An asshole is not a person but a behavior, not one person but two . . .

Posted on November 01, 2010
I felt a great deal of kinship with the writers of the Rally to Restore Sanity today, particularly that part of John Stewart's speech about how we cooperate with one another in traffic regardless of our bumper stickers (oh no, that one says Obama ...

Speaking as Negotiation

Posted on October 29, 2010
I believe my first public speaking engagement was in the elementary school auditorium in December of1962, narrating the school Christmas pageant. When I spoke in public as a child (and later acted in La Mesa's "Little Theater" ~ a pre-teen farce called "Mudpack Madness") I did so with unmixed motives...

Let Deb Sofield Increase Your ROI on Your Speaking Engagements

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Annual Meeting of the Women Lawyers of South Carolina last week, a more dynamic and women's-issue focused group of women lawyers than you're likely to find anywhere in this country. I love speaking to women, particularly about negotiating their market value and shattering the glass ceiling one at a time and with one another's support...

The ABC's of Conflict Thanks the ADR Blogosphere and Mediate.com

Posted on October 24, 2010
(pictured:  the Queen of the ADR Blogosphere ~Diane Levin of the Mediation Channel and the World Directory of ADR Blogs)   I began to blog on ADR topics in 2006 when I stumbled over local mediator Jeff Krivis' blog (thanks Jeff!) I've often said that the blogosphere is a small Midwestern town where the residents feel safe enough to keep their doors unlocked at night and everyone has carte blanche to walk into the neighbors' kitchens, open their refrigerators and taste whatever gustatory pleasures await their curiosity...

That we accomplish anything whatsoever without the support of our friends and families and colleagues and even the random kind stranger is a particularly American delusion.  Whenever I read a book, which is often, I always read the acknowledgements because I want to know how someone accomplished the extraordinary thing I have wanted to accomplish all of my life ~ write and publish a book...

Gen Y Learns to Negotiate on the Streets of Naples

Wherein the book is judged by its cover . . .

Posted on October 13, 2010
Yes, the ABC's of Conflict Resolution is nearly a reality.   I'd be cool and calm about it as if it were no big deal to write a book, gee, everyone has one these days, don't they?  I mean, we live in Los Angeles and every week when we put our garbage out some mysterious stranger tucks pages of his screenplays in the handles of the plastic trash cans, blue, green and black, as if we lived in Spielberg's neighborhood...

Paintball Rifle for Line Cutters?

Posted on October 03, 2010
In the first chapter of A is for Asshole, the Grownups' ABCs of Conflict Resolution, we dissect and illuminate why an otherwise sober member of the Fourth Estate might resort to the purchase of a paintball rifle in response to the asshole who cuts into the long line of cars 'crawling toward the exit for the Brooklyn Bridge...

H is for Hero

Of course the McCourts will mediate

Posted on September 22, 2010
From today's Wall Street Journal Law Blog (an Angels fan):  every time we hear the name 'McCourt' these days, our heart leaps a little. Who cares if the ridiculous divorce travails of Jamie and Frank end up wrecking the team, after all? The worse the Dodgers fare, the more likely it is that fans will shift their allegiances to the superior team that plays 30 miles down I-5...

D is for Drama Queen ~> that guy in the office who's always stirring the pot

Posted on September 18, 2010
Here's another character everyone will recognize – the Drama Queen. Male or female, the Drama Queen stirs the pot of conflict to add emotional intensity and intrigue to an otherwise ordinary business day. Of the primary responses to conflict – denying, avoiding, yielding, problem solving and contending – Drama Queens almost always choose contention...

V is for Victim, Who Rarely Get to Have Their Say

Posted on September 17, 2010
(in the criminal justice system, victims rarely get to have their say) Every act of violence requires a victim, and every victim a perpetrator. Even if victim and offender are strangers, in the searing moment when a violent crime is committed they become inextricably bound in one of the most painful human relationships imaginable...

"O" is for Outlaw: Anyone YOU Know?

Posted on September 16, 2010
Nearly every condominium complex harbors an outlaw – the man, woman, couple or family – who refuses to follow the rules. It could be the young couple blasting the woofers off their stereo at 3 am, the elderly woman who doesn't clean up after her dog, or the raucous family playing Marco Polo in the community pool after midnight...

Who's Too Big to Fail? We Are!

Posted on September 15, 2010
Cross-posted at She Negotiates What does this man have that you don't? A year-end 2009 salary of $21,340,547 during one of the worst year's in the history of his industry ~ banking. Listen!  The recession is just another excuse for not paying you what you're worth...

"F" is for Friend: the Owners' Manual

Posted on September 15, 2010
My Twitter account tells me I have more than 2,000 'followers,' and my Facebook page suggests I add someone new to my account as a 'friend' nearly every day.  Despite our modern online age, people do not become friends (or loyal followers) at the push of a button...
