Public Lending Right in the new Digital Economy Bill

Posted on November 20, 2009
The Government has published the Digital Economy Bill. It contains lots of interesting things, which I may come back to in further pots, but I thought that as a Librarian (it is easy to forget reading this blog), I should bring people’s attention to Section 44 - Public lending right (1) Section 5(2) of the Public Lending [...

Thanks to James Mullan and Headshift for bringing my attention to this must read post of Capgemini’s ‘Capping IT Off’ blog entitled ‘4 Myths about blocking Internet access in the enterprise’ The post echoes comments I made in my post from last week ‘Why ?wasted time? is wasted column inches’ about just why blocking access to [...

Is Twitter the rss reader of the future?

Posted on October 30, 2009
Web Worker Daily is asking a question that a number of people have asked during 2009, and that is ? Is Twitter replacing the rss reader? Interestingly another blogger Jeff Tucker did a post yesterday entitled RSS Isn?t Dead, So Better Organize Your Feed Reader I think the answer to WWD’s question probably depends [...

Why ?wasted time? is wasted column inches

Posted on October 29, 2009
I see this week it was that time of year when surveys or reports come out detailing how much the UK economy is effected by ‘wasted time’ in the workplace. Of course, there is always a scapegoat for this and the headline in the Daily Telegraph ‘Twitter ‘costs British economy £1...

3 Strikes on the way ? and not a postie in sight

Just as it was announced that the conciliation procedure was set to start between member states and the European Parliament (EP) over [...

KM - There is no timeline

Amber Corrin has written a very interesting story on Federal Computer Week entitled ‘DOD finds knowledge management a tricky fit’. What made me laugh was how easy it was to replace mentions of the Defense Department with lawyers in statements like: “As much as Defense Department officials like the idea of knowledge management, they [...

Shrinkwrap licence doesn?t prevent resale of software a person ?owns?

Posted on October 02, 2009
Interesting case out of the US District Court (Washington) this week, looking at the issue of whether an individual can re-sell software on sites such as ebay under the US’s first sale doctrine. The Court said yes, and the existence of the shrinkwrap ‘licence’ does not prevent you from doing so...

Ofcom takes 6 years to do something it should have done in 6 weeks

A mixed week for ITV this week. Govt looks at whether to ditch defamation ?multiple publication? rule

The UK government is consulting on whether there needs to be changes in the UK’s civil law on defamation in particular in relation to the ‘multiple publication’ rule, established in 1849 in the Duke of Brunswick v Harmer. Currently each publication of defamatory material gives rise to a separate cause of action which is subject to [...

Video Law ? not law after all

Posted on August 28, 2009
One of the more interesting and embarrassing things to come out of the UK government’s programme to implement aspects of its Digital Britain report, came to light this week when the government had to admit that the Video Recordings Act (VRA) 1984, which set down that videos and video games must be classified and age [...

Good morning Mr Librarian - Can you recommend a legal database?

All the talk in the legal information world over the past couple of days has been around an unfortunate marketing email from West (Westlaw to us in the UK) advertising the usefulness of desktop access to their legal research products. The email asked the question: “ARE YOU ON A FIRST NAME BASIS WITH THE LIBRARIAN?” I guess [...

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) has re-launched its website. Norwegian government departments with rss feeds [ALL of them!]

Posted on December 11, 2008
It had to happen one day, and today is that day. My (pointless?) quest to create lists of rss feeds offered by government departments around the world (or Europe, at least) has at last found a winner. Take a bow Norway, who offer feed for EVERY single government department...

Andy & Charlie show tells music industry what they want to hear

Posted on December 11, 2008
Andy Burnham seems to have been finally hooked by the Music Industry and now wants to support calls for extending the term of protection for recorded performances from 50 years. At the moment he is still stopping short of the EU’s proposal to extend it to 95 years, instead calling for “An extension to match [...

Joseph Chitty releases his latest update of his legal book all about contracts. This is the 30th edition of the book, which he first published in 1826. I believe Mr Chitty is a vampire, which explains why he is still writing updates to his book 182 years after he published the first edition...

Lawfirm doesn?t understand internet

The Clothes on Their Backs

Posted on November 12, 2008
Look - another Booker review, if much belated.. Linda Grant’s The Clothes on Their Backs, is a portrait of a post-war migrant family to London, struggling to find an emotional foothold in this new country. It is also a coming-of-age tale, recounting Vivian’s (the main character and narrator) young adulthood, as she comes [...

US Election

Posted on November 03, 2008
It is now only a day until the US Election. In just over 24 hours time we will hopefully know whether from January 2009, we will have four years of President McCain or President Obama. If the polls are to be believed it is already a done deal, and it will be the latter, but [...
