A long strange trip

Posted on October 21, 2007
It's been fun, but it's coming to an end. By the end of the month, I'll be closing up shop here at the Jamestown Lawyer. Thanks for all the feedback and commentary over the past however-long-it's-been, but time commitments don't let me follow through as I'd like...

64 Arrests

Posted on October 11, 2007
Presented more for quirkyness than actual social or legal commentary: 64 arrested at Ralph Wilson Stadium Monday night, twice the usual game amount according the authorities quoted in the Buffalo News.

Lawyers in Debt

Posted on October 01, 2007
An article from the Seattle paper is about college costs in general, but I find it very appropriate for sharing. As the costs of college increase annually, it becomes harder for students to ever shake the debt from their education. Salaries in public interest fields or even in private practice outside of major metrolpolitan areas don't allow timely repayment and escape from the debt.

Repeating, Reposting

Posted on September 24, 2007
Some time ago, in my landlord/tenant articles, the Jamestown Lawyer believes something was written about the timeline of an eviction proceeding. Needless to say, not everyone is an avid reader and takes my words to heart, so I would like to repeat something:Should the court issue a warrant of eviction, the tenant has three days following service of the warrant to vacate or be removed...

A MCLE note for lawyers

Posted on September 12, 2007
The court system has released some relatively minor changes to the rules regarding mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE). The first is that "substance abuse" issues have been swapped out of Law Practice Management and into Ethics/Professionalism...

Downtown

Posted on September 10, 2007
This post isn't directly law-related, but it is Jamestown-related.Following on the Local Music Showcase weekend, which reportedly was a big draw to downtown on Saturday night, today's Post-Journal contained further news on the state of downtown. A city council committee meets tonight to discuss a grant proposal and other business related to restoration of vacant and crumbling downtown buildings.

Regional: Buffalo's Poverty

Posted on August 31, 2007
Jamestown, situated between Erie and Buffalo and on main interstates reaching other large cities, doesn't have its fate tied entirely to the nearest urban hub. However, news out of Buffalo concerning the Census Bureau's determination of poverty rates doesn't bode well for the city or for WNY...

Law Lessons

Posted on August 29, 2007
Were the Jamestown Lawyer truly creative, I'd be working on a booklet of witty legal aphorisms to advise and inform. I'd like to take a page from that hypothetical book and explain, in basic terms, something that comes up over and over about our legal system:Anyone can sue anyone else for anything...

The Jamestown Lawyer wonders what is going on at the Board of Public Utilities. The Post-Journal reports on a string of resignations in high positions. Most important to the Jamestown Lawyer is correcting whatever the reported issue is with Customer Service.
