Definitions of terms used by managers of law departments ? Part V

By Rees Morrison

ADVERTISEMENTS

Four times I have attempted to pull together the definitions on this blog of terms that are important for general counsel (See my post of May 3, 2006: 32 definitions; Aug. 26, 2006: ten definitions; and Nov. 26, 2006: 13 more definitions.).

My most recent effort was late in 2007 (See my post of Dec. 5, 2007: nine more definitions.).

Still the legions of defined terms march on, including in their storied ranks an additional 26:

Alignment (See my post of March 31, 2007: alignment; and June 15, 2008: alignment with references cited.).

Benefits (See my post of July 26, 2008: benefits with references cited.).

Reporting (See my post of Jan. 12, 2009: reporting with references cited.).

Communities of practice (See my post of March 13, 2007: communities of practice.).

Community service (See my post of Dec. 16, 2008: community service defined with references cited.).

Core competencies (See my post of May 23, 2008: core competencies with 12 references.).

Creativity (See my post of Feb. 16, 2007: creativity.).

Culture (See my post of Dec. 17, 2007: culture.).

Declarative and procedural knowledge (See my post of Feb. 21, 2007: two forms of knowledge.).

Legal risk (See my post of Jan. 3, 2008: legal risk.).

Matter (See my post of March 26, 2008: matter.).

Practices (See my post of Nov. 19, 2008: practices *5.).

Priorities (See my post of Nov. 19, 2008: priorities *2.).

Programs (See my post of Nov. 19, 2008: programs *3.).

Projects (See my post of Nov. 19, 2008: projects *4.).

Pro bono (See my post of Aug. 26, 2008: pro bono with references cited.).

Reporting (See my post of Jan. 12, 2009: reporting with references cited.).

Routine, standardized and commodity work (See my post of June 6, 2008: three types of common work.).

Single points of contact, specialists, majors and minors (See my post of Dec. 9, 2008: *3 three foci of lawyers in-house.).

Small law department (See my post of Dec. 27, 2008: small departments with 7 references cited.).

Tacit knowledge (See my post of Jan. 6, 2009: tacit knowledge.).

Tools (See my post of April 17, 2007: tools.).

My other ruminations on vocabulary include an eclectic few (See my post of June 13, 2006: words compared to concepts; Dec. 9, 2005: operational definitions; and Dec. 11, 2006: why vocabulary helps managers of law departments and 10 terms as yet undefined by this blog.).
