Smoking, Melting iPods Reported

An investigation into consumer complaints of Apple iPods overheating has identified some 800 incidents filed with the CPSC which include personal injury and property damage.

According to a recent report that aired on a Seattle TV station, the CPSC received complaints as far back as 2005, when an iPod overheated and caused damage to a home and harm to a young boy. Some complaints tell of iPods setting off smoke detectors, catching fire, even melting.

The incidents are not restricted to one model of iPod apparently, but include both older and newer versions of the popular gadget.

The suspected cause of the problems is the lithium ion batteries. In 2006 millions of lithium ion batteries were recalled by Apple and Dell due to overheating problems in laptop computers, and some computers reportedly caught fire.

CPSC estimates suggest that consumers have purchased more than 175 million iPods since the item was introduced. As yet, Apple has not issued a product recall.
