Posted on April 16, 2009
The government has agreed to postpone the rule's implementation date from next month to June 30, 2009. The rule is the subject of a lawsuit and the government has agreed to postpone while the suit is pending. Also, the Administration has yet to clearly state its position on the subject.

CAN WE GET RID OF THIS GUY ALREADY?

Posted on April 15, 2009
Not everyone deserves to be in America. Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk has managed to evade justice for two decades. He finally had his US citizenship stripped and was about to be deported this week and now his removal has been stayed again by the courts...

DRIVERS LICENSE RULES BECOME A HIDDEN TRAP FOR LEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Posted on April 14, 2009
States around the country have been changing their drivers license rules to ensure that illegally present immigrants are not getting drivers licenses. Whether that is good or bad is certainly open to debate. But one of the unintended consequences of these changes is that many legal immigrants are having trouble getting drivers licenses either because the new laws are poorly written or because department of motor vehicle officials are not very knowledgeable about the immigration laws they are supposed to be interpreting...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: SUNIL GULATI - SOCCER BOSS/ECONOMICS PROFESSOR

Posted on April 14, 2009
Indian-born Sunil Gulati is the President of the US Soccer Federation and is also an economics professor at Columbia University. And he is widely credited as the person most responsible for the growth in the popularity of soccer in the US over the last 30 years...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: JOHN MACDOUGALL - INVENTOR

Posted on April 14, 2009
Today I honor Canadian-born John MacDougall as the fourth living immigrant inductee in to this year's National Inventor Hall of Fame. MacDougall invented a process of "ion bombardment" that is a critical technology used in circuitry in today's computers...

UNIONS ON BOARD FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM (SORT OF)

Posted on April 14, 2009
The New York Times reports today that two major unions - the AFL-CIO and Win For Change - have agreed to support comprehensive immigration reform legislative efforts, something that should give a big boost to the President as he seeks to move an immigration bill through Congress...

WIDOW PENALTY STRUCK DOWN BY COURTS

Posted on April 14, 2009
Woohoo!! This is wonderful news and many of you may remember my blogging on this several times in the past. 60 Minutes did a great story on this late last year. The long and short of it is that the 6th Circuit has held that a surviving spouse still is an immediate relative under the Immigration and Nationality Act...

EDUCATE, THEN EXILE

Posted on April 11, 2009
The New York Times profiles how our nonsensical immigration policy has forced one of Google's rising stars to live in Canada. The part of the story interviewing Kim Berry of the Programmers Guild is really telling. Those who really understand why America has succeeded for generations and has produced the world's leading companies know that workers are not fungible...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: DOV FROHMAN-BENTCHKOWSKY - INVENTOR

Posted on April 10, 2009
Dutch-born Dov Frohman-Bentchkowsky is one of the father's of "flash" memory, a critical technology in computing. He's our third 2009 inductee in to the Inventors Hall of Fame and his contribution is described as follows: Dov Frohman-Bentchkowsky invented a computer chip that could be erased by exposing it to ultraviolet light, then have new data written onto it...

MORE EVIDENCE THAT WHITE HOUSE IS SERIOUS ABOUT IMMIGRATION

Posted on April 10, 2009
Thanks to reader Jim for sending this link from the Wall Street Journal. Rahm Emmanuel, the President's Chief of Staff, is now acting as one of the loudest advocates for immigration reform in the Obama Administration. Why is this important? Because Emmanuel, when he was a leader in the House of Representatives, was a vocal critic of the Democrats pursuing immigration reform and he previously was quoted as saying the Democrats should not take up immigration until a second presidential term...

MAY VISA BULLETIN IS OUT

Posted on April 09, 2009
The major news is that the EB-3 category is now unavailable. That this was going to happen was noted in last month's Visa Bulletin so hopefully those of you able to file adjustment applications in March did so. Here is the summary of the changes: Family 1st - Advancement of worldwide, China and India numbers by five weeks to 22 AUG 2002...

NYT: OBAMA TO ROLL OUT IMMIGRATION PLAN BEGINNING NEXT MONTH

Posted on April 09, 2009
Julia Preston of the New York Times reports in a front page story this morning that the White House is keeping its promise and will push hard for immigration reform this year. According to the story: While acknowledging that the recession makes the political battle more difficult, President Obama plans to begin addressing the country?s immigration system this year, including looking for a path for illegal immigrants to become legal, a senior administration official said on Wednesday...

H-1B CAP NOT HIT DURING INITIAL FILING PERIOD

Posted on April 08, 2009
Sources are telling me that the H-1B cap was not hit during the initial five day filing period. This is the first time in several years the cap has not been hit immediately after it opened. I'll pass on more details as I learn them.

ANTI-IMMIGRANT DEFEATED IN ILLINOIS US HOUSE BY-ELECTION

Posted on April 08, 2009
Yesterday, an election was held to fill the seat in the US House of Representatives of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel. Democratic Mike Quiqley easily defeated Republican Rosanna Pulido. What I found amazing is that the GOP actually nominated Ms...

IMMIGANT OF THE DAY: ALFRED CHO - INVENTOR

Posted on April 07, 2009
If you used a cell phone today or listened to a CD, you probably have Alfred Cho to thank. The Chinese-born Cho was recently inducted in to the Inventors Hall of Fame which described his work as follows: Alfred Cho is considered ?the father of molecular beam epitaxy,? a process in which materials are layered atop one another ? atom-by-atom within a vacuum -- with great precision to form devices like transistors and light-emitting diodes, or lasers...

PHOENIX MAYOR: ARPAIO IS TO ARIZONA WHAT SHERIFF BULL CONNOR WAS TO ALABAMA

Posted on April 06, 2009
That's an apt comparison. And for those not familiar with this guy, trust me, this is no compliment. By the way, for those Arpaio fans who will probably post something obnoxious in the comments, Connor had people who made identical arguments about African-Americans violated segregation laws...

CAT FIGHT!

Posted on April 06, 2009
Well, it's the DHS equivalent. This story is SPECTACULAR! Jim Slaughter, an officer with DHS' Customs and Border Protection (he works at the San Luis, Arizona border station), has sued DHS' Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a raid on his home. Here's the story from KSWT, the CBS television affiliate in Yuma, Arizona: A Customs and Border Protection officer says the Department of Homeland Security violated his constitutional rights...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: CHIEN-MING WANG - BASEBALL PLAYER

Posted on April 04, 2009
In honor of the New York Yankees move in to the new Yankees Stadium, today I honor Taiwanese-born Yankees' starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang. Since becoming a Yankee, Wang has become a national hero in Taiwan and all of his games are televised in his native land...

JOB SHOP FINED $509,607 IN BACK WAGES TO H-1B WORKERS

Posted on April 04, 2009
This is actually encouraging news if you support the H-1B program. Actually, headlines like this are the protectionists' worst nightmare. The antis argue that H-1B workers are paid less than their American counterparts. But they really aren't interested in the foreign workers being paid more...

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Posted on April 04, 2009
It may leave your head scratching, but many of the Programmers Guild whiners will try to convince you that they're actually the free traders. It reminds me of the brainwashing in Orwell's 1984 - "war is peace; freedom is slavery; ignorance is strength"...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: MARTIN "JOHN" ATALLA - INVENTOR

Posted on April 04, 2009
Congrats to 2009 Inventors Hall of Fame inductee John Atalla, a native of Egypt. According to the Hall of Fame: John Atalla is one of the inventors of the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET), the most widely employed type of integrated circuit...

7 OF 16 INDUCTEES TO INVENTORS HALL OF FAME ARE IMMIGRANTS

Posted on April 04, 2009
Every time you start to buy in to the protectionist nonsense espoused by the anti-H-1B crowd, remember these kinds of statistics. 25% of all of the jobs in Silicon Valley are at companies started by immigrants. 47% of scientists and engineers in the US with Ph...

MITT ROMNEY CHANGES TUNE ON IMMIGRATION

Posted on April 03, 2009
Apparently, Mitt Romney finally read the memo that said you will NEVER become President if Hispanic Americans hate you. I warned him about this a year and a half ago. Romney told the Hill newspaper this about immigration: Romney believes that one way to attract more minorities to the GOP is to pass immigration reform before the next election, saying the issue becomes demagogued by both parties on the campaign trail...

MCCAIN TO PACK UP TOYS, GO HOME

Posted on April 03, 2009
John McCain, upset that Hispanics didn't vote for him in large numbers, is telling immigration reform advocates not to expect him to take a lead in pushing for passage of a bill. Stay classy, Senator McCain. From the National Journal: John McCain sounds angry and frustrated that, despite the risks he took in pushing immigration reform, Hispanic voters flocked to Democrat Barack Obama in last year's presidential contest...

NBC: GUNMAN DEAD, LIKELY ACTED ALONE

Posted on April 03, 2009
NBC's Pete Sessions says police now believe there was just a single gunman in the Binghampton shooting and has killed himself. Still no information on who he was.

BREAKING NEWS - GUNMAN GOES ON SHOOTING SPREE AT IMMIGRATION SERVICES OFFICE IN NEW YORK

Posted on April 03, 2009
Not a lot of information yet about this horrible news. I don't know much about the American Civic Association in Binghampton, but they appear to be a charitable organization that provides assistance to immigrants and refugees. It appears that at least a dozen people were killed and it appears that dozens are being held hostage...

FIGHT NOTARIO FRAUD

Posted on April 03, 2009
The American Bar Association has partnered with mega-firm Bryan Cave to educate the public on the criminal activities of "notarios" preying on immigrants around the US. Notarios use the name because in much of Latin America, a Notario is a high level professional carrying out the same kinds of duties that a lawyer in the US does...
