Farmed Salmon on US Menus Could Contain Banned Chemicals

FDA Urged to Increase Testing of Chilean Farmed Salmon

Earlier this month a German consumer protection agency reported finding banned chemicals in Chilean fish, and salmon in particular. Antifungals and antiparasitics currently banned in the US and Europe were among the chemicals detected in the farmed salmon. Some of the banned chemicals are potentially carcinogenic.

As a consequence of these findings, and because salmon is a major menu item in the US, consumer advocacy groups and environmentalists are urging the FDA to increase their testing of Chilean farm-raised salmon. Additional concerns have been raised over the use of antibiotics to ward off infections in the penned fish.

The farmed salmon industry is worth $2 billion a year to Chile, however the industry is currently in crisis because of a viral outbreak that can kill the salmon, but is not harmful to humans.
