John Edwards (UNC Law ?77) Plans to Quit 2008 Race

By Ashby Jones

ADVERTISEMENTS

edwardsx And then there were four … candidates with law degrees still viable (viable?) in the 2008 presidential race. John Edwards, the erstwhile trial lawyer who made a fortune handling medical-malpractice and other cases on behalf of plaintiffs, is set to announce that he will end his candidacy today. Here’s the story from the WSJ.

Edwards had said earlier this week he would campaign through the big national primary next Tuesday. But he had yet to win any state contests, and has largely finished a distant third behind his better-known, better-financed rivals, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. An announcement is slated for later today in New Orleans.

In last week’s post on Fred Thompson’s campaign dropout, we posted a few “bye-kus,” the poetic form created by James Taranto, the WSJ editorial board member who writes the wildly popular Best of the Web column. Taranto writes one each time a candidate drops out.

First there was the joint bye-ku for Chris Dodd (Lousville Law) and Joe Biden (Syracuse Law):

Yes, they’ve really spent
68 years in Congress
It just seems longer

And then the one written for Tommy Thompson (Wisconsin Law)

“I’m too sexy for
This poll,” said Tommy? Oh, right
Said Fred, not Tommy

Finally, Fred Thompson’s bye-ku:

They called him “tortoise”
But now the man with no hair
Has got out of ours

Feeling inspired to write one about Edwards, Law Blog readers? Please do, and we’ll make sure to post Taranto’s when we get it.
