Free Federal Court Filing Repository

By Paul M. Bush

ADVERTISEMENTS
I stumbled upon this interesting site, pacer.resource.org, which is run by public.resource.org, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit.  The premise is that as federal court filings are purchased from PACER by the public, they can then be "recycled" by everyone on the web, by uploading them into a free shared database.  While I myself (and I'm sure others) have had this idea before, the main question is obviously participation.  This database of shared previously purchased filings will only be as good as the number of documents that are uploaded.  It will be interesting to see if this site becomes a valuable source for federal court filings, or just fades away like many other well intentioned ideas on the web.  How comfortable will law firms and other professionals be with its employees uploading documents that they paid for to a free site?  How many people will take the time and make the effort to contribute?  Time will tell.
