Class Action Filed Over Fees for Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XI

A class action lawsuit was filed this week in California against Square-Enix, alleging unfair business practices relateing to fees and payments for their multimedia online game Final Fantasy XI.

The lawsuit alleges "[Square-Enix] engaged in various levels of deceptive advertising, unfair business practices, and fraudulent concealment with respect to the online games at the point of purchase."

The unfair business practices allegations stem from claims that Square was not transparent regarding monthly fees, penalties for late payment, interest charges on late payment, charges that took place after the suspension of an account, termination of game data for late payment, and other various things. The plaintiff, Esther Leung of San Francisco, says that Square "lied about or concealed" the details related to these charges, whereas they should have been disclosed in full, when she signed up.

An estimated 100,000 people could take part in this class action, and the suit is seeking $5 million in damages.
