Blawg of the Day -- BioCommercialization Blog

Posted on February 20, 2008
You might not think today's blog, the The BioCommercialization Blog, is law-related. And it's not, really, but it is written by a lawyer. Kevin Buckley is both an attorney and a biochemist, and has more than a decade of experience in patent law and transactional matters. The blog's goal is to enhance "the potential for successful biotechnology commercialization." Kevin has only one post so far, so it may not have achieved critical mass yet -- hopefully he'll be back with more soon.

Creating chat rooms on the fly

Posted on February 18, 2008
As readers of this blog may know, Dennis Kennedy and I have written a book on collaboration technologies for lawyers -- The Lawyer's Guide to Collaboration Tools and Technologies: Smart Ways to Work Together will discuss not only collaboration strategies but also the tools that will help you work with others. We'll also be creating an online companion for our book, with a constantly-updated directory of the collaboration technologies we find. Today I'll mention one of those sites. ChatMaker makes it dead simple to hold a chat with anyone, instantly. Just create a name for the chat room, then send the URL for that room to your participants, and voila! You're chatting with others. A great, free way to instantly communicate with others, without everyone having to download an instant messaging software program.

Blawg of the Day -- Spatial Law

Reprints of Public Domain Works

Posted on February 13, 2008
Now this is seriously cool. Let's say you're looking for a book, but it's out of print. Head over to Google Books and do a search for a book. Once you find one you want, copy the URL and take it to PublicDomainReprints.org (if you don't want to use Google Books, there's a search feature here where you can search over 1.7 million titles). Paste the URL into the Reprint Request box, enter your email address, and in a while you'll get a message that your book is available to purchase at Lulu. I did a search for books containing my family name, and came up with a book of cases argues in the Great Britain Court of Chancery, published in 1820. I requested a reprint, and a few days ago was told that the book was now available in paperback for $14...

ABA TECHSHOW Goes Social

Posted on February 12, 2008
The Internet continues to roll out some fun tools that are great at keeping people connected and talking about a conference, whether they're attending the conference or not. At ABA TECHSHOW 2008 we plan on making use of some of these tools, and we're really excited about the possibilities. Here are some of the things we're working on for the show: -- A blog feed that will aggregate all of the live-blogging at ABA TECHSHOW, as well as any other blog posts regarding the show. -- A Twitter feed will update conference attendees about upcoming sessions, events, and other fun stuff, via text message or on the Web. -- Got a camera? Bring it to ABA TECHSHOW, 'cause we're working on a Flickr feed that will show all the photos taken at the conference all in one place...

Blawg of the Day -- Law21

Posted on February 12, 2008
Today I'm beginning a periodic look at blogs north of the border -- I'm catching up on all of the great Canadian blogs, and specifically those mentioned in Steve Matthews' Canadian Law Blogs List. First up is Law21, the blog of Jordan Furlong. He's currently the Editor-In-Chief of National magazine at the Canadian Bar Association. His introduction to the blog says it better than I can: "In the 21st century, the practice of law is shaking loose from its traditional moorings and heading out into uncharted territory. Opportunities abound, but so do pitfalls. Most of the old rules won?t apply anymore, while some will matter more than ever. Welcome to the new legal profession, powered by collaboration, innovation, and client service. This is your front-row seat...

This blog presents his "take on practice and document management, and other legal technology."

Keeping Tabs on Firefox

Posted on February 04, 2008
One of the best features about Firefox (and IE7, as well) is the ability to open up different sites in multiple tabs in the same window. Sometimes I find that my mouse finger gets a little itchy, and I wind up closing a tab I still wanted to keep open. Have you ever had that happen to you? Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to get back the tab that most recently closed. First, just press CTRL+SHIFT+T, and voila! The tab is back. To close the tab again, just press CTRL+W, and it's gone. Another way to open multiple closed tabs is to click on the History menu, and then select Recently Closed Tabs. You'll get a menu of the tabs you closed in the recent past. Thanks to Download Squad for this great tip.

Why You Should Attend ABA TECHSHOW -- The Keynote

Posted on January 30, 2008
I'm not quite done telling you the reasons why you should attend ABA TECHSHOW -- there are a lot of them! Today, my reason is short -- but very powerful. We are thrilled and extremely proud to announce that Marc Rotenberg, Executive Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, will Keynote ABA TECHSHOW 2008. EPIC is an organization devoted to focusing public attention on emerging civil liberties and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values...

Blawg of the Day -- Best Practices for Legal Education

Posted on January 30, 2008
This is a great idea for a blog -- Best Practices for Legal Education is sponsored by Albany Law School, and edited by Professor Mary Lynch. As for the blog's purpose, I'll let it speak for itself: "This site was created with two goals in mind: 1) to create a useful web-based source of information on current reforms in legal education arising from the publication of Roy Stuckey?s Best Practices for Legal Education and the Carnegie Foundation?s Educating Lawyers; and 2) to create a place where those interested in the future of legal education can freely exchange ideas, concerns, and opinions. This has the potential to be a great resource for legal educators and all other interested in legal education.

As we get closer to the Early Bird deadline for ABA TECHSHOW, I'm counting some of the reasons to attend this terrific legal technology conference. Today, we'll talk about new and fun stuff. Just because you're attending an educational technology conference doesn't mean you can't also have a little fun, and get to make some new friends in the process. Here are just a few of the new and fun things you'll find at ABA TECHSHOW 2008: -- First, the venue. Why You Should Attend ABA TECHSHOW 2008 -- Part 3

Posted on January 22, 2008
In the first two entries in this series, I talked about the great content to be found at ABA TECHSHOW, and the fantastic speakers who will be providing that content. Today I want to mention another reason to come to ABA TECHSHOW: the Exhibitors. This year we'll have more than 100 legal technology companies represented in our Expo Hall, in just about every category imaginable. To me, this is one of the best things about attending legal technology shows like ABA TECHSHOW -- the ability to see, all in one place, most of the major vendors in this space. Let's say you're searching for a case management or document management system -- where else can you find representatives from the major providers all in the same place, ready to demonstrate their products for you? This makes it easy for you to compare and contrast products, and give you the hands-on information you need to make your technology buying decision...

Have you ever received a PDF file that needed editing, but didn't have access to Acrobat or any of those programs that can edit PDFs? No matter -- you can now edit PDFs online, for free, with PDFHammer.com. The offerings are a bit limited for now -- all you can do is delete pages, reorder pages, or append PDF files to each other. But the service is free, and it's definitely helpful if you happen to find yourself without one of the standard PDF-editing programs.
