Cardboard Office

Posted on April 30, 2009
When you look around at offices and space, have you ever noticed that only advertising executives and high tech people get to have all of the design and architecture fun? What is it with lawyers that we seem to gravitate toward maybe competent but otherwise sterile design...

What About A1940s Texas Grain Silo For A Home Office?

Posted on April 28, 2009
Sure this is a wonderful example of adaptive reuse. It would also make a wonderful home office. In 2007, Gruene Homestead Inn purchased the 1940s grain silo and remodeled the interior and exterior. The Silo includes one bedroom and one bathroom in a loft-type setup for the rental price of $175/$210 a night...

Jiffy Lube Law Blog

Posted on April 26, 2009
I am trying out a new blog on Solo Practice University. Some of the articles are re-purposed from the years of work and the, approaching 2,000 posts, on this blog. However, the blog will be more tightly focused on highlighting the niche practice of law, and mainly to provide examples of niche practices as I find the...

FREAK OUT! Le Freak By Chic

Posted on April 25, 2009
I do not know but that disco best describes or relates to the practice of law. You might not like that fact, but still when preparing for trial or a weighty court hearing, I think of Le Freak by Chic. Anyway, the Worldwide Home Office is continuing to boogie this Saturday...

Gwen Dickey (Rose Royce) - Car Wash

Posted on April 25, 2009
I do not know why, exactly, but when work gets a little overwhelming at the worldwide home office, I listen to Car Wash. Something about relating the job to physical work. Something about "it is better than digging a ditch". Now you can relate that or compare that to the practice of law.

Ashcroft Opens A New Type Of Law Firm?

Posted on April 24, 2009
As reported in the Austin Business Journal, former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft has started a new concept law firm. Partnering with a consulting firm founded by John Ashcroft in 2005, the Aschcroft Group, the law firm will focus on homeland security, corporate governance, data security, federal enforcement and regulatory matters, and corporate finance...

The Law School Scam?

Posted on April 23, 2009
There is a lot of truth to this video contending there is a law school scam. I personally think there is a law school scam, but probably not for the reasons stated in this video. For you see, you can argue that a lot of law school graduates are not getting employed immediately after law school, and that traditional law job are falling, but I hardly think it is because of India and China or the relatively small increase in law school seats...

Do You Go To A "Mormon Friendly" Law School?

Posted on April 22, 2009
Do not get me wrong. I think it is fine that a law school is "Mormon friendly", provided that it is not antagonistic toward other groups. Given the number of Catholic law school in this country, how could I complain. I will point out, however, that Catholic law schools are typically private law schools...

The New U.S. News Law School Rankings

Posted on April 20, 2009
For categorical reasons I listed this post and the U.S. News Rankings under education, but it should not be. The rankings really have nothing to do with education. Predicting a law schools ranking is a bit like trying to determine what your FICO score is likely to be in advance...

TexaPlex

Posted on April 20, 2009
There has been a lot of talk, thanks to Governor Perry, about Texas leaving the Union. Although I think this is more than silly, here is a video which shows just how dynamic Texas really is in comparison to the rest of the country. I think if you are considering a low cost, lower tax place to start a law practice or grow a practice, this is the place.

UCI Law Rises To The Top Of The Heap

Posted on April 19, 2009
The University of California - Irvine School of Law, which will not even open its doors until the fall, has already become the "most selective of any law school in the nation". In a news release the law school states it accepted only 4 percent of the 2,741 people who applied for admission to its founding class, compared to a 7 percent acceptance rate at Yale and 9 percent at Stanford...

Thinking Inside The Box

Posted on April 19, 2009
Thinking outside of the box? I must admit I do not think I have ever appreciated the term. To me it is kind of a throw away term or saying. Much like hearing another person on a design show mispronounce the word Voilà! Most discard the 'v' sound. Others ignore the 'w' sound...

Overcoming The Niche Bitch

Posted on April 16, 2009
Okay, the title is a little salacious. A little bawdy, maybe. A tad vexing. Thought provoking, I hope. We all know a niche law practice is what is best, yet everybody, especially law students and recent graduates grapple with their choices and their direction in life...

Sorry I Have Not Posted In A While

Posted on April 15, 2009
I am sorry I have not posted in a while. I have been busy and I have been trying to work myself through a post that is longer than usual about overcoming the niche bitch. Hope to have that posted soon.

1,700 And Growing

This blog has surpassed 1,700 posts. That is a lot of content. It represents a good deal of time and a whole lot of thought. But, I appreciate your readership.

You traditional law firm types

Posted on April 15, 2009
You traditional law firm types might be interested in this. If in all of your commuting and running around in your real life hamster wheel you do not get enough face time with green space, a group of students Dalhousie School of Architecture ? David Gallaugher, Kevin James, and Jacob Jebailey ? have decided to remedy this problem with a street-ready grass-lined wheel...

Law School Should Be Shorter, Better And Cheaper!

Posted on April 11, 2009
Mark A. Cohen of the MinnLawyer Blog poses an interesting challenge for the teaching of law. His point is that "the traditional model of the law profession is starting to crack and crumble under the shrinking number of high-paying lawyer jobs available to support heavy law student debt loads of $100,000 or more"...

Aircraft Closing Niche

Posted on April 08, 2009
In exploring a niche market you can be sure of one thing. Where particular and specific types of product or goods are being sold, and large sums of money are changing hands, there are going to be legal services and opinions issued to protect the buyers, sellers and lenders involved...

Get Accepted To Law School Without Taking The LSAT

Posted on April 08, 2009
According to the ABA Law Journal, the University of Alabama School of Law has followed the University of Michigan School of Law and the University of Illinois College of law in a pilot program to admit honor students without the need of the student taking the LSAT...

Under Billing - Do Not Be A Cheap Date

Posted on April 07, 2009
Peter Olson at Solo In Chicago has a good post concerning under billing. It is a disaster that I believe grips too many younger lawyers and lawyers just going out on their own. It is a hard lesson and an expensive lesson from which to learn, and you would do well to learn from others and avoid the practice altogether...

Forget It! I Am Not Going To Marry One Of The People Who Comment On My Blog!

Posted on April 05, 2009
It is not that I do not like you, or that I do not appreciate your efforts. I do. (Oops, that is the wrong word to use). It is just that I have been married to my girlfriend for a long, long time. Going on 28 years, four children, a mortgage and a law practice together, I just cannot get that close to a commenter...

10 Ways For Law Firms To Go Green

Posted on April 02, 2009
Here is the general truth. Law firm's by and large are just wasteful with money, with resources, in directing their energies, and much of this is simply not helpful to our environment. Worse for the law firm it costs money -- tons and tons of money. It costs money that can be used on better choices...
