Kansas City, MO: (Feb-28-08) The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brought a lawsuit against CHEMCENTRAL Midwest Corporation of Kansas City, alleging that the company violated the federal Clean Air Act by failing to identify chemical hazards and failing to design and maintain a safe facility. The charges were filed by the EPA Region 7 in connection with a massive fire and explosion at CHEMCENTRAL in 2007. Records show that the explosion occurred when CHEMCENTRAL workers were transferring "Indopol," a fuel additive used in sealants, coatings, lubricants, cling film and adhesives. Indopol is a trade name for polybutene. Following the explosion, the EPA filed a complaint in July 2007 for alleged violations at the industrial chemical distributor facility. Prior to the fire, CHEMCENTRAL distributed industrial chemicals from the facility. Region 7 officials stated that its on scene coordinators and staff oversaw a large scale response to the fire. The EPA provided assistance to emergency responders and conducted extensive air monitoring, including deploying the agency's flying chemical detection system. The EPA also took samples from locations outside of the site and at nearby schools.

As part of a settlement reached, the company agreed to pay a $225,000 fine to resolve the civil complaint filed against the company. Additionally, it also agreed to reimburse EPA's costs of $150,713 for responding to the blaze. [YOSEMITE EPA: CHEMICAL PLANT EXPLOSION]
