How detrimental to your credit is an unpaid charge

I was being messed around with charges from Verizon Wireless. I switched carriers and did not pay the final charge out of disgust and anger at how they treat their clients.
Was this the right course of action? On my credit report it is the only negative issue of record. I am not financially able to settle with them currently and it has gone to two collections agencies who have notified me.
Is there a way I can dispute this and not pay what I consider is not owed?
