: Legal Pad | LAFearing backlash, judges go public
By Jason Siegel
The rise of nasty political campaigns targeting elected state judges
nationally, coupled with the cost of judicial elections and a potential
backlash over the gay marriage decision, has prompted a California'
judicial commission to hold the first public forum on preserving
impartial courts.
The Commission for Impartial Courts, set up by Chief Justice Ron George in September, set out to head off rancorous judicial election contests by launching a public discussion on the role of judges in a forum on "Preserving Impartial Courts in California."
WATCH: The full, 3-hour public forum
The forum included: California Associate Justice Ming Chin, Ohio Chief Justice Thomas Moyer, former California governors Gray Davis and Pete Wilson, KTLA news reporter Manuel Medrano, Loyola Law School professor Laurie L. Levenson, state Senate President pro Tempore Don Perata, State Bar of California president Jeffrey Bleich, League of Women Voters president Mary G. Wilson, California Judges Association president Ira Kaufman and Stanford University law professor Kathleen Sullivan.
