: Legal Pad | LACourt win allows comic to continue busting on her in-laws
By Richard Binder
It's official: secure in the protection of the First Amendment, you can make jokes about your in-laws.
Sunda Croonquist, a comic who lives in Beverly Hills, was sued two years ago by her in-laws because they claimed her material was holding them up to public ridicule. Croonquist was sued in a New Jersey court since two of the plaintiffs live there. U.S. District Judge Mary L. Cooper issued a 21-page ruling last Friday in which she stated that Croonquist's jokes fall under the category of protected speech.
Citing one of the examples in the suit, Cooper said that Croonquist's joke about her sister-in-law having a voice that sounds like a cat in heat was "colorful, figurative rhetoric that reasonable minds would not take to be factual."
Mark Zafrin, Croonquist's husband, is a partner in the law firm that successfully represented her. Thanksgiving's going to be a little awkward this year.
