Failure to Stop at a Red Light Probably the Cause
A commuter train crashed head on into a freight train on Friday, killing 25 people, and injuring 135, in what is reportedly the deadliest rail disaster in US history.The accident happened in the San Fernando Valley. The Metrolink train was carrying 220 passengers, en route from Union Station in Los Angeles to Ventura County. While no definitive cause has yet been established, it appears that the engineer onboard the Metrolink train failed to stop for a red light. The engineer is believed to be among the dead.
Firefighters and rescue crews were recovering bodies until late Saturday. Two data recorders were recovered from the passenger train, and one data recorder and a video recorder from the freight train.
