Personal Data Made Public on Tens of Thousands of Florida Students

Personal Data Made Public on Tens of Thousands of Florida Students

Flaws in the Princeton Review's Webiste at Fault

Tens of thousands of Florida students had their personal data and test scores published online, without their knowledge. The information was available for seven weeks before anyone noticed.

The test-preparatory firm, The Princeton Review, accidentally published the data as a result of a flaw in the configuration of the website. Hundreds of files were easily accessible, including internal communications. The information was found accidentally by another test-preparatory firm doing competitive research. Reportedly, one file alone contained information on approximately 34,000 Sarasota public school students. And the names and birth dates of 74,000 students in the Fairfax school system were contained and publicly available in another file.

The information on the site should have been password protected, but that protection is thought to have been lost when the company transferred its site in June, to a new internet host.
