Shadowing a Public Defender

By NoReinsGirl

ADVERTISEMENTS
Day off and I hauled out of bed at Oh-Dark-Thirty to shadow a public defender. It was, by far, a huge success and learning experience for me. Shadowing someone who works in Crim Def provides such an eye opening view of how the law actually works and how it doesn't work is pretty impressive to this green 1L.

Learning about arraignments, pleadings, and prelims by sitting in on them provides a hands on/eyes on experience possible. My ADD self was absolutely rewarded by the pace, the banter of attorneys in the peanut gallery, sitting in the "reserved" (for attorneys) section, meeting a judge, and being asked my newbie opinion on something.

This is one helluva frat/sorority to join, peeps. Love it.

I think what meant the most to me was my PD and I cruised to a Taquiera and in comes six other PD's who came to join because of me. It was, and is, and incredible gesture on their part. Something that I will carry into the long days and nights of why I study so dilligently and aggressively for a law degree. I saw the end result of the hard work today...its is a damn good view. Of course, it goes without saying that I've nicknamed two of the PD's "Laurel and Hardy" for their friendship and banter with each other. OMG...hysterically funny peeps. I was howling at lunch over some of the stories. Even down to the mock arraignment they did for each other.

Yeah, think I may be closing in on my nitch (that just reads so very wrong...looks like something very dirty...LOL). Let's call it my oeuvre (nah, snotty/artsy) or even my path (that's better), shall we? Truly loved what a crim def attorney does and enjoyed the pace of the office.

With all that said, the legal profession has blown wide the doors of my future. I shall happily skip through them.

I. Love. The. Law.
