MIAMI MELTDOWN

Posted on November 12, 2010
Heat horror! The home town cagers in free fall as the Heat suffered a second straight loss at home last night. The team is now 1-3 in the last four games as they stagger towards the cellar and a losing record. Meanwhile our Fins make a change at QB as they try and avoid another embarrassing loss at home this weekend...

ADVERSE POSSESSION

Posted on November 09, 2010
Means never having to say you're sorry- as long as you do it openly, continuously, and notoriously. The NY Times reports here that Florida's adverse possession statute, circa 1869, is back in vogue as an enterprising realtor is using homeless families to help him take possession of abandoned homes...

COURT REPORTERS TO STRIKE??

Posted on November 04, 2010
Court reporters of Miami-Dade Unite!!! You have nothing to lose but the chains of your low per-page rates and your shameful treatment by the Florida Legislature! Many of you saw the Miami Herald, (reprinted on this reporting blog) article this past Sunday in which long time court reporter Vanester Collier refused to transcribe the trial of a defendant who was indigent because the Florida Legislature changed the per page rate for indigent defendants from $5...

ELECTION DAY 2010

Posted on November 02, 2010
Good Tuesday Morning! It's election day. Honor the men and women who have fought for your right to vote and tell that judge you will be back in a few hours because you're going to vote. We went 5-0 on our NFL picks, winning our final MNF IF bet. The totals later...

ELECTION NIGHT 11/1/2010

Posted on November 02, 2010
9:30 Update: Before Rick Scott and the Republicans begin celebrating a victory, we note that Miami-Dade and West Palm, both solid Democratic counties, have 0% reporting statewide races as per the Florida Elections website. Scott and her ticket are well within striking distance depending upon the turnout in those counties...

NFL WEEK 8 2010

Good Sunday Morning. After Monday Night's disaster, we're done with the Cowpokes and you can put a fork in them because they are done for the season. Rumpole is 13-12-1 for the season after losing the last part of our IF bet on MNF. Our winnings for the year as we approach the half way point to the season stand at 360 cupcakes...

THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:SO, YOU WANT

Posted on October 28, 2010
THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:SO, YOU WANT TO BE A CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE?????*Rump - one correction. Bloom also joins another recent colleague from the County bench, Judge Browyn Miller, who was the most recent Judge to move from County to Circuit. *Judge Friedman has tendered his resignation and 16 have submitted applications (5 of which are County Court Judges) to the JNC for consideration...

NEW FED WEBSITE

Posted on October 27, 2010
We're back. DOM broke the news on the new Fed web site for the Southern District. But leave it to those lovable feds- the site rotates through picture is of the various courthouses including the US Attorneys office. Is there some subliminal message about having to talk to the the AUSA before going to court? There's a fun survey you can take with the choice of getting an additional point off your PSI or some coupons for Amazon dot com...

JUDGE BETH BLOOM TO CIRCUIT

Posted on October 27, 2010
The Governor promoted county court judge Beth Bloom to circuit court today, and you have more than likely already heard the news as it spread throughout the building with the speed of a judge running for a free buffet dinner.Bloom joins her recent colleagues on the county bench, Judges Arzola and Fernandez as the latest judge to be promoted...

SHIP OF FOOLS

Posted on October 25, 2010
You wanted more Browierd, you got it. We can't do it justice here. Lets just say no one would hang the moniker "silent" on Broward's outspoken PD. He is standing up for his lawyers and their clients against the bullying if not bizarre conduct of Judge Seidman, who last time we checked, still lost the election and must vacate his chambers by midnight 12/31/2010...

NFL 2010 WEEK SEVEN

Posted on October 24, 2010
Suicide pool: Miguel De La Over and Plea D have taken the Ravens and then nevermore;Rick Freedman and BTDT march with the Saints. We're at the Starbucks here in Truckee, on the Donner pass (stop by and see us, the latte is on us!) , and internet is spotty up here at best...

WRAP UP

Posted on October 23, 2010
GOOD SATURDAY MORNING. Lets wrap up the current *contretemps about silent chucky:There was a time not too long ago when the Dade Public Defenders Office was a wonderful place to work. The lawyers provided superior legal representation and loved their job...

SAME OLD SONG BUT WITH A DIFFERENT BEAT....

Posted on October 20, 2010
We'll post a last word about the PDs office later in the week. Lets see....the SAO passed on prosecuting the AUSA Sean Cronin for hopping into a local bar's pool in his skivies. No surprise there. Tomorrow (Thursday) is the Bench-n-Bar mixer at "Delores but you can call me Chief Judge Brown" next to Brickell Village...

A HOUSE DIVIDED

Posted on October 18, 2010
First the important stuff: No one went out in the suicide pool, so five remain. We went 1-1-1 in our picks and were +170 for the day. We are 10-11-1 for the season and plus sixty Rex Ryans (thank you Jets) for the year. In our head to head duel Rumpole is 4-2 while Markus is 3-1-1...

NFL WEEK SIX

Posted on October 17, 2010
UPDATE: Lost the KC/Houston game by half a point. Let's push the JETS game to 500 and we'll take the Colts -3 for 400. DOM won his game handily as the Eagles pounded the Falcons. Can't get the metrics to work on the Cowpokes/Vikes game although we like the Vikes...

UPCOMING EVENTS

Posted on October 14, 2010
Longtime denizens of the REGJB will remember reporter Bob Gilmartin, who had stints at WT VJ and WSVN in the 1980's. Mr. Gilmartin, who now roams the halls as a big-wig at NBC in NYC, writes to tell us that not only is our humble blog enjoyed by various members of the media in the Big Apple (and who wouldn't enjoy a short jolt of well written humor every day?), but that there is an upcoming 2 hour NBC dateline about the tragic case of Christopher Sutton...

WHERE ARE THE JURY TRIALS?

Posted on October 13, 2010
The title of the post links to the Florida Bar ("motto: "Lawyers hating Lawyers") News article about the serious decline in the number of jury trials. Fact: From 1962 to 2002, federal civil trials decreased by nearly 10 percent, and federal criminal trials experienced an even greater decrease...

TUESDAY CHAOS!!!!

Posted on October 12, 2010
Reports are flooding in of chaos at the REGJB this Tuesday morning (after a Monday holiday). Long lines. Jammed courtrooms. Harried Judges. No parking spaces. Clients and civilian witnesses stumbling around, shocked by the confusion of a court system in disarray, administered by incompetents...

SUPREME COURT SPECIALISTS

Posted on October 10, 2010
The NY Times covers the specialty practice of the Supreme Court. The title of the post links to the article. In 2000, John Roberts now Chief Justice, then a litigator, sneered at the practice of Supreme Court specialists cold calling lawyers who had certiorari granted and offering their assistance:?If I?m going to have heart bypass surgery, I wouldn?t go to the surgeon who calls me up, I?d look for the guy who?s too busy for that...

MORE REGJB TRIVIA

Posted on October 08, 2010
Good Saturday Morning! This is a long weekend and courts in Dade are closed Monday. Broward being Broweird, courts are open Monday. They never much cared for Christopher Columbus North of the Border. When some of our most self important robed readers were still in high school (1989) , a brave man named Lee Arthur Lawrence was gunned down in the parking lot of the Grocery store he and his wife owned in West Perrine...

BROWARD COUNTER ATTACK

Posted on October 06, 2010
Judge Carlos Rodriguez is not going quietly into that good night; while he stares into the abyss of losing his entire criminal division to an onslaught of state motions to disqualify, he has struck back. The Judge has struck at the soft underbelly of the Broward SAO: He has ordered the State Attorney, Mikey Satz himself, or the Chief Assistant State Attorney Chuck Morton (who happens to be a nice guy) or the the Chief of the Felony Division Jeff Marcus (a/k/a Dr...

ABHORRENT FREE SPEECH

Posted on October 05, 2010
Very sad scenario: Your son was killed in defense of his country. His body is returned to your home town for burial. At the cemetery is a group of completely wacky religious nuts from a church in Kansas. They are demonstrating and holding signs that say things like "G-d hates fags", "Semper Fi Fags", "Don't pray for the USA" , "Thank g-d for dead soldiers", and other such abhorrent nonsense...
