New York, NY: (Feb-28-08) The State Department of Environmental Conservation brought charges against Hess Corp., alleging that the company had petroleum storage violations at its facility. The suit claimed that an investigation revealed that there were more than 100 violations at Hess' oil storage facility in Brooklyn, which consists of 10 underground and above ground tanks holding more than 28 million gallons of petroleum. Sources stated that the violations go back to the 1990s and early 2000s and involve noncompliance with storage regulations as well as the repair of a bulkhead without proper permits. DEC officials stated that all of the violations at the Brooklyn storage facility have been addressed, while the problems discovered during inspections of the gas stations, including inventory, records and equipment maintenance, are more recent and are in the process of being fixed.

As part of a settlement reached, Hess Corp. will pay a $1.1 million fine for petroleum storage violations and fund a $300,000 wetlands restoration project under the agreement with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. In addition to the $1.1 million fine, the order includes $300,000 to be administered by the Nature Conservancy as part of a three-year project to restore and manage wetlands in the Hudson River Estuary. Hess spokespersons claimed that they will continue working with the DEC to ensure their facilities comply fully with environmental laws and regulations. DEC officials stated that because gas stations and oil-storage facilities can be found in nearly every neighborhood, it is critical they adhere to the stringent requirements the state has in place to protect the public and the environment.
