Stamford, CT: (May-16-08) The state of Connecticut brought charges against John Alden Life and Time Insurance, two health insurers, alleging that they violated federal laws when they processed claims involving pre-existing health conditions. Federal officials said that the suit was a result of a state led investigation into the business practices of John Alden Life and Time, which was formerly known as Fortis. They suit claimed that the two insurance companies failed to adopt reasonable standards for the prompt processing of claims for short-term health policies. Sources stated that Assurant, their parent company based in Milwaukee, issues health insurance policies through the firms and a third subsidiary, Union Security. Court papers show that Union Security was not included in this case.

As part of a settlement reached in the case, the two health insurers paid a combined $2.1 million in fines to the state as well as agreed to reimburse customers $920,000 for alleged abuses in processing claims. As per the terms of the settlement, which covers the department's investigation into claims filed between 2000 and 2005 and the examination between 2005 and 2007, the company admitted no wrongdoing.
