: Threat LevelMcCain Wins GOP Nomination, Huckabee Finally Concedes
By Ryan Singel, Kevin Poulsen, Sarah Lai Stirland, Kim Zetter, and David Kravets
Senator John McCain won the Republican party's nomination for president this evening as he swept to victory in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee finally conceded the race, meaning that there won't be any more stories about a potential leader of the free world not "believing" in evolution.
"Is God finish (sic) with this election process? Are we quitting before He says we are to finish. I believe we are here for a reason and it has not been revealed until. Remember God's time and man time are completely different," wrote one supporter who was apparently incoherent with grief in response to the news on the Huckabee campaign's blog. "God Bless Gov. Huckabee and His Family, Staff Workers,Bloggers, Video makers, Rangers, Donators,Prayer Warriors, Christians, Non Christians, Soldiers fighting for our country and to those I left out. It was an honor to read all of your inspiring comments."
Huckabee's concession came after a strange incident this afternoon when someone sent out an apparent hoax e-mail purportedly from Huckabee campaign manager Ed Rollins.
The note said that Huckabee would be offering a concession speech in the evening, which, the Newsweek reporter Matthew Philips notes, would have been quite a shock to the traveling press since Huckabee's advisers kept saying that he wasn't going to quit. Rollins apparently told the reporter that "it's completely fictional."
The Newsweek reporter notes that the e-mail came from an address that was "similar
to one that Rollins uses," but says that there were a few tell-tale
signs from the writing itself that showed the spoofer up. Back
to the subject at hand ... from a science and technology policy
perspective, McCain's pretty well versed (see story below.)
And despite the New York Times' recent story about McCain's relationship telecom lobbyist Vicki Iseman, he's seen by the wonks inside the Beltway, including consumer advocates, as a friend to the little guy.
McCain hasn't had that much of a presence online, apart from his targeted AdWords campaign on Google.
The best thing about his online campaign so far (and it's not even officially part of his campaign) is his daughter Meghan McCain's regularly updated campaign trail musical playlists.
