Georgia Natural Gas to pay customers $2.5 million in settlement.

GNG Marketing Violations

Atlanta, GA: (Mar-06-08) A lawsuit was brought against natural gas marketer Georgia Natural Gas, after several consumers filed complaints against it over the marketer’s variable rate plans. Sources close to the case stated that the parties had reached a settlement in the suit, which a majority of the Georgia Public Service Commission voted to accept.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, affected Georgia Natural Gas customers up to the first 100,000 will receive a $25 credit if they switched to another plan between Dec. 1, 2006 and Jul. 31, 2008. The total amount of credits will be capped at $2.5 million. If more than 100,000 qualify for the credits, the $25 credit will be reduced accordingly. The agreement stipulated that any remaining funds not credited to customers would be disbursed as the Commission determines.

Additionally, the company agreed to not object to the Commission’s issuance of a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NOPR) to require that marketers provide notice to existing customers when they create new pricing plans and when they retire existing plans.
