Free Speech Lawsuit

Canterbury agrees to pay $60,000 settlement in civil rights lawsuit.

Free Speech

Canterbury, CT: (May-20-08) Jeanette Kildea filed a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union against the first selectman, alleging that he unlawfully banned public comment at Board of Selectmen meetings. Sources familiar with the negotiations stated that the two sides had reached a settlement agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, Jeanette Kildea was awarded $60,000 by the city of Canterbury, resolving the free speech battle between the two. Officials stated that a new first selectman later reinstated public participation in the Board of Selectmen meetings. In a recent announcement, Kildea donated $5,000 of it to the town library.
