law (i...

I've been such a "serious" blogger lately, I figure it's time to post some pics so you can oooh and aaahh about how cute my kid is.Cora and her "big sister." She's finally discovered the dog. The dog loves Cora. They're kindred spirits. They're both rather disgusting...

Friendship

Posted on May 23, 2008
I figured since I'd started dissecting my post about what makes my life as a parent easier, I would continue that series. This time, I wanted to talk about the friends that have helped us along the way.I have a friend who has often chided me for having "too many" friends...

Co-Parenting and Partnership

On Constructive Criticism

Posted on May 19, 2008
Law School Mom wrote a post a few days ago complaining about how there is no real honest dialog throughout the blogosphere, (I assume specifically in the Moms in Law circle) about the difficulties of balancing family life and law/law school. However, if you make a call for honest dialog, don't then disable the comments on the post...

Book Review: A Prisoner of Birth

Posted on May 16, 2008
A Prisoner of Birth is a novel about revenge and redemption by Jeffrey Archer. Its protagonist, Danny Cartwright, is wrongly convicted of his best friend?s murder and sentenced to life in prison, torn away from his fiancée and child. Because Cartwright is uneducated and from the ?wrong? end (East End) of London, the jury chooses to believe the testimony of four ?respectable? blokes from the West End who refer to themselves as the ?Musketeers...

Happy Belated Mother's Day

Posted on May 12, 2008
Yesterday we decided to skip mass like bad Catholics, and spend most of the day in bed. It was storming in the morning, so it was nice and cozy. I got Cora out of her crib at 8, and brought her to bed with us after she ate/was changed. She played for awhile and then took a nap with us...

Health Insurance = Suck

Posted on May 08, 2008
I hate insurance companies. I sooooooo hate insurance companies. I have friends in the insurance industry, and I certainly wouldn't want them to be out of jobs, but I really just want to see the entire industry flattened and replaced with a [working] system of non-profit, hassle-free medical coverage...

New job

Posted on May 06, 2008
I started my new job yesterday. I'm working part-time for a plaintiff's attorney who does products liability and personal injury. I like it a bazillion times better than my old firm, to the point that I almost wish it were a full time job. (Almost!)First, I have my own office...

Reflections from a Mom in Law School

Posted on May 04, 2008
Thus ends 2L year. A whole lot of good, and plenty of suck to go with it, but we made it through relatively unscathed. And we?re ready for an awesome summer!Having a baby during the second year of law school was pretty crazy. I knew it would be tough, but it was easier in some ways and much harder in others...

Poor Eight Belles. (This is what happens when I bet on horses. I'm serious. I am really bad luck when it comes to horse racing. Don't get me started about Barbaro) I was sure she'd win the Derby, she was a great contender. The sweet, pretty girl came in second, her final race...

Finished!

Posted on May 03, 2008
I am finished with finals, and with 2L. What a good feeling that is!Anyway, I said I'd post about the baptism and such. We had a ton of family come down for the baptism, so the weekend in the middle of finals I got to entertain a ton of family, and then get the house ready for the reception after the baptism last Sunday...

One more to go!

Posted on May 01, 2008
Tomorrow's my last final, and it's the FINAL of DOOM: International Environmental Law. Since I got a rude, impromptu study session during my graduate school comps when an IE law essay question popped up, I feel moderately prepared for this exam. We can bring in our outlines and our book too, so it's not so bad...

Mid-Finals Cry For Mercy

Posted on April 30, 2008
I can't take it anymore. If I read one more boring-ass word of the GATT, the GATS, the TRIPs, or any other stupid-ass acronym, my head will explode. Three finals down, two to go, and I am seriously fatigued! The last of The Family left today, so life can return to normal (other than crappy-ass* finals)...

Hells yeah... Post-graduation tradition: Going out to the same local watering hole, and getting completely trashed. Solving world's problems with the assistance of my classmates.Tonight was graduation for my Graduate Program. While I don't know my fellow graduates very well (they all started after I had left the program for law school, so I never had classes with them), I appreciate the camaraderie they have with one another, because I had (and still have) that with those classmates I entered with...

There's nothing that makes your ass look bigger than an academic robe. Geez! That's right, I passed my graduate comprehensive exams! (Even though there was an unfortunate essay question on international environmental law, ugh.) Graduation is tomorrow night, although we don't wear caps and gowns for it, just professional attire...

Going on hiatus

I'm Famous!

Posted on March 31, 2008
You know you're famous when:1. You're asked by a publisher to read a book and then write a review on your blog. How fun! I'm excited about this. For three reasons: First, I've never been asked to review anything before. Second, it's been awhile since I read a book that wasn't a legal casebook, a legal supplement, or on topics of global governance...

Changes

Posted on March 21, 2008
I started back on Weight Watchers finally. Although I'm only 5 pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight, I need to also take off the 20 pounds of 1L weight. And the 15 pounds of Desk Job weight I packed on when I started as a legal assistant in 2000. And the ten pounds I gained freshman year of college...

Update

I know, I've been neglecting The Blog for awhile now. The semester's been wearing me down, as well as the job search. No word on the WTC internship. (I take that as a "no.") I had an interview with another mid-size insurance defense firm on Thursday after I got back from Florida...

Interviews

Posted on March 04, 2008

Goings on

I haven't updated in awhile, I've been really busy and just trying to get stuff done.I had a job interview last week, and I have a job offer. It's part time, but that's okay, because that would free me up to do other things. I have an interview this week for an internship with the WTC, which is part time, unpaid...

Things I'm Pissed About

Posted on February 26, 2008
1. The weather. It's cold and raining/snowing, and it's dark and gloomy outside. Bad weather always deteriorates my mood. I'm ready for spring.2. Not sleeping. I've been up since 4am. Enough said.3. Jerk-off lying bastards. After I was lied to about how my former firm had already replaced me, seeing the request for resumes on the job website...

Ice

Posted on February 21, 2008
We got hit with an ice storm today. Not a terrible one like we had a few years ago where the entire city was out of power for nearly a week. But it got us dismissed from school early, of which I'm a big fan, considering I hadn't finished my reading for International Trade, and even though I still had an hour to get it done, it wasn't high on my list of things I wanted to do...

Job hunting

Posted on February 18, 2008
I mailed out seventy resumes last week, with cover letters written specifically for each firm/area of specialty. I've already started getting the rejection letters. At least it isn't personal; they all say, oh sorry, your resume looks great and we would have interviewed you, but we already filled our positions...

New direction

Posted on February 12, 2008
Trying to figure out what to do with myself this summer. I'm papering the town with my resume, but I'm not sure I really want to work at another law firm. I think the collective number of assholes I've worked for, coupled with being dicked over by the only non-asshole lawyers I'd ever worked for, has left me with a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to law firms...

And the grand total is...

Posted on February 09, 2008
$15,562.31. Yup, that's the amount of our medical bills. We have just over $9,000 left to pay. I'm about to do our taxes, so we'll find out how much our refund will cover and how much overtime Husband will have to work to pay off the rest, since I'm no longer employed...

Storms

Posted on February 06, 2008
Crazy storms last night. I'm not generally bothered by them. I've been through two tornadoes, one which ripped through my high school my freshman year (see? prayers do come true). The second never actually hit the building I was in, but touched down nearby...

Snoring away

Posted on February 04, 2008
Glad someone's getting some rest. Not me. Little Gremlin is a growing girl, she's almost 10 pounds now. She decided she needed food every three hours last night, so I'm pooped.I had two doctor's appointments this morning. One for a general physical and get an order for lab work (all that cholesterol and thyroid checking and whatnot), and then to talk about birth control...

Sad

Posted on February 04, 2008
This evening, my teenage neighbor shot himself. The house across the street is roped off by police tape, and the police are still working the crime scene. They believe it was suicide, however. The kid apparently had a lot of problems, but I never thought he was in that bad of shape...

Freaked out

Posted on February 01, 2008
I don't know what to do. Apparently, I don't have a job anymore.I turned in my badge and key card at the office Christmas party just after the baby was born. I had told them I would be back to work in February. I went to visit this week and again reiterated that...

Maybe this water thing ain't so bad after all

Posted on January 30, 2008
Cora actually had a bath where she didn't scream bloody murder the entire time (plus 20 minutes afterwards). She seemed content to kick the water and then try to suck on the wet mat (it's amazing how far she can turn her head... she's like an owl).I just noticed, the thoracotomy scar and the scar from the chest tube are visible here...

I give up

Posted on January 28, 2008
Okay, I'm totally through with actually trying in law school. From now on, I'm just going to fall asleep during my exams, write half as much and turn in the exam 20 minutes early.Yes, that's right. I got my highest grade in law school on my Insurance exam...

Boobs (more TMI)

Posted on January 23, 2008
I am horribly traumatized after going evening gown shopping. Cinderella can't go to the ball if her boobs don't fit in her dress. Not that I didn't have such issues before pregnancy. My pre-pregnancy bust size was a 36DD, after all. Now it's like a 40ZZZ or something horrendous...

Finding more balance

Posted on January 20, 2008
I was putting away some laundry the other day, which had been piled up in a basket for quite some time, when I found that one of Cora's onesies was ripped in half. Immediately, I was pissed off that our damn dryer was eating clothes again. I marched off to present the evidence to Husband that we need a new dryer (the thing rips up my clothes all the time, tearing off snaps and buttons)...

Blog? What Blog?

Posted on January 17, 2008
Has it really been almost a week since my last post? This week has flown by, and been completely crazy. School, extra-curricular activities, functions, dates, and of course, Cora.Cora: She's now six weeks old. We finally got real smiles yesterday. She was smiley all day, and she is so alert and active...

Keeping it together

Posted on January 12, 2008
The week was pretty exhausting, but good too. I really like my classes, even if a couple will be pretty difficult. My Italian class is going to be a lot more work than I anticipated. It's basically a crash course in Italian, with four semesters of grammar crammed into one class...

Ugh

Posted on January 09, 2008
How do you know when you completely blow a final? Good indicators include:1. Filling up only half the blue book (and you write rather large);2. Finishing 20 minutes early;3. Falling asleep during the final (seriously, I lost a good five minutes there)Good thing I don't care, otherwise I'd be really upset...

Law School? I'm in Law School?

Posted on January 08, 2008
Definitely not ready to be back to school, but it's not all bad so far. I've now had all of my law school classes, and tomorrow I'll have my first Italian grammar class. My favorite class will definitely be Medical Liability. We're watching a movie tomorrow and Monday...

Homecoming (Part 2)

Posted on January 06, 2008
Cora has been sprung! The surgeon said we could take her home today, although he had wanted to keep her one more night for observation. But she's doing great. She's eating well, and most importantly, breathing well. Lots of lost snuggle time to make up for...

Day Twelve

Posted on January 06, 2008
Tonight's nurse is very nice. I was just thinking I was thirsty and should go get something from the cafeteria, and she brings in a pitcher of water. Awesome.Cora's doing well. Husband and I snuck out for a bite to eat and a beer with our friends during shift change, then we came back to the hospital and I took a nap while Husband snuggled with our daughter...

Relearning to Parent

Posted on January 05, 2008
Husband spent last night at the hospital with Cora, who was apparently back to her old self: about 2am she morphs from Sweet Little Bunny to Grumpy Little Gremlin. So, he's home sleeping while I'm on duty at the hospital.Cora's been slightly gremlin-esque today...

Day Eleven

Posted on January 05, 2008
I didn't get around to updating on Day Ten, I spent too much time at the hospital, sans laptop, and then home, finishing my insurance outline finally. I'm going to see about taking the insurance final on Wednesday and begging for mercy and getting a couple week extension on taking the tax final...

Law school reality check

Posted on January 03, 2008
Oh yeah, and I'm in law school. Reality check back to the land of mediocrity. Actually, this one falls below mediocrity and into the category of craptastic. Torts grade: C. Ouch. Way to kick the ol' GPA when it's already down. On one hand I probably should have waited to take the final and not taken it two weeks postpartum...

Day Nine

Posted on January 03, 2008
Cora is off the vent, and the only wiring she has left is the IV, the HR monitor and her little oxygen tube. Her nurse is going to try taking her off the oxygen a little later, and will also try giving her a bottle. It's possible she could even go home tomorrow! However, I'm not getting my hopes up, it's likely it will be over the weekend, or even the beginning of next week...

Day Eight

Posted on January 02, 2008
Today was a really good day. I think Cora woke up this morning and suddenly decided to get better. First, they were able to completely wean her from the dopamine this morning, her blood pressure has finally stabilized. Then, the doctors decided to take out her chest tube...

Day Seven

Posted on January 01, 2008
One week and counting. It will likely be at least another week, maybe longer, that Cora's in the hospital. They did the echo, and there were no issues with her heart, which was an enormous relief. The doctor was very encouraging this morning. She said it was no longer a matter of "if" Cora will recover, but rather how long it will take...

Day Six

Posted on December 31, 2007
Not much new to report. Things are about the same, unfortunately, with the blood pressure continuing to be a concern. Everyone had expected her to make more progress by now. The surgeon ordered an echo for tomorrow, to look for an explanation. They wanted to continue to wean her from the dopamine, but they haven't been able to without bottoming out her blood pressure...

Day Five

Posted on December 30, 2007
It seems that Cora is turning a corner, or at least that's what we hope. Her vitals have been more stable today, they're weaning her from the dopamine, and they've turned the suction off from her chest tube. They think the tube will come out tomorrow...

Down

Posted on December 29, 2007
Trying to keep a stiff upper lip, and not be the crazed emotional mom with the baby in the ICU, crying all the time. Yeah, trying, but haven't been largely successful. I'm relieved Cora's improving and so very thankful she made it through the surgery...

Day Four

Posted on December 29, 2007
The days are all starting to run together, but I think this is Cora's fourth day in the hospital. Again, we spent the night at the hospital in a sleep room, so we could be there if anything happened. We're at home right now, so we can shower, get a few things done, and take a few minutes to relax...

Recovering

Posted on December 28, 2007
Cora came out of surgery this morning, and is now trying to recover. The surgeon was able to take her top lobe, CCAM and all, and at least whatever happens next, that troublesome cyst is finally gone forever. It's not how we wanted it to happen, but we're dealing...

Surgery

Posted on December 28, 2007
Cora was taken in for emergency surgery just before 4 a.m. Things went bad during the night, they had to put in a chest tube, and all of this is putting stress on her heart. It'll be a couple hours before we know anything. Apparently there are actually three lobes in a lung, and the surgeon thinks the CCAM might be on both the top and middle lobes, not just the top lobe...

More waiting

Posted on December 27, 2007
Another night in the hospital, and likely to be a week more (if we're lucky). If Cora remains stable, they will likely do the thoracotomy, to remove the top right lobe (the one with the CCAM), on Monday. Both attending surgeons want to be there for the surgery...

A Cora Update

Posted on December 27, 2007
I got maybe another two hours of sleep, which I think made me even more tired, if that's possible. A friend with a one-year-old once described the exhaustion of having a baby as a special kind of tired: newborn tired. This puts it in a new category, kicked up a notch -- newborn baby critically ill in the ICU tired...
