This is a question to lawyers in all 50 states concerning the right to have a lawyer in criminal and civil cases.


It is my understanding that the 6th Amendment requires, that if you can't afford a lawyer in a criminal case, the Court must provide a lawyer in your defense at no charge to you. However, in a civil case no such protection exists.

If you have to defend yourself in a civil case that has been filed against you, you must find a lawyer and pay that lawyer out of your pocket if you can afford it. If you can't afford a lawyer, you have to depend on Legal Aid to help you, or defend yourself in Court. Is this correct in all 50 states.
