: Magic CookieThirty, part 2
"I didn't think it would be a big deal," I said. "I thought having a kid would be the big milestone in my life. But my birthday has actually made me reflect about where I am in my life and where I want to be." She agreed that she had been doing the same thing.
Another friend, over the course of a few months, asked me a series of questions that started with, "What's it like to be married and have a kid?" and eventually ended up as, "Why should I want to be married and have a kid? Is it really worth it?" Toward the end of this string of conversations in which I attempted to explain why I love my son, I deduced that he was also turning thirty this year and was trying to figure out love, life, the universe, and everything before he got there.
So, where I am: Life is good. These may just be the best years of my life, although I hope it's not all downhill from here. Family, home (aside from the huge spider I found in the basement earlier), school: all great. I am excited about starting a new career and feel like I have all sorts of possibilities ahead. K has brought incredible joy into my life and, of course, JW is my rock.
Where I would like to be in the next 10 years: Established in a career, with a sibling for K and enough time and energy to be fully present for my family.
From an email I wrote to a friend, this about sums it up:
People keep asking me if it feels different to be thirty and you know, I think it does a little, even though they're joking. Like my twenties were supposed to be carefree and I was supposed to be going out and getting drunk and in general making poor life choices, and in my thirties I'm supposed to settle down and be responsible, but I settled down a while ago and now I feel like I am finally at the correct stage of my life.
