Vacationing

Posted on May 17, 2009
We leave in the afternoon for Mexico! Hurray! I remember when vacationing was so much more spontaneous. For this vacation, I:1. Purchased interruption/cancellation and medical insurance. How grown-up and lawyer-like.2. Registered our trip with the State Dept...

Life after law school

Posted on May 12, 2009
1. Graduation weekend and partying like a rock star. Friday after graduation, I had a party at my house where we killed two fifths of bourbon, then off to the "homo bar" after everyone left to continue knocking back drinks, including several rounds of shots, and dancing the night away...

No More Law School

Posted on May 06, 2009
I am officially done with law school. (insert cheer here)I took my last final (for Family Law) this morning. I cleaned out my locker at the law school and took off the lock. I stopped by my former office and dropped off my key and said adieu to my former boss and coworkers...

Continuing the Fail

Posted on April 30, 2009
The International Law exam today was disastrous. I know, it's my own fault. I let myself get all worked up yesterday about the stupid NPO grade that I barely even looked at the material, and then completely freaked during the exam. I mean, like, completely...

Mid-finals update

Posted on April 29, 2009
1. International law turns out to be a closed note-closed book exam, which we were all shocked and appalled to find out last week. The last two classes I had with this professor, also international courses, were open book-open note, and so we had all just assumed...

Last week of school!

Posted on April 21, 2009
EVER! Okay, probably not ever. I'm sadistic enough that I'll probably go back for a PhD someday, either history or poly sci. I've even been considering a distance learning program in international dispute resolution, but probably not for a few years...

Retail Therapy

Posted on April 17, 2009
After the week I've had, I decided to indulge. That's a 4" stiletto heel, 1" platform kind of retail therapy. Better than drinking alone. Although probably more expensive.Seriously, it's been a week of complete suck. I'd go more into it, but I don't have the energy...

Fighting Crime

Posted on April 07, 2009
This past weekend I did a ride along with the local police department (our city has about 250,000 people to give you an idea of the action). Those of us doing the internship with the prosecutors office got to go. They sent us with second shift on Friday, in the more hoppin' part of town (i...

Ask a Mom in Law School: Balancing Schedules, and Interviewing

Posted on March 22, 2009
Cross-posted at Ms. JD.Spring Break has come to an end! I'm seven weeks away from completing my JD, and I have a rambunctious toddler who will be reeking havoc at graduation. Life is good. So, I've been asked to impart more wisdom concerning being both a parent and a law student...

Finding Satisfaction

Posted on March 17, 2009
http://www.classictvquotes.com/gallery/ted.htmlBefore I started law school, I had this idea that I was going to be a brilliant, rich and important international business lawyer, jet-setting around the world, furthering the goals of American imperialism through its capitalist endeavors...

Happy Spring Break!

Posted on March 16, 2009
Hat modelToysTormenting Bella with her loveI'm posting at 3am. Why? It's Spring Break! And I don't have to go to class. Yippee!I actually made it out to see a movie tonight. I went for the geek choice (Watchmen), rather than an Oscar pick. Awesome movie, that stays very true to the graphic novel...

Decisions

Posted on March 11, 2009
I had the lunch interview today, which was interesting. We had lunch at this really swanky restaurant that I haven't been to in over 7 years (I actually met my husband at this place, the location of our friends' wedding reception). Lunch was quite good, and I really like the attorney...

Wanted

Posted on March 07, 2009
Somebody wants me. It's nice to be wanted.I got a job offer from the dude I interviewed with a couple weeks ago, the one 2 hours away in the NE part of the state. It is a really good offer.I still have another interview on Wednesday, which is really promising since that dude is taking me to lunch at a really swanky place, so I figure he must be serious about me...

Weekend FAIL

Posted on February 21, 2009
It's been a pretty shitty weekend.Friday morning I called to confirm the interview I had scheduled in BFE. I figured I was not driving two hours one way to find out they had forgotten about me and dude was on vacation or something. Good thing I called...

Goings on

Posted on February 18, 2009
1. Rejection. Didn't get a call-back from fed. magistrate judge (no surprise there), but the one that hurts my feelings is the rejection letter from the FBI. Sigh. To think of all the illicit drugs I could have done in college and didn't because I was "going to join the FBI...

Valentines weekend

Posted on February 15, 2009
We had a good weekend. My mom took Cora overnight so we could have some grown-up time. Good timing too, because Cora was in a seriously foul mood yesterday, and we were definitely glad to be shipping her off to Grandma's. So, we had a lazy day yesterday, did a little homework, watched some TV...

Fighting crime

Posted on February 12, 2009
I figure I might as well blog about my suppression hearing experience since I have to write a paper at the end of the semester about all this jazz anyway. In short, we won. Not thanks to any great lawyering by me. When the response to defendant's argument comes down to, uh, no, dude, that's not how criminal procedure works (here's my crim pro outline if you'd like the black-letter law), well, it's not really a big deal...

Licensing and practice

Posted on February 11, 2009
I'm partially licensed this semester to (mal?)practice under the supervision of the prosecutor's office. It's fun times. I've got my first suppression hearing tomorrow. I'm laying some totality-of-the-circumstances smack down. I'm so excited, I'm such a nerd...

Things Overheard at Dinner

Posted on February 08, 2009
Cora: [drops the crayon on the floor] Uh oh!Me: [picks up the crayon] Yes, "uh oh." Cora: [drops the sippy cup on the floor] Uh oh!Me: [picks up the sippy cup] No, that's not an "uh oh"! You did that on purpose.Cora: Perrsss. Me: That's right. Purpose...

Happenings

Posted on February 07, 2009
Thought I'd take a break from the lameness that is spending my Saturday night outlining. Even worse, it's re-outlining. My friend and I split the readings for nonprofit orgs to outline and I outlined my portion on Thursday night only for it to disappear into oblivion, now I get to re-do it...

Family bonding

Posted on January 31, 2009
My BFF (and Cora's godfather) is in town visiting, and has been staying with us. She generally sobs uncontrollably the first time she sees him, then warms up to him after awhile. She does the same thing with her grandfather. It isn't stranger anxiety -- she generally flirts with every other man she comes in contact with...

Ice

Posted on January 29, 2009
I haven't been to school in three days. We were on delay Tuesday and today, and canceled all together on Wednesday. We had snow and an ice storm. Fortunately, we have electricity and running water, not everyone in the city does. This one doesn't seem as bad as the ice storm we had in 2003 though...

It's a brand new year

Posted on January 21, 2009
Hey, I guess while I'm waiting endlessly at O'Hare, the least I could do is blog. Am I going to finish my Crim Pro reading for tomorrow? Hell no! But I figure I could break my lengthy hiatus.I've been in Chicago since yesterday. I took the PMF exam this morning...

Epiphanies

Posted on December 30, 2008
As I'm sitting in my office, doing research on an issue of civil procedure where I'm finding nothing useful to our position, and thinking this would be a lot easier if I'd actually learned something in Civ Pro (our prof hadn't taught the course in 30 years and didn't intend to suddenly start then), I began to daydream wistfully about New Year's...

Christmas Carol-blogging

Posted on December 25, 2008
As a gift to my readers on this blessed evening, I give you a bunny singing "Silent Night," a capella. It's the bunny, I swear. (Christmas miracles and all that.) There would have been (electric) piano accompaniment, but my stupid amp has gone out, so the bunny is a little off key...

Finished

Posted on December 21, 2008
I finished my seminar paper on Friday afternoon, in all its glorious mediocrity. It has been turned in, and life can go on. Husband proofed my science, and I had to remove entire paragraphs because, apparently, I don't know "how science works." Bah...

Christmastime in Hell

Posted on December 17, 2008
div style="text-align: justify;"Only law students understand the special kind of hell that is finals week(s). How taking a four-credit-hour course means you get to sit and take a four-hour-long final exam. That's curved so you get a worse grade than you would otherwise have gotten because you had the misfortune of taking the same class as all of the smart people...

Saving my breath

Posted on December 15, 2008
I know this is difficult for people to imagine but, even though I went to school to become a lawyer, I'm not madly in love with the sound of my own voice. I also have the unfortunate tendency to lose my voice if I use it too much, so I prefer to save it for when it serves a purpose (especially when I need it to sing)...

Too much husband

Posted on December 14, 2008
Husband has decided to take a weekend position at the hospital. Which means he will only be working two nights a week instead of three (but still gets paid for three) and both of those nights will be during the weekend (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). This is all going to end badly...
