Honolulu, HI: (Feb-08-08) An unnamed non-native Hawaiian student brought charges against Kamehameha Schools, alleging that their admissions policy gave preference to native Hawaiians and was therefore discriminatory in nature. Records show that the hotly disputed federal civil rights lawsuit received much public attention and caused a controversy among Kamehameha Schools supporters who believed the challenge struck at the more than century-old admissions policy and the heart of the charitable trust's mission to educate children of Hawaiian ancestry.Sources close to the case stated that in a recent development, the charitable trust offered an out-of-court settlement, just days before the US Supreme Court was to decide whether to hear the case. As part of the settlement reached, Kamehameha Schools, a tax-exempt charitable trust, agreed to pay $7 million to resolve the discrimination lawsuit. Initially, the school kept the deal confidential, but legal counsel decided to declare the payout, after Internal Revenue Service officials stated that Kamehameha Schools, as a tax-exempt charitable trust, cannot keep the figure confidential.
