I started sending out a host of resumes and applications to jobs in New York City, testing out my new game plan. It's exciting, though I am nervous about the cost of living there. But, hey, two incomes, right? We'd probably live in Brooklyn or somewhere outside of Manhattan in any case. Interestingly, I've spent plenty of time in other East Coast cities, but never New York.

Right before Brown graduation, I applied to a publishing house in Manhattan, thinking I might move there eventually and get a career in writing started. I took the bus from Providence into the city, and started hyperventilating. The thought of being alone in this huge city was so daunting to me; I think Bostonians are always taught to think of New York as huge, dirty, and obnoxious, which certainly didn't help. I was offered the job: at a salary of $26,500. So that pretty much sealed it. I was not going to New York.

But now, who knows? I won't be alone, which certainly calms my nerves quite a bit.

NB: I don't mind the Mets, but the Yankees are scum and will always be so.
