Bay City, MI: (May-15-08) The Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department brought charges against Michigan Sugar, a grower-owned sugar processing cooperative, alleging that there were emissions from beet pulp dryers at company factories. The federal complaint stated that some of the violations date back more than 20 years and that the company violated federal and state clean air laws by building a pulp dryer and increasing operating hours without obtaining the appropriate permits. Experts said that sugar beet pulp, a byproduct, is processed in dryers that generate volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide.As part of a settlement reached in the case, Michigan Sugar agreed to pay a $210,000 civil penalty and upgrade its clean-air technology to resolve pollution violations. Additionally, though the company did not admit wrongdoing, but considering the settlement the best way to resolve the case, agreed to use new equipment that will reduce emissions to nearly zero.
