A Place for Everything,

Posted on March 02, 2010
and after Sunday, everything is in it's place. In a classic case of doing the "too much" I was warned not to do by my doctor, I cleaned and reorganized ALL of our closets on Sunday. Did you know we have 9 closets? We do! And now they are beautiful. It all started because I spent Saturday morning going through Landon's old clothes to put into the new girly Ikea bins in the baby's room (we used the Trofast system instead of buying a real dresser for Landon's nursery in Chicago because we didn't have any money and I wanted to add as much color as possible to our white walled room, and we're continuing to use them because I found that bins were great for baby clothes- it's not like you can really fold a onesie, but we did have to spend $22 on new bins because the bright red, blue, and green ones were messing up my beautiful "you are my sunshine" color palette)...

Requiem

Posted on February 27, 2010
I've been struggling all week with Grant's death. It was such a blow on Saturday- so shocking and sudden that I found myself wanting to argue with the friend who gave me the news. "But I just talked to him on Thursday!" I wanted to yell, how can you possibly be telling me he's dead? I kept asking if we were sure, like maybe we'd get the news that it was all a misunderstanding- a flurry of texts and emails gone wrong...

27

Posted on February 26, 2010
I turned 27 today. To commemorate the occasion I took another dreaded belly picture to satisfy the demands of my more far-flung friends and relatives. Here I am, looking a little worn at the end of a 10 hour day, but standing tall in my new Nine West chocolate-with-a-hint-of-gold snake-skin-textured 3 1/2" heels...

It's Kind of a Big Deal

Posted on February 25, 2010
It snowed yesterday. Here, in Austin, Texas, where it was 77 degrees on Sunday. In 48 hours I went from enjoying the fresh air with every window in my house open, to wearing a long down coat and drinking hot chocolate. And today? Today it was in the upper-50's and beautiful...

Battle Spaghetti Squash

Posted on February 22, 2010
I didn't make any formal Resolutions this year, but I did make a few informal ones ("informal" as in not written down- if it's not written, I can't break it), and one of those is a commitment to healthier, fresher eating.I think we eat fairly well. Not gold-star level, but maybe worthy of a slightly torn silver one...

Gone

Posted on February 20, 2010
I'm nearly 27 years old and have been blessed to be virtually untouched by death. All four of my grandparents and the rest of my immediate family members are alive and well. My parents are young and healthy. Two people from my high school class have passed away, both from cancer, and both tragic, but it was a class of 1,000 people and I didn't know either very well...

Things I Love

Posted on February 18, 2010
I started writing this list in my head over the weekend, with a plan to post it on Valentine's Day. But then my car's power steering stopped working on Sunday sometime between arriving at Landon's favorite park and trying to leave Landon's favorite park when mommy was hungry and wanted a Freebirds burrito...

Family Library

Posted on February 16, 2010
Books are my great passion- the one non-work and family related hobby I refuse to give up, and my love for reading is the trait that I most hope my children will inherit from me. Since my big case settled I've been a little more immersed in books than usual...

This Time Around

Posted on February 10, 2010
I dislike belly pictures. Not because I dislike my belly (though I can't say we're close friends, it's more of a relationship built on tolerance), but because I hate posing for them. It feels so awkward- I don't know what to do with my head, my facial expression, my hands- really anything that isn't my belly...

Like Fistfuls of Mental Manure

Posted on February 09, 2010
I love this article. It's wry, depressingly true in many respects, and delightfully quotable. Every time I read it I giggle and then shake my head a little and click out of the window before I start contemplating the deeper meaning of our potential label as a nation and/or generation of whiners...

The Broken Blackberry That Wasn't

Posted on February 08, 2010
Our weekend was lovely, but odd- at least for me. I couldn't get rid of this nagging feeling that there was something I was supposed to be doing but I couldn't think of what it might be. My blackberry was silent, which I enjoyed on Friday and Saturday, but by Sunday I was hitting buttons and sending test emails to make sure it was still working...

Filling Time

Posted on February 06, 2010
So what do you do when your biggest case and the main focus of your 12-month career as a litigator just disappears in a puff of smoke? Apparently, you take the day off and go to the zoo!Yesterday morning I popped into one of my favorite partner's offices...

My Career-Changer

Posted on February 04, 2010
My biggest case just disappeared from my docket. It's settled and gone like a puff of smoke. It's a very odd feeling. I'm actually quite sad. It's great for our client and I'm glad for them, but I loved this case. This case is the reason I am happy as a lawyer...

Shopping, continued, with shoes

Posted on February 02, 2010
Thanks for the comments and recommendations! In light of your wise counsel, and reviews from online retailers, I have decided to fall out of love with the beautiful bassinet and make the stroller my "pricey" item. As many of you pointed out, we'll use it longer and I think if anything is going to be high quality, it should be the piece of gear that will be pushed and maneuvered, rather than the one that just sits in our room...

Baby Shopping 2.0

Posted on January 31, 2010
I got my very first bonus check on Friday. It was fairly small, but still very exciting and unexpected. The old automatic bonuses for first and second years were taken away when the economy crashed- our base salary never changed or froze, but the bonuses are now at the firm's discretion...

My Firstborn

Posted on January 28, 2010
Landon and I went on a date to CiCi's pizza last night. We had so much fun "cheering" our pizza slices (ever since the family reunion/birthday party at my parent's house he always wants to say cheers and clink glasses at dinner) and talking about his day - actually conversing - that I had a moment where I nearly got choked up thinking about this kid before me...

Frozen Moments

Posted on January 27, 2010
There are so many little moments with Landon that I try to freeze in my mind forever. He's such a marvelous mix of sweetness and curiousity that JP and I can spend hours repeating the things he's said and done to each other and laughing. I think this is why we yell at each other less about politics- we're too busy recounting the way Landon tucked his puppy and shark and car and golf ball and plastic horse and big dump truck into bed with him...

Appointments and Reflections

Posted on January 26, 2010
I had another perinatal appointment this morning. All is well - my NP was very pleased with the ultrasound results my OB sent over last week (the two offices work well together, it's nice) and congratulated me on my baby girl. I described baby #2's nursery to her as I got my shot (thanks to etsy...

Nameless

Posted on January 22, 2010
As I've previously mentioned, our baby girl has no name. We still have 20 weeks to figure this out (or 15, if she's like Landon), but now that she's a she, and seems so much more real because of that knowledge, I don't like that she is nameless. Our hypothetical second baby boy was named...

My Baby Girl

Posted on January 21, 2010
It took me approximately 2 hours to adjust to the idea of having a girl. And that's really what it was- an adjustment. It's not that I was unhappy with the idea, I just had this picture in my head for the past 4 months (or really, 4 years) of two little boys running around my house and I had to shake it out...

It's a...

Posted on January 20, 2010
GIRL!I realized right when the ultrasound tech made her announcement that I was more attached idea of a baby boy than I thought (I think mostly because I already had the name picked out and I'm really sad not to use it) and I think JP is still in a daze...

High Risk

Posted on January 19, 2010
I was going to write a nice post about my date with JP last night, and how in the middle of dinner I suddenly felt a surge of pride that we've been together for 8 1/2 years and have found a way to thrive after some very difficult times. Here we are at 26 and 28, homeowners, financially secure, nearly through two separate rounds of graduate school which we're paying for ourselves, and the proud parents of one very happy little boy...

to PapaGigi's house we go

Posted on January 18, 2010
On Saturday morning I re-packed my suitcase for the fourth time in two weeks and piled the family in the car to head to Houston. Many months ago my uncle the pilot (and only family member not residing in Texas) decided to bring his family to visit the Texans over the MLK weekend...

Massage Therapy Rx

Posted on January 15, 2010
I got back to Austin on Wednesday in enough time to sit down for dinner with my boys and snuggle with Landon in his big boy bed (a transition which could NOT have been easier- we just stuck him in there about a week ago and he's taken all his naps and 12 hours at night ever since- I still have such residual fear from his "not-easy" days that I totally dreaded this switch to a new room and new bed)...

Keeping the Spousal Spark Alive When You're Working Non-Stop

Posted on January 13, 2010
I am still in Fort Worth and totally over the thrill of business travel. As a girl who grew up camping, hotel rooms held a certain allure well into my early twenties. But I'm done now. I want my own room, my own bed, and my own big, snoring husband next to me...

Recharging

Posted on January 09, 2010
After an insane, amazing, exhausting week at trial in which I billed nearly 90 hours, our Austin-based legal team pulled back up to the office at 7:05 last night. I walked in our front door at 7:13 and Landon greeted me by sprinting around the corner yelling, "MommyMommyMommeeeeeeeee!" and leaping into my arms...

Full Throttle

Posted on January 05, 2010
I have billed 60 hours so far this year. This year that just began 5 days ago.The opposing party in my biggest case (the case that I am very attached to that caused me to switch from corporate law to litigation) filed a motion for a temporary injunction late in the afternoon on the 31st, and I have worked nearly non-stop since then...

When Balance is a Verb

Posted on January 02, 2010
I woke up yesterday at 7 a.m. to fifteen new emails regarding my biggest case and an emergency Temporary Injunction hearing scheduled (by the other side) for Tuesday morning. I have worked almost non-stop since then, though I did take a park/hamburger break yesterday evening to watch Landon run about Zilker park and then refuse to eat a hamburger...

The 0's

Posted on December 31, 2009
I just realized (while sitting at my desk at work, nearly alone on my floor and trying to decide whether I'd rather push through and finish this motion or go home now and work a few hours from there tomorrow) that when this decade began I was 16.16.I was a baby...

Peacocks and Playing Hooky

Posted on December 29, 2009
I'm having a hard time believing that Christmas is over and today is a work day. I took off yesterday and was continually perplexed by all the emails buzzing on my blackberry- I kept forgetting it was a Monday and there were people in my office actually working on legal things...
