Detroit, MI: (Feb-19-08) Zack Weishuhn and Patrick Tomsic, two police officers, brought charges against the city, alleging that they were slandered by city officials after stopping former mayoral chief of staff Christine Beatty for speeding in 2004. The officers sued the city, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings, accusing them of making what they called disparaging comments about them after the traffic stop. The two claimed that they pulled Beatty over for speeding Jun. 21, 2004, and that she responded violently, using expletives. The officers sued after Bully-Cummings publicly said they harassed Beatty, and Kilpatrick told a radio station that the incident seemed like a setup.As part of a settlement reached, the Detroit City Council voted to approve a $25,000 mediation recommendation to the two officers. Records show that the city council had twice rejected the $25,000 settlement. However, council members unanimously voted to accept the mediation panel’s recommendation.
