MySpace Spam Lawsuit

Spammers to pay $230 million settlement in e-mailing lawsuit.

MySpace Spam

San Francisco, CA: (May-16-08) News Corp-owned MySpace, a social networking website, brought charges against Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines, a pair of spammers, accusing them of flooding the online community with email that tricked them into linking to sales pitches or websites that earned the men "per hit" payments. The suit stated that some of the spammed websites led to adult material, which jeopardized young users. MySpace attorneys stated that Wallace and Rines crafted emails to appear as though they were from friends of users of the social networking site whose messages could be trusted; and that the duo sent over 725,000 email messages to MySpace members in violation of US anti-spam law.

As part of a settlement reached in the case, federal district court judge Audrey Collins ordered the two to pay MySpace $230 million, setting a record breaking punishment for such Internet abuses. MySpace officials said that MySpace use has climbed in the past year while spam at the website has decreased, showing that efforts such as the lawsuit are helping reduce the problem.
