G.K.I. Foods agrees to $43,000 settlement after disposing production waste water into a sanitary waste water system.

Waste Water Pollution

Livingston County, MI: (Feb-28-08) The Department of Environmental Quality brought charges against G.K.I. Foods, Inc. of Livingston County, alleging that the company made illegal discharges into Michigan's waters. The suit claimed that the manufacturer of chocolate candy and granola products, wrongfully discharged production waste water to its sanitary waste water system which ultimately failed due to the build up of fats, oils, and grease. The system's failure led to untreated waste water being discharged to the county drain located behind the facility. The Department of Environmental Quality stated that illegal discharges in the water put the environment and the health of the community at risk. The suit was filed to ensure that environmental laws are followed and that Michigan's lakes and streams are kept clean and safe.

As part of a settlement reached, company officials claimed that GKI Foods will dispose of its sanitary sewage and liquid waste in accordance with law, provide the DEQ with plans for the installation of long-term disposal systems, and apply for the appropriate permits in the future. Additionally, the company will also reimburse the State of Michigan for its enforcement costs of $32,807 and pay a civil fine of $11,000. [STATE OF MICHIGAN: WASTE WATER POLLUTION]
