Ptolemics

Posted on April 25, 2009
Opera WeekStarted off the week Tuesday going to a Ptolemy dinner party hosted by the fabulous Johnny Kolb who greated everyone wearing a top hat and a cane. (or maybe that was the devil at faust). Fixed some of the best lamb chops I?ve encountered. Tender almost filet like, with a very light lamb flavor that complimented but did not overwhelm the senses...

Are we done?

Posted on April 19, 2009
I'm wondering if the technological innovation of the human race as reached a long term lower slop of a plateau. I remember discussions that Moore's law (a thesis about computing power) would never be violated and that's come to pass. The one major development that may make things continue on a path of social development based on increasing per capita energy expenditure would be effective fusion technology, which seems feasibly on the long term (ie 2050+) horizon...

Margaritaville

Posted on April 18, 2009
Everyone needs to watch the South Park Margaritaville episode. I think its a masterpiece of economic theory. The solution really is a simple " we need more money" at least to fix the current problem. Along with regulation of credit to clamp down on inflationary effect.

Pirate Week!

Posted on April 16, 2009
Was reassured that the US can still take down pirates under a Democratic administration, but maybe they'll punish the troops for doing their duty. Was thinking of starting a political career, was thinking of all the opportunities likely to open up for republicans politicians over the next several decades...

Sick Week

Posted on April 06, 2009
Joining the throngs of sick week fans. Last week I was pretty down most of the week. I did manage towards the end of the week to make it to the mpact outlet at the tower room which was a really swanky business like atmosphere place. Still was a little coughy so couldn't really enjoy it to the fullest extent...

MPACT Week

Posted on March 28, 2009
Thanks to Mpact my social / networking calender was jam packed this week. Tuesday there was a pretty full happy hour at on the borders. Fortunately I ordered margaritas when I came in cause they took thirty minutes to arrive. It was really crowded though which shocked me given the rainy dreary outside...

St. Patrick's Week

Posted on March 22, 2009
Tried the Limmerick Ham sandwich lunch special at Majestic in honor of St. Patricks day. It was actually a notable ham sandwich, adding an egg spices everything up and dubliner cheese is really good stuff. Heard good things about the other specials that week...

Weekend

Posted on March 16, 2009
Hmm, what did I do this weekend. Normally I try to shy away from narrative time based posts. Seems more diary like and overly personal. However, I'm short of ideas and I feel I should give Le Chardonay 1 more review before castigating them. Starting with Monday went to Silly Goose for their Depression era pricing happy hourw which also offers depression era cool drinks like manhattans and sidecars all for a dollar...

Hopping Napa

Posted on March 06, 2009
Dad was in town Tuesday night, so I took advantage of the opportunity to try out that place you never goto in the back of the Sanderlin center Napa Cafe. The place was very very busy which surprised me given the state of the economy and no one else appeared to have a restaurant...

The Dow is Crashing

Posted on February 23, 2009
I'm wondering what that means to Memphis. How much of the recent revitalization of downtown is due to the easy credit markets or the new construction out east? The counterpoint is that prices in Memphis really never got super inflated, except perhaps downtown to a certain extent...

More Bar Food

Posted on February 12, 2009
Went to the cove. A neat bar with a nautical theme in a shady neighborhood for mpact memphis happy hour. Had the artichoke bacon goat cheese pizza which was very good which a thin crunchy yet still tender crust. Finished with oysters which everyone was getting that honestly were a bit off...

Good Golly Ms. Polly

Posted on February 01, 2009
Good Golly Mrs. Polly Stumbled into the restaurant behind one of the smoked turkey leg storefronts on Beale. Was surprised though it was just a turkey leg front. Turned out to be a soul food fried chicken and Waffle place called Mrs. Pollys...

Random Musings

Posted on January 22, 2009
Listened today on the radio briefly to commentary on how liberals were comparing Obama to Jesus Christ and engaging in idol worship as they tried to wipe out Christianity. The only prayer I say to Obama is for bankruptcy based mortgage modification having taken out a half page ad in the yellowbook for next year...

Choo Choo

Posted on January 13, 2009
Reviewed the Tennessean on the Downtown Square in Collierville with a Highly Blond Associate (HBA). After circling the square several times trying to figure out where to enter the rail cars, I started with the seared Foie Gras Appetizer which was really good, perfectly seared and retaining a consistent duckiness without being overpowering...

Lavoro?s

Posted on January 08, 2009
Lavoro?s Found a shockingly good cheap Italian place off Sycamore view at Summer www.lavorosmemphis.com . First time I was about to head for coffee and needed some food so I went into a fast foody type building looking to be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised which some great handbreaded cheesticks with a light breadcrumb breading that were delicious and possibly the best in Memphis...

Wow- Dow

Posted on November 20, 2008
It looks like the Dow has set an under 8000 mark that's not a spike temporary low. I'm impressed, I honestly didn't think the economy was that bad or it could get that low on more than a panic basis.I've decided to start doing bankruptcies on an unrelated note.

Apparently critical reviews of Calhoun's are faux pas with LI'sVIA TEXT-LI- Did you just diss on calhoun's school house pizza? !!!:(DS - Yeah, I did you want to do something about it punk ?LI - Bring it... I love that pizza with $1.50 PBR, its so old school that its freshDS- HA, You got meLI - And Spindini is fabulous, the pricing is appropriate for quality of food, portion size, and overall dining experience...

Credit

Posted on October 23, 2008
I have to give Spindini credit. I find the food solid but not the haute cuisine indicated by the pricing. I had the Elfo's special which consisted of a lightly sauced shrimp pasta dish for $24.00. The place still is always busy with a great atmosphere...

Texas State Fair

Posted on October 23, 2008
Texas State Fair Recently attended the Texas State Fair off the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Dubious after an experience at the midsouth fair where I found funnel cakes PRE COOKED and stacked ready to go to taste bud deprived patrons, I was expecting the TX state fair to be slightly better but still not within the realms of gastronomic enlightenment...

The Ultimate Tort Reform!

Posted on August 19, 2008
Frequently I hear complaints about how litigation cost is killing us. I think the solution lies in a simple step. Abolish the tort of negligence. Negligence is failure to exercise the duty of care that a reasonable person owes another. The problem is that definition has been stretched to accomodate any random slip-up...

Deja Venice

Posted on July 14, 2008

On the Hill

Posted on July 09, 2008
Recently, tried Fino?s on the Hill at 1853 madison. Thinking it was an Italian restaurant that was never open for real business, I?ve never tried the place. Drove by and noticed it was open (mb just not good at turning sign on).Went in and found a busy Italian grocery in the style of Central Grocery in New Orleans...

Just Lunches

Posted on June 30, 2008
Auntie came to town and I decided to try Just Lunch a new place where the old Elfo's used to be. A classic southern tea time lunch place the society wannabe crowd seemed to love with classics prepared at stiff prices. I started with the red bell pepper bisque which was thick and very good...

Arty

Posted on June 10, 2008
Recently finished arting up my living room. The crowning touch were 2 paintings I commissioned from a local Art student Willie Nelson a up and comer who specializes in portraits but did these for me. Willie told me to come up with an interesting marketable artist bio for him which is that he worked himself up from the streets after gang banging in Birmingham with the Tredgar Ironworkers and now has found Christ and is working himself through art school working as a soda jerk...

Masonic Munchies

Posted on May 06, 2008
Recently having joined Bartlett 211. I thought I'd review the fine food at the lodge. The first meal was hot dogs with chili. I have to give credit where due. They were fine hot dogs cooked until charred on the outside. Then there was the feast of the Holy Diabetes which consisted of three varieties of cookies, a cake, ice cream, a vegetable tray and peanut brittle...

Where have all the semi-decent politicians gone?

Posted on May 01, 2008
Recently, Obama admitted Reverend Wright was somewhat fringe? This disturbed me as its way past time such a statement would have any meaning. Politicians have become completely focused grouped. I worked on the first Nikki Tinker campaign some when I first got to Memphis and I don't think a non-scripted word or opinion about a politician came out of her mouth...

It Really is Time For A Change

Posted on March 31, 2008
The recent brew ha involving the wacko reverend has convinced me that Obama is the way to go. His clean cut image and Kennedyesque jib had me convinced he lacked the cuthroatedness necessary to be an effective politician. I was wrong. Obama is clearly capable of doing what it takes to win if the situation requires...

Exiting Gracefully

Posted on March 23, 2008
I visited Memphis alot before I moved here. Compared to twenty years ago, I do feel there has been alot of improvement. However, comedic interest aside, its time for someone new and the last ten years have seen the minimal amount of improvement. So congrats to the Mayor for stepping down, it was a class act and maybe that Prince Mongo guy will come back and run...

Tapas and Waffles

Posted on March 06, 2008
Went to Dish with Aunt. Overall, not what I?d call a great tapas joint. There's one downtown next to Onyx that I have high hopes for soon to open. The Japanese ownership really shown through with a lot of asian influence. I?d recommend it for being a good place for drinks and appetizers, but I wouldn?t call it a tapas place...

Ed and Dave's Soul Train

Posted on February 25, 2008
Was conversing with Ed, my official black friend (I think I should give him a certificate along with my nemesis and law clerk, (some roles are still open) and he volunteered to do a collaborative post. Ed suggested soul food, though I was a bit taken aback Ed would be so cliche and given his urbane defense firm sophistication I doubted his qualifications to review soul food even if he is my official black friend...

Everyday Italian

Super Tuesday

Posted on January 28, 2008
Let's be straight. I dislike the idea of Hillary Clinton as president. She seems excessively thin, a bit dense, and lacks the confidence to say something without running it by her advisors. With super tuesday coming up, its a great exercise in self gratification for all Americans who feel like voting to think about who they're going to vote if they make it to the polls...

FInishing Up

Brunch at Tavern on the Green was memorable. Aunt brought her gay friends P and E who while not impressed with the place thought it was nice for P's birthday. Thanksgiving Ideas for Improvement

Posted on December 05, 2007
Headed home for Thanksgiving. Mother was out of town with dad visiting her mother who needed some assistance. Had cold Corky's turkey and a few string beans. The rest of the family had some storebought pie which I skipped as being insufficiently tempting for breaking the diet...

Housing Woes

Posted on November 27, 2007
Even here in Memphis, the national mortgage mess has shockwaves. I hear people complaing the FED caused the mess by leaving the rate too low after 9/11 or that it raised rates too high afterwards.I think the FED is a non-story in this. Interest rates were and are quite low...

Downtown Steakery

Posted on November 25, 2007

Daily Grind at the Daily Grill

Posted on October 28, 2007
Once upon a time, restaurants associated with hotel were strictly verboten. Prepackaged foods and an apparent lack of anyone actually tasting the food made them purveyors of at best tasteless overpriced grill. Recently, at the spiffy new Westin across from the Fedex Forum, the hotel restaurant called the Daily Grill has opened...

Its About The Money

Just so no one has any confusion. Circa This!

Posted on October 04, 2007

The appetizers were almost exclusively shellfish which conflicted with my law clerk who is still pretending to belong to some religious cult...

Willing Ham

Republican vs. Democrat

Posted on July 13, 2007
A dissappearing distinction to a Memphis lawyer. Once upon a time, there were two political parties with differing philosophies on governance within the United States. That has changed into two political parties with almost identical philosophies and radically different views on the functional make-up of reality...

Herenton for Mayor!

Posted on July 07, 2007
Memphis is a city with a soul founded on character. Mayor Herenton clearly has character, also he's not afraid to call people out. I'm really tempted to endorse Herman Morris. However, apparently he was involved with MLGW in some way and from his website took some sort of stand for integrity...
