Australia Lawsuit

Reported $4.5 million settlement for wrongful deportation.

Australia

In 2001, Vivian Alvarez Solon was unlawfully removed to the Philippines after an immigration officer wrongly presumed she was a sex slave and an illegal immigrant. A social worker discovered her on the streets, physically injured and apparently destitute. Solon told immigration officers she was an Australian citizen and that she wanted to stay in the country, but she was removed to the Philippines. Solon filed a lawsuit against the country for wrongful deportation. The Australian Immigration Minister said the compensation sum was confidential, but 'The Age' believes Solon was awarded $4.5 million. (Dec-01-06) [THE AGE: WRONGFUL DEPORTATION]
