How to (Not) Get Caught Growing Marijuana

Posted on July 16, 2008
This educational video shows how law enforcement find marijuana grow fields. The videographer has an entire DVD series. Volume 1 of "Never Get Busted Again" was reviewed here. I imagine police have seen the same videos as perps. But probably not ever police officer has seen the videos, so maybe there is some utility in them for drug dealers...

Is Rahmatullah Naikzad a Member of the Taliban?

Posted on July 16, 2008
He's undoubtedly a part of the Taliban's propaganda arm. See here for proof (gruesome photos of Taliban soldiers killing women while Naikzad takes perverted photos and video) (via Kip).

What Right Does Heller Recognize?

Posted on July 15, 2008
In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court held "that the District's ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense...

Vacation Talk

Posted on July 15, 2008
I was in Cabo San Lucas with a group of friends last week. [Outside the swimming pool.] "Why are you wearing your t-shit?" "I get sun burned really badly.." "You need to get a base tan." "I don't tan. I burn. Then peel. Then I am pale white again." "But you have to get a base tan...

Get Better Friends

Posted on July 15, 2008
Here's a long-winded explanation of when you should - or should not - pick up the check. If you have good friends, you really don't need to worry about this. Sometimes I pay, sometimes you pay. If business is good for me, I pay more often. Not because I have to, but because I want to...

Law v. Facts in Bloch v. Frischholz

Posted on July 14, 2008
Bloch v. Frischholz (here) is a great case illustrating issue framing. Should one frame the issue using law, or facts? Easterbrooks frames the case using law, and disposes of the case in six pages. Truth it, Bloch was not a difficult case. In Bloch, a Jewish plaintiff sued money damages after her condo board told her that she could not...

Linda Greenhouse: Drama Queen

Posted on July 14, 2008
Linda Greenhouse describes her "most surreal moment" in this New York Times article: It had to have been the day and night I spent in the Supreme Court press room on Dec. 12, 2000, waiting for the court to hand down its decision in the presidential election case, Bush v...

Postville, Iowa Immigration Raid

Posted on July 13, 2008
In May, 2008, ICE agents raided a kosher meat-packing plant. (Video report.) Most of the workers were illegal immigrants from Guatemala. Around 400 illegal immigrants were charged with federal crimes. The workers were not simply charged with being in the United States illegally...

How the Other Half Lives

Posted on July 13, 2008
This essay is a scary reminder of the way way federal prosecutors, federal judges, and defense lawyers treat their indigent clients. "Move the meat," I can hear them all saying to one another. Humans are meat moving down the assembly line that calls itself "due process of law...

"The Shame of Postville, Iowa"

Posted on July 13, 2008
The Times has this powerful editorial exploring the mistreatment (alleged) illegal aliens faced in one Iowa court.

If I Were Gay...

Posted on July 11, 2008
...these pictures would reaaaaaly make me mad. This photo is my favorite. It captures the "essence" of the affair. It's high art - even if it's unintentional satire. Sometimes genius is accidental. Query: If marriage must be kept hetero-only for procreation's sake...

Kid is No Cookie Monster

Posted on July 11, 2008
A few days ago, a kid was accused of giving drug-laced cookies to cops: A teenager is suspected of delivering baskets of drug-laced treats to about a dozen police departments in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to police who charged him Tuesday with LSD possession...

Modern Pharmacology is a Scam

Posted on July 09, 2008
Why can't I have steroids? Why can't I smoke marijuana? Because that stuff is bad for me? But what about all of these "wonder drugs" that kill people? (Via S.B.) Incidentally, people will take whatever pill their doctors (who are bought off by pharmaceutical reps) give them...

Why Courts Must Defer to Legislatures

Posted on July 09, 2008
Elected officials, after all, are intelligent people who carefully consider the issues: A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon. County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts...

Immorality: It's What's For Dinner

Posted on July 08, 2008
I offended everyone at the dinner table a few nights ago when I said, "If there is a God, we are all going to Hell for eating meat." Eating meat is one of the only immoral things I do. When you see the suffering that factory-farmed animals endure, how can you eat meat? How can you be an accomplice to...

Non-Sequitur of the Day

Posted on July 08, 2008
"Fed plans new rules to protect future homebuyers": The mortgage rules will crack down on a range of shady lending practices that has burned many of the nation's riskiest "subprime" borrowers - those with spotty credit or low incomes - who were hardest hit by the housing and credit debacles...

Eyewitness Identication: A Scary Game of Chance

Posted on July 07, 2008
Who's down for a game of Russian Roulette? I'll bring the .357, you bring the bullets. Let's play? No? You think I'm crazy? Then why do you do this to other people? In the typical police line-up, police put a suspect's photograph on a sheet with five other people with similar characteristics...

Maximum Possible Weekly Fat Gain?

Posted on July 06, 2008
How much weight can a person can in a week? I weighed-in at an even 190 before leaving for vacation last Sunday. I'm guessing I'll weigh 198 pounds tomorrow, with 2-or-so of that being water weight gain, with the balance being pure adipose. This isn't unreasonable...

Made to Stick

Posted on July 04, 2008
During law school I worked as a research assistant. One of my duties was to write 3-4 page executive summaries of books and law review articles. Most books - even very dense ones - can be summarized in a few pages. Of course, you can't fully develop what is contained in the book...

If you're a parent who thinks you might be too paranoid because you worry about letting your children leave your sight, read one: Stefan [and his sister] Tahisha ... began tossing a ball back and forth to each other. At some point, the ball rolled down a hill and toward two satellite dishes that were located on the grounds of...
