Mississippi Antitrust Costs Microsoft $100 Million

Mississippi businesses, individuals, schools and local government will reportedly benefit from a $100 million windfall, courtesy of Microsoft, as they share in the recent settlement negotiated with the state.

Jan Schaefer, spokeswoman for Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, said “Anyone who made a purchase from January 1, 1996, to today is eligible for a share of the money.”

Reportedly, the terms of the settlement will pay $40 million to the state of Mississippi within 40 days and up to $60 million will be divided between consumers, businesses, public school districts and government entities.

The suit was just one of many class actions filed against Microsoft on behalf of consumers, over allegations that the software giant was abusing its power by tying its Internet Explorer browser to its Windows operating system.
