Wal-Mart Settles Clerk's Death Inquiry for $2 Million, Avoids Criminal Charges

The retailing giant Wal-Mart, has reportedly agreed to invest $2 million to improve safety at its 92 stores in New York, as settlement over the inquiry into the stampede death of a temporary clerk on Black Friday, 2008.

Had criminal charges been brought against the retailer, it is likely the company would only have had to pay $10,000 in fines, if convicted.

However, this settlement will provide for the development and implementation of an improved crowd-management plan for sales held the day after Thanksgiving - also known as "Black Friday."

Included in the settlement is the establishment of a $400,000 fund for compensation of victims, and the provision of $1.5 million to local non-profits and social services programs.
